I’ve always wanted this except I didn’t want to spend in upwards of $350CDN for it so I stalled and waited. Finally I found one on ebay for $150CDN which also allowed for me to pick it up from the seller so naturally I jumped at it.
The box itself is huge and upon opening it I was grossly overwhelmed by the sheer number of part in the stems for assembly after all its been 4 years since I built my last model with mediocre success. However, the assembly went smoothly taking about 3 hours overall turns out that it wasn’t as complicated as I initially thought. It felt more like assembling a Gundam DX toy rather than building a model as you had to use small metal screws to put quite a few of its parts together. Everything is molded to the right color so no painting is mandatory. although panel lining could complement it quite nicely.
The results?
It is huge and imposing among its features includes a docking bay for the 3 1/400 gundam figures included. Two side panels with beam cannons and various opening doors one in the back and three in front as well as 2 on each side. Obviously this was designed to double as storage for bandai’s 1/400 series. The ship’s bridge can be pulled up to reveal a hollow space for more 1/400 storage space. A “retractable” cannon is found at the centre of the ship.
The detail is impressive and very true to the anime. The plastic material used is identical to the gundam dx’s series not the cheap MSIA or FIX. so it is quite satisfying. Bandai spared no expense in the molding/sculpting of this baby from the inner intake detail to its docking bay it was nicely done.
This piece didn’t disappoint, and delivered a very “playable” and nicely detailed Dx toy rendition of the original white Base. And yes you heard right it is more of a toy than an actual model once it is built and is likely as sturdy.
If you ever liked the White Base, this baby is the one and only game in town with a very reasonable price of admission compared to its vintage counterpart. Yes, it doesn’t have die-cast but really who cares its BIG, well SCULPTED, pretty accurate to the anime. What else is there?
