Some of you may know that I recently purchased a Jumbo Machinder Dragun from a fellow member. I have read that there are different versions of these and this might be the the 3rd one. Does anyone know the differences between all the releases? Maybe a link/blog? Also, I have the repro decals incoming. Should I place both the lightning AND the inverted V decals on his legs?

Thanks for the link! It is still missing some details, I believe. The differing arms (from Mazinger?) weren't mentioned. If I truly have the 3rd version, I don't need the lightning bolts decals, right? a post from a few days ago covered that one, i think There were some tidbits there but nothing detailed and conclusive.

From your photo and looking at the legs, it looks to have a different shine on them and the appearance of where the lightning stickers used to be at. Maybe is some other glare.

Yeah, I sold it to him. Its a 3rd edtion and it had lightining bolts. The main difference is that the 3rd edtion did not come with saw blades in the cuffs. You can put the "V" stickers on the legs if you want to and get the arms off of a 2nd edtion junkbot and it would be just like a 2nd edtion. The only difference I can think of with Mattel 1st edtion is that the 1st edition I think had a different wheel mounting design.

What I would do is this. Put the "V"s on the legs but keep the lightning bolts in storage. Wait for a 2nd edtion Junk Dragon to appear and get the saw blade arms off of it. Then when you want to sell him, sell the robot, the non-sawblade arms and the lightning bolt stickers all in one package. That way the new owner can choose what he wants to do. I hate the lightning bolts personally. No reason for them, purely American invention.

Head is a slightly different design, wheels are built into the feet as opposed to removable and the forearms not only have the blades but also do not have the notches in them for the clip on star shooter (the 1st had a wrap around belt to hold the shooter on instead of a clip). The first may also be marked with just "Made in Japan" on the back with no other copyright info for Popy in Japanese unlike most of the other figures.

Youre talking about the Popy. I got a 1st editon Mattel in the first few weeks that it came out. It may have had different wheels and stickers on it than the other two Mattel editions but they all had the same head and starshooter clip. I remeber it clearly, it had a starshooter clip, all the Mattels did as far as I know, unless there was a very early batch that came in that had that but me and all my friends that got them didnt have that. As for "made in Japan" and the copyright info, thats written on every Mattel Ive see so far reguardless of edtion. Ive never seen a Mattel without it.

Ok I just checked the history and youre right 999, the first edtion that came in was a re-packaged Popy but it must have been very very rare and were sold out quickly because mine came with a mixture of 1st and 2nd edtion stuff on it. Mine had a star shooter clip, a ton of stars, axes with spikes on the top and a extra sticker on the chest I think. I remeber that it was kinda small and it fell off. I was living in Long Beach California at the time and Mattel was right there so maybe some of the local market had factory "hybirds" in circulation at the time? I rember it clearly, and everybody on my block got them right when they came out.

This toy is exactly like the one that I had back as a kid in Beaumont, TX. As you can see, it has the "Made in Japan" imprinted on it but there are no other manufacturing marks on the toy. No clip impressions for the shooter on the arms(this one used the strap instead) and the black lines painted in on the collar. This is the 1st release version in the US by Mattel. The ones which have the clip-on shooter are the 2nd ed. versions.

does he have shorter feet than the 2nd? Mine didnt have short feet.. and it had those black lines on the neck.. But I know it had a shooter clip, I remember it. I think I had mine was a California mixture of the two. I clearly remember that clip, and there was a little black sticker with some Japanese writing on it and a "G" right under his blue chest stickers, it fell off if memeory serves. Memory is a tricky thing.. but I think I remember it correctly.

another thing Ive been seeing is saw blades AND lightning bolt sitickers on the same jumbo. I didnt think the bolts came in until the saw blades were dropped.. isnt that true?

Im looking at the photos of the feet.. between the first two.. I cant remember what ones mine had.. could have been the short ones.. Does anyone have a photo of the star shooter strap?
that link about Dragun says "there were AT LEAST 4 different relases" I bet in the early days Mattel had a few varients of the 1st relase..

The star shooter with the strap is the (same) one that came in the xx or zz-4 expansion Other than not having the ZZ branded across the top face. The arm strap was so you(ie. the owner) could put it on your own arm and shoot it. It never held on very well. By then again the clip on later editions was flimsy and probe to breakage.
I have an early edition and the head mold is different. It's more sqUashed or wide looking front on. I'll pictures for comparison.

The 1st version is basically a re-packaged Popy and is characterized by:
~ No indents for the shooter - Toy required a black strap to mount the shooter as the shooter was a Mattel add-on. ~ Shorter feet - These are the original Getter Dragun feet replaced by Mattel in subsequent batches ~ Softer head with black stripes painted in the collar lines ~ Buzz saw arms _ These are also seen in the 2nd version but removed in later versions.
Keep in mind that some toys which you may see on-line or on Ebay may have had parts or decals swapped out so it is possible to find a Dragun with buzz saw arms and lightning bolt legs.

Great, I think I had a California varient that was between 1st and 2nd edition.. It was a 1st edtion with elements of 2nd edition, namely that starshooter clip. I never saw that strap at all In California back in those days. Califorina is wierd, when I saw Star Wars on the 3rd day it came out, it had a few scenes in it that were taken out. Namely a scene were Lukes friend on tattooine tries to talk him into joining the rebellion. Anybody else see that? ..and when Aliens came out in California, it had a scene with the robot controlled autiomatic guns that was taken out.

So can anybody confirm if my specimen is the 3rd or 4th version?
Now if my version originally had the lightning bolt decals and I place the inverted V decals instead, will I be crucified? ;D Is that a no-no in the JM world? I really like the inverted V vs the lightning bolts.

I guess it is a 4th, I did not know about the 1st straight up Popy re-package version, other people on here said it was a 3rd but now Im not sure. He didnt cost you much and hes in good shape, I do whatever you want with him as long as you dont damage him.
