Good thing you took pix of your Guntank before the accident. I have a young kid, too. I worry that he'll someday start digging into my boxes of Gundams when I'm not around. Cool custom Gundams.

and here is comparison shots of two One Year War version - one finished in clean and another in MAX style shading. two OYWlooking at them side by side this does look like good comparison between MAX style shading and clean non shading finish... the clean one's I modified and painted for a mate of mine who wants his MS clean and shiny like just rolled off the production line. For me I like mine heavy in shadow as it gives the model depth and more 3D - not too mention it looks like it's been out on field for some time when I add the weathering...

dude i love max style of painting, it is the reason why i stop making kits a decade ago or so hehe. i just could not get the finish of gundams i see in hobby magazines, it turned into an obsession, then frustration because i could not copy those subtle dark edges . a few years after i learned it was called max watanabe's style of painting, or simply put, it is a style of pre shading similar to the methods use in armor modelling called panel shading. i develop a simple trick back then to try to copy max style of painting hehe. i used grounded up pastel chalks, and applied it with a pointed brush at the edges and on the panel lines . it looks max style of painting when looking at the model at a distance hehe. max style of painting was a sort of holy grail for me in my gunpla days. but when i learned how he does it, dude! it takes a lot of work hehe. it takes a lot of planning, masking, time and expertise. not to mention you should have super ultra steady hands so that the shading is even and unified. it takes a lot of work hehe. if i were to built again, i'll just be contented with pastel chalks for my shading . and even the "dalong style" of painting looks good to me nowadays hehe. this painting only involves panel lining anyways, great job bro! the shading is truly magnificent.
