Awesome job! That looks super mint already...even though it wasn't cheap, looking at it now makes it worth every penny!

hmmmm. didnt the popy have gold eyes? i had one years ago and i could swear the eyes were gold. then again, so many jumbo pieces had their variations. i doubt they used a mattel head since the daimos jumbo was old by the time the USA version was realeased. the red eyes are cooler anyway.

The original head that it came with has gold eyes (take a close look at the first picture).
Since I didn't have the time today to spend cleaning and repainting it, I swapped it out temporarily for a reasonably decent Mattel head.
Hopefully I will have some time this weekend to spend doing the real restoration work (cleaning, painting, making decent decals, etc.) on this piece but for now it's built back up to the point where I won't drive myself crazy looking at it.

congrats on the great piece. hes the best jumbo and the worst shogun. thats so funny. those red eyes make him look like a live tokusatsu character. he looks ultra cool with the mattel head.

Congrats, it's really a nice Jumbo. Lots of work but it looks you have everything necessary to do it, tools, pieces and skills.
By the way, what kind of paint do you for the head?

I'll probably work on it with acrylics and my airbrush. I'll test everything first though for adhesion and color match on a Mattel Daimos junker head.

Ok, thanks for the tip. I had good results with the Tamiya paint on my custom stuff, if I go for a repaint on my Grendizer I might use that also. Thanks again.

You should have no problem with acrlics on the vinyl head. I stripped my older Gaiking and did a repaint to match the Popy edition. It's been on for over a year. No signs of cracks, pealing, etc.

Had a chance to do a bit more work on the Popy Daimos.. ~ Created new molds and made a set of red, hollow cast, large missiles for him. (they only weight 6 grams each) ~ Repainted his head to touch up his golden eyes and diadem on his forehead. ~ Re-worked the decals. Added the "Fighting Daimos" waist decal to match the one the toy originally came with, added the wrap around boot decals and punched up the contrast on the rest so that they now "pop" a bit more. Still more work to do on it but I am now happy enough with the figure to display it with the rest of my Jumbos.

He is looking fantastic! Nice work on the restore & decals. Don't forget to make the head decal as well.
You need to cast that red upper chest cover, yellow chest piece, yellow leg arrows & red cuffs and a set of your red missiles and sell those as a set!

Awesome work on the Daimos.
Would be good to repro the upper red piece. I saw this one on ebay as well, and was interested in it for the leg missiles and the upper chest piece. Glad you got the jumbo and making it look more original again.

DoE: This one is the Popy from Ebay. I still have my original, modified Mattel Daimos as well. Will: I actually have the molds to make the large red missiles, yellow chest piece and yellow shin daggers. I am still working on the arm cuff mold (the one I have made is "good" but not "great") and I plan on making one for the red upper chest piece as well. Bourno: I knew as soon as I saw it posted that I was going to buy it, I just didn't know how much I'd end up paying for it (ouch!). The Popy one (in any condition) just shows up too rarely for me to have let it slip away. Rodman: Will a quick shot from my cell phone work?

That pic looks great. I love the work you're doing! Is there any chance you'll be able to convert the Mattel Daimos to the full Popy Daimos, upper thigh missiles and all? If so, send me a pm with a relative timeline and price. I'd be more than happy to send my Daimos off to 'Luclin's Summer camp'!!!

While I can probably swing almost anything else on a Mattel conversion and bring one up to this point: ..or just a bit further by adding the red plastic band to the upper chest and repainting the head to match the Popy (golden eyes and diadem); to get the Mattel upper legs to match the Popy version would require either: ~ Cutting a big chunk out of each of the Mattel thighs and patching in a filler plate to attach a repro missile launcher setup to. (which is probably a bad idea) Or ~ Rotary casting a complete pair of Daimos legs out of urethane and then attaching a repro missile launcher to each of them. Neither option would be easy (or inexpensive) to pull off correctly and frankly I am not sure it is an undertaking I want to start in on just now.

Having leg missiles on a Mattel would be cool, but a good amount of work to try and make happen as you mentioned.
I would go for cutting the legs and making a repro missile rack fit that way. Last year, I started to make a mold for Grendizer lower legs, and abandoned it after getting one, first mold made. The time / cost / pricing just wouldn't been good for trying to make a Goldorak into looking more like a Grendizer.

i was going to try a similar project last year by splicing the outer upper legs along the lines, folding them inside the leg, and (hopefully) hold the pieces in place and anchor the new hip launcher with a screw.
i used my digital calipers to get the scale of the piece to make using a photo. i still have those measurements if you want them. i dont have any time for more projects right now.
you restorations are killer, and again, daimos with red eyes on your converted mattel just looks extra cool.

I love those disc elbow joints in Daimos' arms... ...I wish my LJN Voltron had Those joints instead of the dumb "roll-on deoderant ball" socket joint elbows. Now I'll have to brainstorm on how to make my own disc elbow joints for my Voltron. Nice work on that Daimos! zozo-mag
