The theory that's being suggested is that Toynami's Alpha's were never 1/55 scale in the first place, that they were actually 1/48 scale and based on the original 1/48 scale Imai Mospeada Legioss model kits. Supposedly Toynami labeled their Alpha's as 1/55 scale so that buyers of their 1/55 scale Macross Veritechs would be encouraged to add the Alpha's to their collections. Feh... not surprising at all coming from Toynami.

Ironically, Toynami might have sold me if they'd said 1/48 to begin with (it's a standard model airplane scale besides also being the scale of Yamato's beautiful VF-1 series). But 1/55 reminds me simply of the old chunky monkeys - which had their time but it's over now.

But that thing doesn't even come close to 1/48 at best it borders between 1/60 - 1/72 I really can't see how aoshima is going to improve these toynami ones. If they had really intended to improve these they could've just improved their molds for the 1/48 kits they've released. Well at least this thread is good for my wallet. I'll probably get one of the CM Alpha Beta combo if funds permit

I'm really late with this news, but I finally had time to listen to the last Space Station Liberty podcast where they interviewed a rep from Funimation (distributor of Shadow Chronicles) and Tommy Yune of Harmony Gold. And Tommy confirmed what Chen was suggesting: that the Aoshima Legios is a joint development project with Toynami to re-engineer the load-bearing joints on their Alpha fighters. Plus some of the details will be tweaked because of different market standards between North America and Japan. The exterior appearance however will look like the Toynami mold.

Sounds good. Why not just admit that they botched up several aspects of their Alphas in the first place, and they need help fixing them.
