Those things are part of the "Musha" gundam series where gundams from the Z & ZZ series come with snap on samurai styled armor. They stand about 7.5 scaled at 1/100 and were released in the 80's. It came in the Z, ZZ and Mk II Gundam price is about right. I've always wanted to start and complete the trio but the price made it unappealing [for what it is]. Instead I opted for the Academy bootleg Mk II "super-sized" at 15" tall with comparable quality to its bandai counterpart.

Thank you for the info. Only three of 'em? That doesn't sound like a hard collection to finish. But you are right, for what they are seems a little expensive...

it's actually five. 3 japanese samurai gundams called "musha gundams", a knight gundam rx178 Mk3, and a special gundam called "Command Gundam. The last 2 are quite a catch IMHO.

For those who have these toys, can you comment on the sculpt? How do they compare or contrast to more modern Gundam figures (MSIA, HCM Pro, GFF, DX, HGUC, MG, PG, etc)? Are they more old-fashioned, possibly reminiscent of the original HCM's?

These are based of the original DX toys and like it has already been said, it comes with armor and weaponry to make them appear like samurais. It is Gundam re-using older molds with new accessories.

That's about the going price currently for the Zeta. The Heavy Arms Command Gundam and the red ZZ Gundam sell for about a $100 more, but are maybe a little more rare. The MK II is fairly common, but I almost never see the Knight, but I'm not sure it's very much in demand.
As far as durability goes, they are very similar to the old HCMs. Thick, heavy plastic. Substantially bigger than old HCMs and have a lot accessory pieces. The molds don't have tons of detail, but still nice. Fairly posable, although not like what we have with figures today. Personally I really like them other than their stickers.

I could be wrong about this, but I thought that Academy obtained a licensing agreement to build the jumbo RX-178 Mk II. I have the basic Bandai DX RX-178 and ZZ. I always wanted the Command, Musha Zeta, and Knight Gundams but got distracted by all of the newer figures that keep coming out.

This is an old thread, but I thought I'd post anyway. Academy's giant MK-II is a knockoff. They didn't have the rights from Bandai. It wasn't until years later that they got the license to make Gundam kits for a while. They turned from a knockoff company to a legit company in the late 1990's. Quality is incredible for a knockoff, though.
I just bought a second Academy Musha Mk-II. I love this toy so much that I decided I must have two. :-)
