5 total layers of foam, ranging from 1/2" to 3" thick. I'm hoping when this is done it will be scale for the 5" die casts. (About 1/144 scale for magengar, lol)

Trying hard to figure out how to light it up. The closer I look at the first picture of it in the comics, the more I realized, it has windows! Now I'm incorporating plexi... A little more to it than I thought. Getting interesting....

Go with LEDs. They will be tiny and/or flexible enough for you without the heat.

Dang, that's gonna look Wicked Badazz! Windows: if you're gonna use plastic for the windows, try some pieces of blue translucent plastic cut from juice and/or soda bottles... they're flexible, and you can cut them to shape and form. zozo-mag

I'll pick up the small dowel rods today at work for the pillars. I have some really thin plexi left over from the frames I built for my autographed comics I put in the display cases. I have to figure out how to mount it in place and still look right. The comics are not very detailed. Up until yesterday, i thought the building was all stone. I never realized it had windows until I looked closely at the patterns in the shadowing!
It's going to be the Shogun Sanctuary from the comics boma83.
LED's is the way I want to go Mike, I just have to be careful with the way the interior is seen.

If this project becomes a success, you'll wanna graduate to sculpt a rock-hard version with This....... waterputty.com/about_water-putty/I keep stocks of this putty by da ying yang, it's my favorite putty! You can find it at your local hardware store for dirt-cheap, too! zozo-mag

That's a thought... Picked a 4 pounder up at work! I'm going to glue some of the pieces together tonight and I should be able to coat it this weekend. If it dries to the ivory color it says it does, that would be awesome!!

Use HOT water so it will set fast. It cures in about a day, then you can "wet-sculpt" it (add water to the surface to soften it for sculpting with a knife or whatever sculpting tool, and smoothing it with wet finger tips). It dries rock-solid in about a week, after that you'll have to sculpt it by grinding/filing into it. It's also good for mother-molds, and mock parts for casting silicone molds around it after it's painted with a coat of latex or acrylic paint.... that way you can use a mold release-agent on it for silicone molds. Overall, it's very versatile; and a cheap alternative to Sculptey oven-bake clay. zozo-mag

It took me a little bit to get used to it. I mixed the first batch too wet then tried to apply it. I managed to play with it enough to get it to the right consistency to get it coated. The main bottom half is coated now and drying, waiting for a little smoothing. Messy stuff but I foresee a lot of uses! Thank you for the tip!!

Glad you like the stuff. If you use less water you can get a thicker consistency. But, yeah, ya gotta Stir the heck out of it so it doesn't get clumpy, because some of the powder gets trapped inside the clumps formed by air bubbles inside the mixture. The first time I ever started using it I experimented with different water ratios and temperatures. Hot water works good. Next time I make a batch I will use Boiling water and see it that will make it set even faster, for casting solid shapes which I can sculpt into later on. zozo-mag It took me a little bit to get used to it. Coating this thing is proving to be a PITA!! Nothing to hold on to since I have to do all sides and the top. Tough first piece, but if it comes out the way I think it will, it'll be worth it. One step at a time.... While waiting for the bottom to dry, I can work on the top piece and get it ready for the interior design that you can see through the windows. I wish the comics had a few more detailed pictures of it, but it gives me a chance to design some of it like I imagined it as a kid.

Tom what did you coat it with? How about a very thin layer/coat of plaster of Paris?
I used to use that over dioramas in grade school (used foam coated with plaster of Paris to make a kick ass model of the eastern Atlantic Ocean/ continental slope/ shelf).
Then it can be hand painted with acrylic paint or spray painted etc.

I'm using the water putty that Tony suggested Mike. Now that I've been playing with it for a couple of hours it's getting easier, learning a couple of tricks. It's going on kind of like plaster/clay. If I keep it moist, and use my finger, it coats really smooth and I'll have less sanding to do. It's actually turning out nicer than I thought.

Caution: Once you start playing with it, that Durham's putty is soOo ADDICTIVE you'll wanna model everything and anything under the sun for as quick and easy it is to work with. zozo-mag
