Great series but I'm a little confused about how it fits in Macross continuity. It says it's the year 2059 so is it before or after Macross Plus? Plus if it is a continuation of Macross 7 then shouldn't Max and Millia still be alive since Macross 7 was set in I think 2038. Plus i'm gathering this is like a exploration colony so they have no ties to Earth. Anyway that last scene reminded me of how Rick saved Minmay in the original series. Macross has a knack for recycling minor plot devices... if we liked it the first time, we come back for more! BTW, Macross Plus was 2040 - it introduced the VF-19 and VF-22 chasis (in prototype form, of course) and the main story line of Macross 7 was 2045 when those 2 Valkyrie chasis were common place. I'm really liking the new Valkyrie design in Frontier... kind of a combination between those two. The ejection system was a little weird tho... Without giving a spoiler, I'll only say, "oh don't tell me that kid is gonna..." and then he did. Oh yeah, I also got the Shinsen fansub torrent linked from www.animesuki.com - so fast! There were like 300 peers at the time. actually it's not just macross, but some of the animes released as well and other live-action shows. Japanese writers have this inkling of "exploring" other possibilities and scenarios for a particular show. Toku show for example: Kamen Rider Kabuto tv series versus Kamen Rider Kabuto God Speed Love movie. Me and most fans thought that this was an explanation on how tendou knew partially about his destiny on him being a chosen one. But later the director/producers reiterated that this was an "alternate universe" and should not be connected to the series' timeline. Well, as long as they give us great shows, remixes, reinterpretation, or whatnut, i won't complain hehe ;D

Ahhhh.... the VF-17 Nightmare! An absolute Favorite!
I wish Bandai (if they did get the complete toy license for the Valks for Frontier) would re-invent the VF-17 Nightmares. Not the 1/65 clunkers they released in the 90's for M7 (although I do have a soft spot for them).

Ok; so I just finished watching episode 1-
Freaking awesome!
I like the setting-- the emigration/colonization fleet premise reminds me a little of Battlestar Galactica, except not as dark, gritty, or oppressive. And the colony ships were very well done. You can easily share the characters' illusion that they are in a natural, outdoor environment without loosing sight of the fact that they are actually confined to large bio-domes, with nothing between them and the harsh vacuum of space except for the relatively thin dome shells.
I also dug the characters. The producers managed to flesh them out in an amazingly short time without it feeling rushed or unnatural. I'm especially intrigued by the Idol Singer, Sheryl. At first, my reaction to her was "What a B****!", but I get the feeling that there is a lot more to her than what is readily apparent. Of course, I could be wrong...
The action scenes were very well executed. I started watching this show expecting some bland, mid-grade mecha action, and soon found myself fully engrossed in the show. The space combat scenes were incredibly fluid and kinetic, and the threat being posed by the invading force felt very real. The last battle scene was particularly captivating; I found myself reacting to the invasion of the enemy mech/creature and the confrontation between it and the protagonist (Altoh?) on an almost visceral level.
The only complaint I have about the show is that at times, the action scenes were almost too fast. If the intention of this was to make the viewer feel the "fog of war", then great job; there were times when I had to struggle a bit to keep track of which ship or mech was being blown apart by whom. Fortunately, these instances were few and far between, and for the most part, the pace of the battles helped the scene by making the danger seem more urgent and real.
All in all, I'd call this a great start to a new series! I eagerly await the next episode.

AIA IZ has subbed Episode 2 (google is your friend)...it kind of sucks since it is sort of a transitional episode. It has the same elements as the original that makes you feel like taking out the "perfect collection" and watching it all over again.
