WOW! Looks like a great playset... gamers would love that thing for a ship/space scenario (Gundam or not); any chance it will make our shores? Ward

From what I understand, Americans aren't anywhere near as into model building as the Japanese. At least, I think I've heard that. It makes sense. Cuz even most of the model builders in America do planes, cars, and rockets; not super robots. It's a culteral difference. We tend to idolize cars and war while the Japanese are more sci-fi oriented. Someone's gonna make me eat my words on this one. I can feel it.
Anyway, what I want to assess about this model is whether or not it really functions like a toy. Once you assemble it, is it any different than something you might buy pre-assembled? And does it have any features other than the two compartments shown? Maybe that's where toy and model differ...features. Anyway, just curious. Looks like one heck of a toy, and putting it together would be fun, but I'm looking to satisfy the toy lover in me; not the model builder.

There is a huge difference between a DX MSIA figure and a Perfect Grade model, even if it takes an expert to tell them apart on the shelf. Models may do cool stuff, but they're fussy, delicate, and no fun to mess with. I imagine the ship would be the same. JWM

That's right, I heard toys have to pass 'drop tests' among other standards for child safety which makes them have thicker plastic walls, softer PVC guns. etc... unlike models kits. Though as a kid I had many models that did toy service (but didn't stand up to long term play). This thing looks so toy like... no paint or glue, and uses screws to fasten heavy parts... Pehaps just wishful thinking, but I hope it's a 'toy kit', like the Zoids models which make good toys. I don't have any Gundam models (just the toys), what do you think JWM? Will this be a 'toy-kit'? Is level 3 easy to build?

A level 3 kit would be easy, and fun to build. Bandai's tech writers have true genius when it comes to model instructions. They reduce the most complex assemblies into simple, easy to follow steps, even if you don't read Japanese.(In comparison, the instructions with the SOC line are terrible.) If you haven't built a Gundam model yet, you're in for a treat. They're fun. I bought one to kill time on a rainy day. Now I got a bunch of 'em (familiar story?) However, from my experience with Bandai models I wouldn't bet on a toy grade end product. JWM

hey JWM, give us a low down when you do :-) Dont think Im gonna go it myself.. Still, for that size a model, it must be close to a toy grade...I mean, you'd think the plastic walls may be a little thicker than say a 1/60 Gundam... but I wouldnt rush to drop it inorder to test the theory! hehe

I'll wait for your review, as well. I'd really like to know the durability of the plastic, more than anything.

I didn't mean to give the wrong impression. Of course I want it, but this is one I'm going to have to pass on. Right now I'm broke, and both space, and the good will of my wife have stretched rather thin with the Dancouga, and the EVA's all coming at once. If I make another hog-wild Gundam purchase it'll be the 1/24 hyper hybrid rx78.

Just saw a pic of White Base in Toyfare magazine. It is looking more toy-like in appearance (thick parts, molded color). It sure looks beefy & durable (meaning I can 'fly' it around the house)...if the opportunity knocks, I'm going for it. Hey JWM, is 1/400 scale the same scale as the basic 4" Gundam figure/toys?

The 5" Gundams that you see at Target are about 1/144 scale. 1/400 would be a keychain sized figure- maybe 2" give or take. That would be cool as all get out if the figures are well detailed and articulated. JWM

Thanks for the scale info on this JWM. I was looking at the figs included, thinking White Base was 4+ feet long. Still very impressive, and yes, it would be a big bonus if the 1/400 scale figs were articulated.

Hi, I'm new here and I'm naturally excited to be here! And I happened to chanced upon this thread. The plastic is of the WB is "solid". Better IMO than the plastic from zoids or MGs and the toy is "pre-coloured". It does not require any cement or glue for assembley and "screws" are not really compulsory. Below is the link for the 1/400 figures and the only drawback about them is the lack of articulation! But other than that, they're fairly detailed! www30.tok2.com/home/msz006zg/tok2-gc-gcwmc.htm

Yes, welcome Gundamfan777. Thanks for posting info about this cool item. Have you built yours already? Sounds very cool (looks super cool in the pics). If/when you build yours, please do a review of it for us, if you have time; (just your comments on the features, construction, looks..anything at all) Thanks, Ward

I'll add my welcome to the list, 777. We need more Gundamaniacs. And I, too would love to hear about the giant Whitebase model. What else have you bought or built lately that stands out? JWM

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! The thing is I've already built the WB! The bad news is I don't have a web-cam to post pictures but I can try my best to descibe WB to u. The toy's as long as "Fortress Maximas" from Transformers "lying" down! I do hope I'm allowed to mentioned TFs here, as this being a Gundam board lol! The reason why I use Fort Max as a comparison is because most folks in general know how large he is! WB in general is kind of "hallow" as the idea of it is to store numerous 1/400 Gundams. How many I do not know as I feel that the "minis" are best displayed outside the WB. Despite the "hallowness", the plastic is good but I do not know if its as good a PG kit as I do not own one. WB comes with its exclusive 1/400 Gundam, Guncannon and Guntank! And oh, it comes with a "docking" bay where you can dock the trio togather - in either of the front ramps of the WB. Storage areas of the WB are naturally the 2 ramps, the areas in directly in front and behind the control tower and the 2 afterburners...yup, you guys heard it right! The afterburners! Largest storage area would be the the area directly behind the control tower. WB has its pair of the "mega particle beam cannons" and one has to remove the "yellow" circles (beside the control tower) - sorry folks, WB doesn't have the "fold" the guns up feature! WB comes in show accurate colours and I did not paint it as my painting skills are crap! A cool additon to WB is a black base where one can "rest" the WB one! Oh yeah, in case I forget WB is sort of "heavy" to stimulate space flights! Its meant to be more of a display piece rather than a toy! If I'm not mistaken Bandai has plans to release a 1/400 Musai too! No kidding! As for other stuff I've built...being a rather bad painter of kits, I still to MG kits where many of the kits look "good" unpainted.
