Today my mom took me shopping for my birthday (very late present). At first I though she was only going to get me Raideen. But I was shocked when she said, "that's it?". With nothing else to buy (Jeeg was not available), I decided to get the 3 SOC's I swore that I will never get: Lightan, King Joe and Spiderman. With this in mind, I am now complete again (GX01 to GX41, color versions).
It feels great to not have skipped any of the releases again. I was like this until the three that I have mentioned were released. I don't stray from the Bandai brand and SOC line and I am happy to remain this way. I also don't typically acquire the variants because of the lack of shelf space and I really like to be wise with money (my asawa/spouse typically buys my SOC's as gifts).
Know what? I've met a number of avid SOC fans and I've yet to meet anyone that has GX01 to the latest? Anyone else like me out there? Thanks.

I'm in the same boat as you...got them all (normal color) and 2 blacks, and a few doubles and triples and have Daimos preordered.

If you don't have the variants/exclusives then it is not complete, IMO. It may be complete to your own liking only. Do I have them all....NO. Will I complete them all if $10k fell from the above....still NO. ;D If I am not mistaken, GOLD may have EVERYTHING already or very close to everything SOC-wise.

The fun part of the story is that you can actually shop for SOC. Here in Montreal, if a shop has SOC it's very rare and most of the time it's outpriced.

But that's Gold...he's a "special" child....LOL ;D I think it would cost you more than $10K BTW, some of the rare SOC's are only 1 of 5 and one is 1 of 1...so if you are trying to do the Pokemon with these, you will surely be broke, not to mention if you got really crazy and bought all the accessories and non-Bandai items, like the compact mirrors, the bases, keychains, books...then there's the "SPEC" series... In the other place also known as CA (California), Northern California, we a have a couple of places to "shop" for SOC's, no there are not priced better than eBay or the net, but sometimes, if you factor shipping (EMS) you are really not that far off. Or in one occassion, when everyone was asking $100+ for Minerva back in the day, I got a store in El Cerrito, CA to get me one for $45 out the door. SoCal also have a few spots as well to walk in and buy these things. I guess we are lucky? Outside of HK, Singapore, Taiwan, Philippines, etc. We have 4 or 5 stores that carry SOC's...?

BTW, what's wrong with Lightan? I bought mine for $60 new, from a store locally...it is 18K gold plated and heavy as heck, awesome toy! Then the King Joe thing, I have the Ultraseven SOC (Has a GX-number), so makes an awesome pair. Spiderman or BKA as Leopardon...comes with a Sofubi and has lots of gimmicks and tricks...why the bias?
BTW, for the completist...I have the Lightan Display case, along with the Getter ones...Ou, Ah...LOL

I am glad I am an Incompletist. Why spend money on toys that you don't care for too much, just for the sake of being complete? Besides, like someone already mentioned, if you don't have all those rare variants, its still never complete. I wouldn't want to turn my hobby into a chore that cost me ridiculous money. But thats just me.

I wouldnt collect every robot nor every variation but im tempted to buy the Mazinger variations only, specifically the black and gold versions.
Im running out of space on my two shelves and i promised myself i wont use more than 2 shelves for toys.
Dri1 that list is impressive and very helpful to see what is left to buy.

mazfan you have the coolest mom if she buys you soc's. I'm not a completist myself, I only buy my favorites. Although, I do like to complete a series, such as Getter Dragon, Liger, and Poseidon or Aphrodai, Venus, Minerva, and Dianan. If I buy Tetsujin, I have to buy Ox. Nice collection Dri1!

My bad... I guess I am not a true "completist" since I don't have all the variants, b&w's and ultra rare ones. However, given the limited amount of the really hard to find SOC's, I guess that only less than 10 collectors can be considered as the "true completist"--if that...
My best description for me then is an all color only releases completist.
Mechaboy1: Yeah, my mom is cool... I guess she feels guilty for not getting me the Voltes and Maz toys when I was a kid in the Philippines in the 70's.

Which one of the limited ones is 1 of 5? As for 1 of 1, I heard it was a Getter Dragon variant but I didn't believe it when I read it. Any pics or info?

Thanks 00silvergt, I'll take that as a compliment ;D ;D I'd like to be a completist but I think I'll draw the line at the Iron Castle Mazinger (limited to 10 pieces worldwide I think?), supposedly costs as much as a brand new car (if the Hong Kong sellers are to be believed) Plus I passed on the Spec EVAs (felt they were too big next to the SOCs). Gold, what on earth is the "Iron Castle Mazinger"? 10 pieces? I don;t think I've ever heard or seen this mythical creature. Anyone have a photo of this figure?

It's this guy. The name "Iron Castle" is a rough translation of "Kuroganenoshiro". Close up? (someone on Robot Japan posted these pics a while back) As for the "limited to 10 pieces" part, it's listed in the SOC Media works encyclopedia last page (forgot if it's vol.1 or vol.2). Gold

Completist? Goodness no. I buy something based on its individual appeal rather than its product line; I don't own a single SOC Mazinger (sacrilege!), but I have two different Fewture versions. I have an Aoshima Getter 1 instead of the SOC version. I loooove my Xabungle and think it's one of my favorite SOCs and easily better than my Voltes V.
In contrast though, the SOC line is definitely a line where I buy a lot more stuff that I wouldn't normally, simply because I know it'll be a quality piece of work.
Essentially, I don't buy stuff just because they're SOCs, but conversely I buy a lot of stuff simply because they're SOCs.... if that makes any sense whatsoever...
