It's not like this series ended twenty years ago.
There's brand new Macross toys still being made by Bandai and Yamato. Several new Mospeada Ride Armors from CM, Megahouse, and Toynami. A new Macross tv series in April and fan bases that are just as popular as Gundam or Transformers.
Heck. Even Robotech got the sh*tastic Shadow Chronicles.
If anything these franchises are alive and well in the hearts of fans across the world.
What gives?

hmm to be honest I think the majority of the macross fandom started with the toys. at least I speak for myself and my friends in Socal from MW. We are all ardent fans of the 1/55 takatoku and Bandai.
A lot of people do like macross plus and the newer stuff, but I believe it stems from the original series and DYRL.

I agree with Solscud that the fandom always followed the vintage Takatoku/Banda/Joons valks, waaaaaaay before the Yamato's or Toynamis.
I became a member of MW when I was looking for information on the 1/72 Mac Plus Valks by Yamato. I've since learned of the "Macross Drought" when every Macross fan would even shell out $200 for a lowly Joons, or a beat-up Jetfire. Times were hard then... Macross toys were scarce and painfully expensive.
So yes, I think Macross is right up with the vintage class, regardless of the Yamato's, and Toynami's. ^_^

We'd have to ask Ed. I just remember there was a time on RJ when there was NO Macross board in the forum at all. If you wanted to talk Bandai/Takatoku valks you had to hunt down the thread in the Other Vintage board. And if you wanted to talk Yamato/Toynami threads, you had to hunt down the appropriate thread in the General board (and don't forget, this was back when Yamato was just starting to put out the 1/60 ones so it's not like there was a lot of news to go around). My guess is, at the time when I suggested a Macross board, Ed felt there was simply more vintage material to discuss than the new stuff.

yeah you guys have it good. I remember when I heavily started collecting macross it was during the drought. My friends and I would heavily customize scrap valks like jetfire (since it had the armor) into whatever we wanted. We would get resin scuplts or recasts of heads to MAKE the valk we wanted. Those were the good old days. now its just repaint after repaint.
There hasnt been any real innovation. some like a friend is making a 2 seater 1/48 and another is making a 1/48 Thunderhammer. But these guys have been the leading pioneers taking off after my other friends and I.

I rememeber those days.
When a custom was a CUSTOM, and creativity was flowing like fricken Yoshinol! I remember Ostriches borne out of Jetfires, and VF-1S Strikes from Joons, and other boots!
Now it's just a repaint after another as you said. Sigh.... good 'ol days. Where have they gone?

Five out of the twenty threads on the first page are vintage related.
I think it's safe to say the newer toys and models are a priority.
Whereas vintage chunky monkeys are around for nostalgic purposes.

I know that the 1/55 Takatoku's have been called "Chunky Monkey" for a long while. And I sure remember those days when there were nothing but super pricey vintage Takatoku's andd Bandai's. Still remember the hurt from my wallet.
