Hey, Guys let us use this thread to dump knowledge about Ultraman, the original or whatever toys so it will be easier to find the answers in one place. Speaking from experience it is not easy to collect Ultraman. I remember walking into KMH when I made the conscience decision to get into Ultraman, the questions and confusion that came about.
"Can't I just get an Ultraman toy?"
"Which one?"
"The original one."
"Which one?"
Kamen Rider is even more confusing, luckily I had Carlo and the internet (in that order) in order to facilitate my questions. But that for another thread.
Let me start by clearing up the ABC type confusion:
Ultraman Type A: This is the original suit from the first few episodes of the original Ultraman TV show. It is easily distinguishable because it looks like Ultraman has a bad acne problem. This is because the first mask was not as refined as the others. Also you will notice the eyes of Type A it is smaller more elliptical and slightly more tilted. The creator of the show, Eiji Tsuburaya intended to make Ultraman look more human. In fact, albeit it was somewhat absent in the American or English language adaptation is Ultraman's battle cries and speech.
The two toys in 1/6 or 12" version of this Ultraman type that comes to mind are the Bandai and the Medicom. The Bandai is slightlly taller than the Medicom and has a small ship and a beta capsule included. Much like the Testsujin 28 SOC, the beta capsule is used to activate the light eyes and power-up or warning chest light that all Ultramen have.
Medicom has a more realistic version, in fact the Medicom albeit absent of flashy gizmos and gadgets look like they took Ultraman out of the TV and packaged him. Medicom uses the RAH301 body to for Ultraman Type A.
I prefer the Medicom version for the realism, but if you are into gadgets and flash, then the Bandai is for you. The Bandai is harder to find since it has been out of production for a few years now. But eBay is a good source. It will cost about the same ~$150 + shipping for either one.
TYPE B:
After Episode 37, I think it was they changed the outfit, probably, like most Japanese shows due to audience opinion and ratings. this one is a radical change. TYpe B adds a more defined lower and up lip. The eyes are no longer slanted and are a bit larger and more round. Type B has Elf like shoes or pointy shoes. The toy selection for 12" and 1/6 is the same: Medicom's B type will be more expensive since it is a mail order only feature. It usually sells for as high as $300 and as low as $200.
TYPE C:
This is the Classic Ultraman, most of us has known and loved. A more refined Type B face with a heftier body sans the elf shoes. The 12" selection is the same as the others. Nice thing here is that the Medicom is a regular release and should also be the same price as the Bandai.
Saiyoudo has released a 2-pack Type A and Type B they are calling SRC Super Reborn Chogokin. The PVC figures are designed albeit maintaining the original look. They have been dubbed, "Ultraman on Steroids." They do look just like that. Ultraman who, like Barry Bond shas gotten a mysterious white liquid rub down. The eyes glow in the dark.
That's it for now. Please feel free to contribute more and more so we can have an ultraman Knwoledge cache here in RJ.
