Hi guys
Its my first time posting here, but I've been a long time collector of Japanese robots. I recently acquired a dancouga GX13 R, which was never taken out of the box, and never saw daylight. I noticed something bizarre. Some of the gray plastic parts of bigmoth (chest, both arms, and middle of thighs were discolored. But it was never exposed to sunlight, nor ever taken out of the box.
Has anyone else experienced this? I've been collecting for a very long time, and this is the very first time I'm noticing this kind of phenomenon.
What's strange is, the exterior surrounding gray plastic of the thighs are normal. Only the middle portion that springs in and out are discolored.
Anyone have any logical explanation to this?
Thanks in advance,
Ted

Things like that can happen with plastic. Sometimes parts will discolor due to the temperature where it is stored (high heat or cold or humidity) or due to chemical reaction, or the plastic compounds breaking down. There are many reasons.
Sometimes it can happen to all the plastic, sometimes it can happen to all the areas. It can be uniform in the discoloration or random. It just happens sometimes.
Either way, you got a great toy. Hope you enjoy it.

Welcome aboard. It's like Ginrai said, it's all part of long term storage, the toy most probably got stored somewhere hot like in an attic. Gold

Maybe styrofoam is creating reaction... Don't you think so ? Will check mine too. Unboxing rhymes with saving.

The thighs don't look too bad and the arms look uniform from that angle - how are they?
Also did it affect the wings or is it just the lighting where you have the toy standing?

Wow, you didn't even mention the wings.
That looks really bad.

My opened but undisplayed piece looks exactly the same. The arms, thighs and wings have yellowed. But it still looks fine. I wonder if there are any pieces out there currently that remains unyellowed. I have another MISB piece but it's staying MISB regardless of how it may look inside. =)

Still probably my favorite SoC so far. I'm a sucker for animals that combine into a robot. I never watched the show or anything, I just love the design.

Hi guys. Apologies for not mentioning the wings. I forgot they were discolored too. In person, it doesn't look this bad. This photo really accentuates the yellowing worse than it really is. But it is still very mnoticeable.
I doubt there are pieces out there that are not yellowed. I've been googling and found every other collector who owns this piece to have the same issue. BTW, Charles. It's nice to meet you here as I love your video reviews!
But I'd love to get my hands on a perfect one as I am OCD. I also love this SOC as Dancouga's design is unlike any other SOC.

Thank you for supporting my reviews. Always makes my day to know another person likes what I do. =)
I totally understand your desire to get a perfect GX-13R. The problem is whether 1 still exists.
We won't know for sure if it's a sealed piece. And I wonder if there's anyway to fix the yellowing apart from the common dipping in hydrogen peroxide treatment. I don't think any one of us what to take him apart and do it. And there's the risks of the other paint applications being washed off in the process.

I actually think that it has kind of a cool weathered look in the picture.

I actually think that it has kind of a cool weathered look in the picture. I agree. And clayrebel, I can understand your desire to get a perfect one, but even if you spent the money on a sealed one, or on an open one that was fine, there's no guarantee they won't yellow over time anyways. I forgot to mention earlier that discoloration can also be caused by chemical reaction with plastic bags or the styrofoam tray as well.

The plastic bag sounds more likely for GX-13R since all the figures are wrapped up in plastic bags.
Then again the guns that are just left on the styrofoam tray without any plastic wrapping, also had yellowing.
Hence it may be that either one causes the yellowing.
Or it is simply that the plastic is not made to last over time.

You guys are truly awesome! I would've never imagined to receive all these bits of info on my own. This is why I love forums!
I never even thought about the plastic bags causing the reaction. I'm hoping since this was released back in 2004, Bandai has improved on the quality of the plastic they use in their SOC's. I do own a Baikanfu as well, and those white plastic parts still remain pure white. But I would hate to find discoloration on the Baikanfu, as there are many white parts.
Mr. Ginrai, you do have a point. Even if I do find one flawless, it might deteriorate over time. Didn't put that into consideration.
And a nice "weathered" look huh.... I guess I can see that now. Good optimism!

I think one of the keys to prevent the yellowing is actually to paint the plastic rather tahn just mold it in color! I think all painted areas don't have the yellowing!

The gray parts should mostly be the same as the limited matte finish version, so some may have the same issue depending on which run of parts. Each and every little piece of plastic is likely made in their own injection mold sprue batches, so easy for some parts of the arms or legs to have a slightly different blend of chemicals, or be missing a preservative additive, and darken, while other parts on the same limb stay lighter, regardless of bags, foam, etc. Like said above, it seems to mostly be the storage enviroment temp/humidity.
Your lighter gray, matte version "R" looks really cool. I love the toy overall. I had most of the SOC run, but only kept Dancouga, and Godsigma during clear out.

I think we can all say that this is the first time we have seen a toy that became damaged due to age and it actually really looks good.
