Despite not being a fan of Macross, I still feel compelled to have one those cool looking Gerwalking Valkyries in my collection. Thing is, I don't know sh*t about them, 1/55, 1/60, 1/48, 1/100 are all foreign terms to me. What i'm looking for is something that can transform into three things, is durable, and can be bought for a decent price.
The main thing that worries me is the durability, i've heard many horror stories about these toys coming right apart after very light handling. I'm not looking for a chogokin-brick type of durability, but nothing flimsier than let's say, Masterpiece Starscream.
Any and all input is appreciated and who knows, maybe one toy can lead to a new fan of everything Macross.

The toynami 1/100 scale might be good place to start. They're only $20 each and transform into all 3 modes. I have 3 and haven't broken one yet. (The stands they come with are crap though). I've recently overheard that Bandai was re-issuing the 1/55 scale Valks again. These are made from the same molds as the original 80's Takatoku Valks, which while not the most accurate, are still the most durable. They'll probably be around $80-$100, which is still less than most of the Yamato Valks.

I think you may still be able to get Bandai 1/55 for a half way decent price. I would'nt spend a whole lot on a 1/55 either. If you can wait then I say hold off and get the new 1/60 perfect change Valks by yamato. I dont think the'll be as costly as a 1/48 and will have most of the main features of a 1/48 size Valk. if anything go to www.macrossworld.com and read the reviews on the main page. 1/48 max yamato www.collectiondx.com/node/20091/60 yamato - original version NOT perfect transformation www.collectiondx.com/node/6581/60 and 1/48 Comparison shots

Once you get a look around at all the different offerings, it mostly comes down to a matter of taste. If there's anything to the rumour mentioned above that Bandai is reissuing the 1/55 scale toy, then that's the ultimate definitive totally indestructible toy version (they just don't make'em like they used to). But of course, being a major throw-back to the early 80's, the 1/55 is not anime-accurate and is well... kind of ugly.
All the later stuff (save for the small 1/100 by Toynami) isn't really casual-buyer-friendly... they've all been targetting a hi-end buyer. I suppose the 1/60 scale Yamato versions have levelled off in price (they've been out for a while and aren't skyrocketting on the secondary market). On the one hand, they are anime-accurate proportions (everything's very realistic), but on the other, they're not perfect-transform like a transforming toy is (the legs must be physically seperated from the toy and then reattached elsewhere when you "transform" it).
But if money is no object, don't hesitate to check out the 1/48 scale by Yamato. They're all pretty nice - even the plain vanilla ones without the add-on bits. It'll transform like a toy but since you're paying at least a hundred bucks for one, I wouldn't carelessly treat it like a toy either - I suppose it compares with Masterpiece Starscream (for size anyway). Really, it's cool enough that even a non-fan would appreciate it.

Thanks guys, i'll start checking out some of this stuff later. More than likely i'll end up with one of the 1/100 guys. Money IS an object and I just don't care for the Macross designs enough to warrant spending more than $30 or so on one (need money for MP Megatron). Are the 1/100 guys perfect change? Or do they require some swapping? I don't mind either way, just asking.

Ok, after research I have decided that the 1/100 is EXACTLY what I was looking for. The reviews on CollectionDX calmed any and all fears. Looks like i'll do some shopping around and pick out the "coolest looking" one.

If money is an object, and you still want a transforming toy, with good looks for display, and tough as old bubblegum, look for 1/55 bootlegs called Galaxy Defender. I have one, and it's nice to play with. Flimsy in some aspects but it's less than $5.00... what else do you want? LOL!

I love my Galaxy Defender Valk!!! This would be a great valk as a cheap first valk, but I haven't seen these around for awhile. They seem to have become sort of rare-ish, but if you can find one they should be cheap. And they look cool!

I would start with the Bandai 1/55 vf-IJ or Vf-IS. The valk is practically indestructible, very solid, less pricey, easy to transform and has some nice clicking as you transform it. The design has lasted from the eighties and is still in demand today.

1/55 is the way to go dude....its old school but its tough and durable plus having a classic design and clicking sound when u transform it.....later on when u decided to throw away ur ca$h.....go for the yamato.....1/48 and 1/60 ver 2......theyre like masterpiece TF.....but the materials used are mostly made from PVC....

You made the right choice. Everyone's first Macross toy should be the classic 1/55 Takatoku/Bandai. The 1/55 is a toy in the classic sense. Tough, durable, and ultra easy to transform. This is a toy you can "play with". If you ever really get into Macross, and have plenty of cash to burn, you can step up to Yamato's 1/48 or 1/60 toys. These are more of an intricate display piece than a toy though. Harder to transform and easier to break something if you do something wrong but they look absolutely anime accurate. The 1/60 toy will go nicely scale-wise with your MP Starscream.

Go with the 2nd version of the 1/60 VF-1's. No more removable parts like the 1st generation 1/60's. Still a little hard on the pockets, but Yamato's going 1/60 scale all the way with their Macross Valks, and they're coming out with the 2 seaters as well (VT-1, VE-1), so it's a good start.
Also, try to get at least one of the 1/48 scale valks. Always an awesome display piece, especially with the Fast Packs.
Happy hunting!

Yeah, pretty much lol. Is there a place to get Fast Packs or whatever they're called for the 1/55 line? The 1/60 I posted is tempting for the price, but I'd rather hold out for something different since I already have that one in 1/55.
