I know this topic has come up before, but i ran across this bit of info on an anime board awihle back (see below). it brought out some interesting reasons why we'll probably never see GGG DVDs released in the USA. I guess we'll be stuck with the lousy import subtitles forever! aaarrrgh! i didnt know that sunrise works only with bandai now. is this true?

Sunrise worked with Takara to make the Brave series. Takara made the toys, Sunrise made the show.
The problem: Takara ONLY deals with Hasbro on toys, no one else, for the last thirty years. Hasbro gave them G.I. Joe, Takara made it translucent and sold it at Henshin Cyborg. Henshin Cyborg begat a smaller, 3-inch version called Microman, which I'm sure inspired, at least a little, the idea for the 80's version of G.I. Joe. Microman also begat Microchange, and Takara also made Diaclone, the two lines becoming the majority of the original Transformers. And so on, and so forth, it's been like that ever since, to the point where they now work together on Transformers.
Sunrise, while once independent, is now under control of Bandai, who own a majority of their stock, I believe. They can produce plenty of shows, but they'll never be able to work with Takara again.
Both Takara and Sunrise own part of the Brave rights. Takara can't make a show without Sunrise, and Sunrise can't go to Bandai to make toys. As a result, both companies have tried other avenues. Sunrise was able to make an OAV for GaoGaiGar, but that's all they can do, and all they'll probably be able to do. Takara could only make a new Brave series using a video game. No toys, no show, just a game. So more Brave seems unlikely.
As for getting it over here, therein lies the problem. With Sunrise under Bandai's thumb, and Takara under Hasbro's, it means that we're basically left with Bandai of America and Hasbro fighting it out over the distribution rights. From what I understand, both companies want it lock, stock, and barrel. It doesn't help that Bandai America has Betterman, which not only has the same director as GaoGaiGar, it even takes place in the same universe (it's been proven). So until something happens to change the current situation, I doubt it'll ever some over here. One can only hope that someday, Sunrise will make an 'international edition' R1 set of GaoGaiGar (complete with the Final OAV), complete with subs and Ocean dub (let's face it, they're the studio most well equipped to handle such overblown character personalities), to distribute in Japan, and then to importers. Sunrise makes a profit, GaoGaiGar fans get their DVDs with DECENT subs, everybody wins. But I'm doubting that'll ever happen.
