The animated Gundam itself is much less detailed and sort of curves over many of the actual mechanics of the Mobile Suit. This aspect makes replicating that "curvy" animated look into Gunpla a toss up. You either make the figure able to recreate its animated look while sacrificing its poseability or you detail it up and give it articulation that will allow it to achieve a variety of poses but it would lose that original animation feel. The other possibility is the fact that it could just be another version. The RX-78-2 is the most frequently made (and remade) mobile suit from Gundam. Every line of toy that Bandai has produced (or any other manufacturer) has the Gundam at least once in its lineup. This also means there will be many different versions of it. The RX-78-2 is also one of the most frequently revamped designs. Most notably, Hajime Katoki has remade the Gundam to look more like the machines that appear in later series so that the design's flow together easily as the timeline progresses. A simple Google Image search for "RX-78-2" illustrates just how many different versions of the Gundam there are. images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=RX-78-2&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2

The RX-78-2 IS the TV version that Amuro Rey "stole" and used in the One-Year war. I don't remember that they used that designation in the show, however later on with the variations of the RX-78, they started using the -2 , as the man said it is the one that is been redesigned and remade many times over. It is also what all proceeding Gundams were based off. Ichicban, the first one...They may have drawn it differently from the toy, which IMO is a great representation of the original Gundam. You really want to see a sweet RX-78-2, check out the KA version that is a redesign or rather more detailed or HDTV version of the TV show.
