Right now I can't imagine something to power that heavy stuff...,
besides an old vw beetle engine...

I wonder what the mileage would be for that thing...
Hey, I just noticed that the DMZ -02 is significantly larger than the DMZ-02. No wonder there's a price difference.

Just got the Takara 1/18 DMZ-01 from HLJ. Finally get to see what this hype is all about, and to keep it short, I am very impressed! Similar to everybody's feedback, this is pretty big (as tall as a 1/55 Chunky Monkey VF-1, but even chunkier), well built figure that is very playable & light, while has a bit of painted model-kit feel. Very good finish on the scope lens, overall paint, and details. The weathering a bit rough, but still look good as long as you are not too anal. It can be easily touched up to make it even better. Love the poseability to boot, with the yawing leaning action going on, while still able to balance. And that is the best arm punch gimmick I've ever seen. Very strong spring action there and so fun to play. Now thats a real Scopedog!
Maybe mine is a re-issue, as the loose visor and head dome seem fine on mine. Visor not tight by any means, but will stay up and open, while the head doesn't come off at all. The fingers are not ideal, but seems to hold up ok. Would be great if they added grooves on the peg on the fingers, rather than just a straight peg. Lazy design. Contrary to that, the shoulder joints are very well designed. Since I got a slightly looser right shoulder ball joint, I opened it up and realized it has a double diecast discs clamping on a ball & socket joint (socket made by some harder polycap material) and held by 2 screws. Very secure and not prone to wear. Impressive. With the super glue trick, now my gun arm shoulder is very secure. The only thing left is to open up the feet and find some good weights to fit in, so that it can balance even better when doing more extreme sliding action. Getting Chirico sit in there nicely while allowing the hatch to shut flush does take some effort.
Takara definitely has a winner toyline here, and pays a lot of homage to the classic Duel Model series, while making it so much better. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be super popular among casual or non-Votoms fans. With little diecast and being very light, its still worth every penny I paid for. Didn't expect this to be this good.

The Max Factory line with the Standing Tortoise and Bloodsucker pictured above exhibit tremendous quality. Max Factory's trademark excellent paint and tight but non brittle joints are all there BUT the cockpits do not open. This is quite a big deal for me. It takes a lot of the charm away from the Armoured Trooper as the pilot / cockpit interior is one of the most identifying features of the mech. I just picked up a Max Factory Red Shoulder Dog at the fabled Frank & Sons. $40 (no tax), not bad. It's a really nice figure (extremely posable), but the fact that the cockpit doesn't open and the lack of zinc are the drawbacks. The wife and I visited Long Beach yesterday for some whale watching; we brought the pet dog with us.

I scored a Yamato 1/12 Red Shoulder Scopedog (ver.2). I posed him real Horrorshow-like for my Droogs. The last pic is out of focus due to P.F. Chang's serving of too many Molokos with knives in it. They do sharpen me up for the ol' ultra-violence, O my brothers!

The wife and I visited Long Beach yesterday for some whale watching; we brought the pet dog with us. The Max Factory 1/35 scale Red Shoulder Custom Scopedog didn't sell too well in Taiwan, so now local toyshops have them on clearance for NT$790 (US$24.00). The Strikedog and Brutishdog from the same series were on sale for even less - NT$590 (US$ 18.00) each. I'd say the quality of Max Factory's 1/35 Votoms series is similar to Bandai's MSIA. The shoulder armor tend to pop off when you move the arms and so do other accessories. On the other hand, the paint detail and weathering are great. Although the head can't rotate, the legs, knees, and ankles have some mobility. I much prefer Takara's 1/48 scale Scopedogs. They're tiny, but at least you can open the cockpit. Plus there's AT-FLY and other transport vehicles for this series.

Takara DMZ 1/18 Red Shoulder Custom accesories set. Yup! Looks great. Really wish there will be more add-on accessories sets like this, as there are tons of variations appeared in the TV and OVAs, with different backpacks, minor parts change...etc. Having more of these might actually boost the DMZ-01 base figure sales, as some collectors might actually want the variations displayed at the same time. Just like many Macross fans at least get a couple of the 1/48 VF-1s, just to wear the different accessory packs. This could even help keeping the dying Microman line to stay alive, with more Votoms characters pair up with these accessories. Hope Takara will go this direction, making more dollars while make fans happy.
