Hello!!
Think of it as plasticine for grown-ups. You can do all sorts of stuff with it... if you're creative enough, that is.
Tamiya makes a putty that comes in a squeeze tube (like tooth paste). It's grey, and soft, but not runny like tooth paste... I've used it for filling in seams and what not on Gundam kits (particularly 1/144 scale guys since they tend to have seams all over). It dries overnight (sort of - best bet is to give a few days) into a rock-hard substance. You can sand it afterwards with a metal file. Since it's gray, you can prime your model either white or black before painting...
Citadel Miniatures has something entirely different - they call it "Green Stuff." It comes in little baggies in strips of blue and yellow and won't dry out until you combine them... you have to use your fingers to roll the two colours together until it turns green. It's sticky and tougher than Tamiya's product. But since it's so solid, you can sculpt it around metal pieces like pewter miniatures, etc with a knife. It takes a few days to dry (longer than the Tamiyma stuff). Once dry, it's somewhat easier to sculpt than the Tamiya stuff... I find you can cut into it easier.
