I'm new to Gundam Modelling, and there are a couple of SD Gundam kits on ebay Australia I am interested in purchasing. These kits are from 1988. I was wondering what are peoples opinions on this, keep them as collectables in their boxes or build them?

Build them... In my experience the SD kits are the most fun to build and the least fun to keep in their boxes. Not sure why that is... The quality of SD kits never really varied over time and even the older ones were pretty cool (and look good when assembled and standing next to their modern counterparts).

cool. the kits on ebay here right now are 1988 Vintage SD Gundam Model Kit - BAUND DOC 1988 Vintage SD Gundam Model Kit - Re-GZ 1988 Vintage SD Gundam Model Kit - ZIONG AF 528 BANDAI Z GUNDAM 'RICK DIAS' 1:100. As far as it goes at the moment for gundam kits on ebay in australia, The guy from www.neodan.com is selling stuff or there is just vintage stuff on there, although I don't know how old the Rick Dias kit is, Series 08 if that helps. Any of these kits worth getting or should I be starting off with something different. I don't think I'll be doing any weathering on the SD kits, due to their cartoonish nature I'll want to keep them looking simplistic and cutesy (just like in the anime ) Edit: The guy selling the Rick Dias has some Generation 0 (gundam not mentioned anywhere but still Bandai). They look like they are in the style of Gundam as well as some very classic anime mecha looking kits. These worth looking into?

Just took a look ...The art-work on the Rick Dias box places it somewhere in the early to mid 90's but I'm not 100% sure. It might actually be older (I'm not terribly familiar with the Zeta series products).
I'm going to guess that "Generation Zero" refers to the line-up featuring bots from the Super-Robot-War game series - yes, Gundams show up in those games from time-to-time. Naturally, it's yet another avenue for Bandai to market kits in).

I'm guessing you saw the Rick Dias on ebay? The ones on Neodan are noticiably newer (all 4 of them). Ideally I'll pick up all of the Gundam models there, even just for their vintage if I dont put them together. I've just spend about AU$90 on J-Pop CDs so I might have to hold back. If I get the Rick Dias I won't put him together straight away. I'll want to learn how to get really good at weathering and painting before I do an old kit. To me it might feel like desecrating an ancient relic.

I'd pick the simplest-looking one - build it, paint it, weather it... if it looks good, then you're on your way! (Let the insanity begin!). ;D

sorry, but I can't really imagine a realistically detailed SD Gundam. I'll probably need to get an airbrush and stuff to do this properly..... dang
