What is the best Mazinger z, great Maz, and Grendizer? I assume they are SOC. I'm not concerned about screen accuracy, just look, articulation, rocket punch, and quality/durability. 7" is better but not a deal breaker. Also, not including DX. It seems GX-45 is up there but would love to hear thoughts from those more experienced. Thanks!

The Maz and Great Maz will be hotly debated. Currently the all around best Grendizer is actually the smaller SRC offering. The version that comes with the Spacer. The articulation is the best and it is really the only time that the Spacer has been properly scaled to the robot. Such that the entire robot fits inside it without modification, removal of parts or collapsing gimmicks. The SOC Grendizer is nice for how complete and all inclusive it largely is, but the robot itself is an older design with legs that telescope down into themselves and older more limited articulation. We are long overdue for a new SOC Grendizer although it looks like we will get a DX first. The SRC doesn't come with a rocket punch although the SRC Mazinger Z and Mazinkaiser rocket effect parts from the add on sets work with and are appropriate for it. (SRC's use effects parts not spring firing gimmicks)
For Maz Z you probably can't go wrong with GX-45. It is among the best articulated SOC's. The SRC offerings are also great although they are only around 4.5". The new Anime Movie accurate DC version is also quite nice. For Great Maz? There is a GX-02R re-issue that is quite nice. Also there is a DC version coming to match the Maz Z. For Great Maz the SRC is meh. The head sculpt is greatly undersized for the robot and it looks weird.
There are a few nice upper tier offerings such as the Fewture Ex ones of the SOC DX's. But I assume you are not looking into those insane price levels.

Those are some great suggestions.
GX 45 is a prince of SOC. A true gem of a gokin. If budget is not an issue, yeah, DX Great Mazinger is as accurate as I can see as far as proportion is concerned. Absolutely a beautiful figure.

In terms of articulation among the SOC Maz versions, GX-45 is king I wonder why Bandai didn't just implement the same extending hip/crotch gimmick for GX-70, made more sense than the removable hip piece.

Best Mazinger to me is the newer GX70 Mazinger
as for Great Mazinger I would also go for the new GX73 ..
Best Grendizer is the CM's Grendizer minus the spacer QC issues

Fewture EX Gokin. Original versions for maz and great maz, not that new, tacky chrome garbage.

Which Mazinger Z do you want to get? like the one from the anime 1972 or Shin Mazinger 2009? If you want the original then go for one of these.. minus the one in the right. GX-01R or GX-01R 40th Ann. also you can get this one if you want something new. Soul of Chogokin GX-70 If you want Shin Mazinger then look no further.. GX-45 ton the left. Now if you want great Mazinger then I would recommend one of theses. GX-02R or GX-02R Tamashii Nashion. or wait and get the upcoming great Mazinger GX-73. all the ones I just mention for you.. many people considre them one of the best on the market on that scale. And stay away from the +$300 Mazinger & great Mazinger figures for now. And remember you don't have to pay too much $$$$$ to enjoy your hobby.

Best Mazinger z, the SRC Mazinger highly poseable and you can find alot of accessories, if you are more like a display only no touch guy then get the GX-01R
Best Shin Mazinger, the GX-45 is the best hands down even the SRC version is not as good as the SOC
Best Great Mazinger, sadly the true Great Mazinger out there is the DX but if you don't want it, get the GX-02R 20th anniversary version, or the regular GX-02R if the price is high, even the SRC is really good
Best Grendizer, is the SRC anime version that come with the Spazer and a beautiful white paint, if the price is get a regular SRC Grendizer and a Spazer alone without the Grendizer, there is another awesome Grendizer by Fewture but its expensive at the moment

Thanks for the awesome suggestions! I've been researching after reading all of this. For Maz, I think I will go for the shin GX-45. I love the height and the articulation gets great reviews. Plus, Maz haz rocket punch! For Great Maz, I might wait a bit. Perhaps the GX-02. Not sure if the new DC version is right for me. For grendizer, it looks like the solo SRC version is the way to go. They will look nice next to my vintage 5" shogun Great Maz. I've got the Hero Collection 6" Great Maz but I'll likely sell it. Now, to begin the search for some good deals on these guys.
Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on non-Chogokin versions of these - the plastic ones? Are they worth looking at or are their questions about how time treats them?

Bandai is supposed to be re-releasing an Anniversary edition of GX-02R somewhere in March. So that might be the good one to get as it should be out there at MSRP (assuming thats not a Web Exclusive?) edit: Ouch which it is. It still might be cheaper tamashii.jp/item/11636/?wovn=en

Thanks. I will definitely be looking out for this. I assume the price stateside will be $100+ but that's what I will likely have to pay for a GX-45 or a SRC Grendizer.

I see an SRC Grendizer iron version is coming out in May. Worth the wait? There's so no difference between them. I think they use the same mold but only with different colors, and accesories. I would say go & get the one you like or the cheapest.... first ver. spazer ver. Kurogane finish ver.

I see an SRC Grendizer iron version is coming out in May. Worth the wait? Honestly? No. The Spazer Anime Accurate Version with the pearlized white limbs looks head and shoulders above the original. While I can't compare it to the Kurogane Grendizer, I have mine sitting next to Kurogane Maz Z, and it's like night and day. The new version might be an affordable option? But the packaged Spazer version is still widely available and is not that expensive. Cheaper than a cheap SOC.

I found the following prices with shipping: anime SRC Grendizer w/spazer $120, original release SRC Grendizer $150 (eBay), and Kuragane SRC grendizer - $100 (Nippon-Yasan preorder). How are those prices? Are there any other good websites to look for chogokin?
The spazer is not a big deal for me. I like the look of the 1st release and this would be my top choice but I am opening up to the others. The anime version is cool but I'm not sure about the white leg and arm parts. Seems like it would clash with other chogokin. Does it come off as too cartoonish? The Kuragane finish is nice but not sure about matte black on shoulder parts... decisions...

Id go with Anime myself. $120 shipped is a fair price for both.
I have both original and the anime version, and the spazer is so very cool.
A cool thing about this SRC is, do correct me if im wrong, but its only one i know that fans complained enough about the prototype That Bandai actually caved and changed it.

As far as Grendizer goes do you guys prefer the SOC or SRC? SOC all the way , better bang for the buck , then the brave gokin grendizer , then the src grendizer , then all the rest

As far as Grendizer goes do you guys prefer the SOC or SRC? The SOC has more accessories and features. But is a bit crude by modern standards. The legs tend to telescope when handling, etc. the SRC is my preferred. It doesn't have the double Spacer etc. but it is a nice solid compact and articulated set that does everything I want. The anime version with Spazer preferred. The Brave Gokin looks nice, but is notorious for QC issues and unexpected problems.
