So, after my getter robo build for Halloween, i decided to take on a more difficult mask: Maz. I used the OVA version of the SOC Maz (gx-07) as the guide, and built the entire thing from scratch. Still need to give it a paint job and add the spikes, but other than that she's done. By far my hardest build so far, but the work on the getter costume really helped. The thing fits like a glove, and is relatively airy and comfortable...plus it's a lot easier to fit through doorways than the getter mask Hope yall like it! ^Lens Flares added for effect

Thanks! It ended up being way harder to make than i expected...especially trying to get the hover pileder all lined up with enough room inside to fit my head in there Was originally planning on following this up with a great maz, but might skip it and try a gaiking instead Ooh, and in case anyone's wondering, it's made from foam floor tiles...the big 2'x2' ones you use for gym floors and kids' play rooms.

Yea, the mats are great! Total price for all the materials in this guy is around $5, so not a bad return on my investment I just need to find something to use for the spikes and she'll be done.

Spikes....... Hey! You know those old tubes of Silicone glue (actually, Liquid Nails; or Caulk) that are used with caulk guns? Next time just go to your neighborhood Dollar Store in the hardware section and look at them tubes of Caulk... Look at 'em closely at the tips... ...the tips extend from the main tube body, and taper like a spike. Cut the entire tip full length from the main body of the tube... ...So, There ya go, SPIKES! zozo-Magengar

hm...that will probably be too short. I need em around 6-7" long and 1.5-2" base diameter. I'm thinking of using nosecones from model rockets.
I checked the dollar store yesterday in hopes of finding some random cheap thing to use, but no luck.

Thanks man and yea...I'm going to finish up a VF-1S/Jetfire head I've already mocked up, and then do a Gaiking based off the gx-27 head (normal version, not the powered up version). Every time I have a party at my place, everyone ends up chucking on the helmets, so I'm sure we'll get some good group shots once I have enough to go around

lil update: been swamped with work lately, but just got the neck spikes yesterday, so i blasted em with paint and stuck em in. primed the whole mask as well and removed the red parts around the eyes. I wanted to make nicer versions of these and put them on after I paint the rest of the mask, to get a nice clean edge. anyways...here's a quick, blurry cameraphone shot for now:)

Wow! That is crazy good! How do you make these masks (including the Getter-1) look so nice?!... the lines are so crisp and their detail is incredibly good!!!

Thanks man To make em, I start off by taking front, back, and side pics of the toy I want to base the mask off of, then take em into Flash and map out the lines and dimensions for each panel (I'm a Flash designer, so I work quicker in that program than in Photoshop or anything else). Print em out on some scrap paper to make sure the dimensions and curves are right, then trace the template onto the foam and cut with a VERY sharp xacto. The foam dulls the knife pretty quickly, so I switch blades often. Once it's cut out, I do a quick bead of hot glue along the seam, stick the parts together, then tape the seam so it stays really tight. After that dries, I go back in and dump a bunch more glue on the back of the seam to give it more support. As long as you are REALLY careful lining up the joint,s it keeps a clean edge. I try to use folds as much as I can too, instead of actually cutting and gluing the pieces. Like the getter's ears/spikes for example, I just cut some triangular notches down the folds and glued it on the inside...same with Maz's mouthpiece.
