I had just finshede this and I thought it may be interesting:
The definition of Gundam, an essay.
Gundam, this word has haunted the likes of both Char Aznable and Zechs Merquise.
It has saved organizations like the earth federation and the Sanc kingdom.
This name also has stormed the American psyche and has made a considerable impact in the Japanese culture.
However, what does the word Gundam mean?
According to some sources, the name Gundam is a clever anagram for General UNiversal Data Articulation Machine or G.U.N.D.A.M for short.
However, this is of course unofficial and I heard other anagrams used for it as well.
However, you may ask, what makes a Gundam a Gundam?
This is an interesting question because there is no straight answer.
In fact, at some Gundam message boards that question is quite taboo. However, I will try my best to answer it.
Now in the classic Gundam [sometimes referred to as Gundam 0079, MSG, classic MSG, 0079] the name GUNDAM was given to a mobile suit called the RX-78, a prototype mobile suit developed by the earth federation to fight in the one year war against the principality of Zeon. Now this Gundam was the basis for all future E.F.F mobile suits after it came out.
As we move on and enter the realm of Gundam Zeta, we see a change; the name Gundam enters a new stage. Gundarium, a brand new metal named after the RX-78 Gundam and many mobile suits use it and by the time of Victory Gundam, it is the standard metal of all suits called Gundams.
As we break from the universal century, timeline we go into the realm of G Gundam the Gundam universes first alternate timeline, in this nothing is changed and it keeps most of the standards of Gundam despite its parallel storyline.
Now the series that starts the “Gundam controversy” is the show Gundam Wing. This did far more damage to the Gundam continuality then G Gundam because of its completely backwards mobile suit development. Instead of going forwards in mobile suit development, it went backwards. Now the story goes that a suit called the Tallgeese
Was the first mobile suit ever made, this suit proved dangerous due to its high thrust powers, Its G forces killed many of its test pilots and so the suit had to be put into storage.
In between the time of the Tallgeese and the start of Gundam wing, the main organization that makes mobile suits called OZ [order of the zodiac] develops the Leos, a poor excuse for a mobile suit. Once again, the name Gundam shows up but this time it is different.
Apparently, a metal called Gundanium is responsible for the name Gundam in wing… but later on two mobile suits called the Mercurius and the Vayeate are made of Gundanium… and this question is the result:
“So if the Gundams are named after Gundanium, then why not the Mercurius and the Vayeate are not called Gundams?”
This is quite a development.
Because people think that, the most powerful suit is a Gundam, another argument takes place and we hear this question:
“If the most powerful suits are Gundams then why suits like the Sazabi and the Hyaku Shiki are not Gundams?”
In addition, because of metals like Gundarium this question pops up:
“If the Sazabi and the Hyaku Shiki are made out of Gundarium why they are not called Gundams?”
This is confusing, but we can try to come up with a simple answer: because the bad people make crappy suits and the good people make the Gundams.
However, this is illogical because the Titians and OZ both developed Gundams, and both of these organizations are very nasty. Plus several of the bad guy suits out class outclass the Gundam in firepower [the Gelgoog could have been more then a match for the Gundam, its firepower is on par with the Gundams]
Therefore, we are back at square one... or so it seems.
We can look at other AU Gundam shows and then come up with an idea on what is up.
In Gundam X Gundams were mobile suits developed by the earth federation [note this is not the earth federation from the universal century] during the seventh space war. The capabilities of each Gundam was different from the other, and they had the “Flash system” that allowed a Newtype to control “Bit mobile suits”
In Turn A, another plot turns out even more questions but I will not get into Turn A because I do not want to give any spoilers on it.
Gundam SeeD goes back to Gundams roots and it shows no originality compared to other alternate universes.
For ages to come the question of “what exactly is a Gundam?” may never be answered but here is how the definition of Gundam might look like in Webster’s dictionary:
One: An anime created by Yoshiyuki Tomino in 1979, two: the main robotic suit featured in the show Mobile suit Gundam.
As we move on and possibly see more Gundam shows made it is clear that the name Gundam will live on forever…
