Hi,
I just picked up a loose Voltron toy and it seems so new. How can I tell if my Voltron is real or a knockoff?

Start with checking the markings (the Popy version has GB-...) and post pics here.

also you want to check each individual lion. sometimes you can have a lionbots and voltrons and golions all in one voltron. also you might want to check to see if this is a trendmasters release. that one is 100% plastic. if item is not marked does not mean it's not authetic either. the popy stickers sometimes will have fallen off or been removed. also are the launch mechanisms operable? on most releases of these the firing mechanisms have been removed due to new toy registlation circa 1984. the lionbots do fire missiles. basically there is a mountain of different variations in the different releases. even between the bandai one made in japan and the bandai one made in taiwan there is a ton of variations. i can babble on all day about this.............

check on the black lion forehead, if it has a green metallic rectangular sticker it is not a lionbot. Some genuine will have the foil stickers underneath the lions. Some will be labeled Made in Japan or made in Taiwan on genuines. Under the red and green lions' jaws they may read Bandai.
Lionbot have so many variations that you can get thrown off. I have a set of red and green lionbot lions that are completely plastic but identical molds to the diecast set.
Trendmasters diecast has fins on the shoulders of Voltron.(rear end of the red and green lion)
Some lionbots change certain things on the cast, for example the waist on the blue lion has blocky things on the sides and some knockoffs have this rounded. Also the red part where the number 4 is does not pull up on the lionbots or is raised more than a genuine.
way too much stuff...you should post detailed pics

I think you should also check the weight of the figures and how the plastic itself feels, a friend of mine got one and his plastic felt for him extremely fragile. he broke a small piece that is under the black lion head behind the jaw without doing anything.

The Black Lion has a green sticker on its forehead, and all the Lions have "Made in Japan" stickers on them. The "Bandai" logo is in Japanese? I also have the Trendmasters version, wich is easy to tell apart because of the lighter colors. Thanks for the responses everybody!

Even with the green forehead square and the Japan stickers, it can be a Matchbox reissue of the original. The way to tell is that all the little firing mechanisms, like the Yellow Lion's ear cannons or his back cannon are disabled (no springs). And also they have rounded teeth.

On the subject of Voltron (Popy Go Lion), what's the difference between 1st and later issues of the Popy Go Lion? I heard something about the elbows being chromed or just gray plastic.

What chachi said. This is yakked about in great detail in some old thread I can't find now, but to summarize: 1st Popy box = chrome front & rear half middle/elbow joints & tails on red & green lions 2nd popy & Godaikin box = elbow joints that are half chrome/half gray plastic 3rd popy & Godaikin box= front and rear half of mid/ elbow joints all gray plastic
Robot's Face paint variations of blue/black/silver combo.
Also, different levels of upper tooth sharpness, getting more rounded/duller as time passed, with most dull teeth on Matchbox Voltrons
Don't ever buy into the idea that any of these variants is 100% gospel, as being in ONLY one type of box release. Just like in automotive manufacturing, there are constant running changes depending on what's in supply chain for assembly line any given time. Always something legit that throws a wrench in anyone's effort to pin down or claim purity in release details.

Some of the more fascinating variants are in the Taiwan LionBots. There are 4 belt buckle variants I have seen:
1) Standard Star 2) Upside down Star 3) Diamond shape 4) V shape - On this version the blue lion also has whisker marks both on it's cheeks and beside the nose and ridged white areas in it's back.

Oh yeah! I forgot about the auxilary missle launching pods in the seperate small packs. I think the original Popy's had red launchers, and the later releases & Godaikn had gray launchers. Least that's what I've seen.

I find the Korean bootlegs to be even more fascinating even though they are plastic... I'll be posting a video review real soon comparing it to the normal diecast version, so stay tuned EDIT: and here it is!
