I think that I have O.D.-ed (over dosed) on the SOC line. Here are the reasons why:
- I am not too thrilled about the upcoming ones. And I have definitely O.D.-ed on Mazinger Z (despite this robot being my favorite).
- I prefer the line just releasing one or a couple a year. That's what I really liked about SOC's when I first started to collect the series a decade ago. Having just a very few a year made them more special. Now, I feel like there is a saturation per year.
- I am out of shelf space and I don't want to get another Ikea glass case (I have 2 and that's enough).
- Sad to say but I feel like I have graduated from the SOC line. Mazinger, Voltes, Grendizer, Daimos, Gaiking and others that I have been waiting for have been released. The only one I can think of now that I want is Balatak.
- The main reason why I am going to stop being an avid SOC collector is that I am not into the old school look anymore. Though I grew up watching the shows, I have grown tired of the 70's design. Blame the SPEC line for this. I now prefer the more modern and sleek look and feel of Dragonar, Falguen, Black Serena and Layzner.
With this in mind, I will now only focus on the SPEC's. Aside me appreciating their aesthetics more, I also like the fact that they are harder to find and they don't seem to churn them out a lot per year. Don't get me wrong, I will still buy some SOC's. Heck, Gunbuster and Dancouga are my favorites. Make more complex and cool looking SOC's (not too old school) and I will get them. One thing for sure, I will not get/ask for another Mazinger! I have 5 for god sakes (including Great Mazinger).
I just purchased the 3rd SOC book to commemorate the END of my collection (I have all the color versions from GX01 to 44--not too crazy about this last one either, this sort of sealed the deal to END my obsession. Plus the BPX's PX's, etc...).
Thanks for letting me vent. One thing for sure, I will continually check this message board per hour each day...

Well, tastes can change after a while. But sometimes you realize it's cyclical. Takes a bit more time to see that pattern, though.
For example, I started out collecting vinyl anime statues about 5 years ago, then became chogokin-obssessed about two years ago, and now after watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (finally)...I've found myself turning into a Haruhi/Nendoroid wh0re! But there's STILL some chogokins I have yet to acquire to round off my collection (still need the normal Mazinger-girls+Boss) & I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of time before some other old-skool robot gets me back into chogokin mode again.
So, I guess in collecting--as in life---just follow your bliss.
Oh, and the Fewture Getter reissues? MUST ACQUIRE!!

I'm on my first SOC. It's easy to see how you can get carried away with all the releases they have had. If you feel that you are jaded with the releases that are coming out, it is time to move on.

I used to like SOC much more than Aoshima , Fewture , CMS and others because I can feel their sincerity & passion for the toy they made.Although their items are not perfect & has a lot of flaws, they are better in the sense they have more play value & variety. For the past 2 years I think that SOC has come out with quite a lot of good toys.Like Gunbuster which I like very much because can be transform from vehicle to robot & it comes with tons of accessories. Also the price are quite reasonable compare to majority of the others toy which does not have so much play value. It is more for display & their price is much expensive.
But this year it seems that Bandai just reissue those items with just slight modification & different colour scheme.I wonder is it due to the economic crissis.I hope that they will keep the spirit they have like 2007 where they make more new products.I am looking forward to Daitarn 3 & Dygenguar and Aussenseiter. Also I hope that they will produce items that has never been made like God Sigma & so on.

i just buy soc stuff--and even then i don't have the complete list of robots--only the ones I like...
Voltes, Combattler, Daimos-- yup all I ever wanted...
but the other robots like mazinger and company--only because they were part of my nostalgic sentiments---
but other than that-- i don't think I will be buying any other SOC robot-- unless they do balatak as you mentioned or even Danguard Ace...
i have stopped buying other toylines a long time ago-- for money and space considerations......especially if they were just vinyl/plastic-- i liked the diecast of the SOC line...

Our hobby is like most lives: they continually change with highs and lows. I started out with a focus on all the SOCs I could obtain. That changed recently to high-end, detailed, die cast robots. I am now entering a "only old school" mecha phase - no more new/modern robots for me. I contemplated selling my non-Maz/Getter/Grendizer/Gaiking robots, but decided to pack them away. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned that they would come back to older toys that they had. I think I will do the same. Rather than sell my Gunbuster or EVAs, I'll store them away. Who knows? In a few years if I still still have that "burned out" feeling for them - then I will sell them. Or maybe I'll tire of my Fewture collection. It's all unknown.

Geez, at first I thought you were saying quits to toy collecting. Nevermind.
Actually, it doesn't matter if you stop collecting SOCs. The important thing is that you find some inspiration in toys.

I used to have this need to own everything i saw . Now I get figures that I'm more familiar with. I keep thinking that I'll sell off most of the SOC or Aoshima that i have but I think i would regret doing that. its better to pack them away and then i can always add to what i have. I think what really put me off in recent months is the repaints and the exclusives. I'm pretty sure I'm get rid of stuff that i haven't displayed in months who knows.

Luckily, I still have some shelf space left. I try to restrict my purchases to only what I like. Problem is, with all the great new stuff coming out, I end up liking most of them!! And knowing me, I end up liking the most expensive ones. Tempting as it may be to buy it all, it gets financialy impossible, so I try to be selective.

I think I O.D.'ed about 3 years ago. I like vintage characters in vintage incarnations.
Shelf space plays a part too.

Life is a constant change. The intensity of your passion to collecting certain things will dwindle, but it will come back again. Maybe not the same enthusiasm, but it wll come back. I for one hasn't even opened my Voltes & Daimos ( i have 2 of each) just because after opening the 1st pair-the excitement and enthusiasm weren't there anymore. It's like I need to buy them because I just have to, it is more of an automatic response more than being passionate about it.

Yeah, I believe that I have posted something similar before. However, I am more serious now than ever. The new Mazinger just brought me over the edge.... But you know what, seeing the latest Dygenguar and Aussenseiter just whet my appetite again. I am definitely going to acquire this baby. And since SOC's are like CRACK--I might even get the new Mazinger. No, no, no... I need an intervention.

It will never end unless you go cold turkey and just not collect anymore and/or sell off everything you have. It's the only way.
