I think it's game over once you're buying stuff and not opening it, unless you're into the mint-in-box warehouse storage thing... For me it's collectible art, and Gokin forms a very small subsection of my overall collection which covers a multitude of media and themes. I have several medium sized displays in my lounge room and home office; all of them carefully integrated into my homes decor so as to never get in the way, or require frequent dusting/care.
I keep tabs on the market and make a move whenever something takes my fancy, but I don't really "hunt" or overly concern myself with any purchase. In my experience there's always something cool out there and it's more fun to just go with the flow. Once an item is acquired it will be handled until I find a display pose and location that suits me, usually within the week I will no longer be handling the item. For me it's about the whole collection and admiration from my sofa or office chair prevails.
As for Bandai's Voltron, I'm really not a Voltron fan per se, but I am drawn to the design and quality of the GX-71, it has all the hallmarks of a modern classic and was therefore a jewel in my eyes and worth breaking my standing rule of not pre-ordering expensive toys.

I think many are going to be extra impressed when they have Voltron in hand. The toy isn't very photogenic... Are we looking at the same Voltron? Looks pretty photogenic to me. That's my point, it's even better in person.

36k? don't buy it...look around, there WILL be a better deal somewhere. Try Yodobashi Camera and have a good look around in Radio Kaikan, there's also the building (don't know the name, sorry) on same block as Radio Kaikan - on the corner, about 20 meters away. I'm sure you've already been there, it's full of consignment boxes on the ground and basement floors, but newer stuff is sold further up the building. Give LABI in downtown Shinjuku a shot too, they might have it there, and there's a small Yodobashi around the corner from there (2 min walk) that sometimes has stock of things that sell out at the bigger stores. Electric town in Shinjuku might be worth a shot too, there's a good Yodobashi and another large LABI there, though this LABI might not be worth the visit. Have fun Thanks bud! Im travelling with my wife and 3yr old kid and really hard to go around. I went to ami ami and asked if I can pre order and pay and said no. They say its a first come first serve basis and have to come back on thursday. With my situation and me leaving on the 30th also have asked alot of random stores saying all sold out, had no choice so I just bought it. Im sure that alot of guys will get it cheaper but no regrets. Thanks for the tips and advices though. I might get one for my mate Oh I bought it in the 2nd floor in radio kaikan. You did the right thing then : ) and in any event, it's extra special when something in your collection was physically bought by you in Japan. Have a safe trip home!

Didn't really care for Voltron as a kid; buying this purely because it does the design justice & it'll (hopefully) be another modern classic by Bandai.

I'm not actually a Voltron fan, but I figured this would turn out to be a gorgeous SOC; not disappointed.

Hi guys, New to the boards here - and man, SOC Voltron is looking good. I'm going to Japan from the 21st to the 30th of Dec this year and wanted to pick this up in Japan My question is - I know that the release date is the 31st of Dec (according to the Nippon Yassan website) do they actually release it in Japan in a much earlier state for any of the SOC line? (This would be my first SOC) Thanks guys! Radio Kaikan in Akiba has stores that'll have it on the day, and even earlier. It'll be very easy to grab one, have fun.

Are they bare metal? or chromed? that will answer the question. Probably the lighting anyway - it'll be great in any event.

This Voltron was obviously going to be a winner from the get-go.

Kinda surprised Bandai hasn't done the vintage comparison thing for their marketing. If I wasn't already sold, it would have tipped me over in no time.

Kinda get the feeling this 'Monster' will eventually hit the clearance bin. It's too hard on shelf space and the wallet, and it being a background cannon-fodder mech doesn't help either. I just hope we see the regular Destroids sooner, rather than later.

One thing people seems to forget, it that i tmight be impossible to get a full anime accurate version of a toys, no matter wich one. Reason; Physics A figure must stand on his own, have balance. The weight must be central, if not the joint will weaken over time (Fewture Models ex.) This is Voltron, it'S not Optimus Prime with it's big leg, where the weight is down. Just the fact that the central piece is the largest and biggest one, the Black Lion, the torso must be short for the gravity center, else it will tend to fall down. And also, those are still prototype that you see! You can get an anime accurate Voltron in robot form no problem. Bandai's SRC line is the perfect format for it. Just as they did with the Sentai's and God Sigma. The problem is when you try and make a perfect transforming anime accurate Voltron. Which is never going to happen. The Lions proportions shift via anime magic. Not to mention the dreaded lion legs disappearing. Honestly looking back at some of the original GoLion materials and offerings, I can't help but suspect that Toei and Popy/Bandai all likely considered the exposed Lion Legs in robot mode to be the cannon detail. All of the period toys have them, including the ones that don't transform. The only place the legs disappear is in the cartoon. And this was obviously anime magic to reduce art and animation tasks. I think that's what he was saying? maybe he just didn't elaborate enough. I too agree, transforming characters that require "anime magic" (basically all of them, really) will always face issues in three dimensions, which is something we all know. Anyway, Bandai has gone with a lovely vintage toy vibe; and in my book it's a success. Provided the engineering and finish is of a high standard, they'll have a winner that will have people singing praises by early next year. It's kinda weird that some are trying to pass judgement going off that super rough Wonderfest prototype XD

Some figures would be a big win for me, it's always cool to have in-scale figures for reference.

Yeah, this Voltron is gonna be killer in hand, so glad Bandai went with a vintage toy aesthetic.

Even with their big-ass heads, those lions look sweet - especially with their organic poses. That's a pretty dinky display for Voltron btw...
