I have been posting pictures in the 3D Printing thread, but I figured that Grengus C3 should have its own thread here. I've been wanting to learn 3D modeling for printing (not animation) for quite some time now. I've seen several members here create some awesome stuff too! So, I finally decided to give it a shot. I have zero knowledge of 3D modeling and much less about 3D printing. However, I took a leap of faith and purchased a XYZ Davinci 1.0 printer, just to force myself to learn at least a little. Okay, now I had the printer, and I could download stuff from places like Thingiverse and print them out (certain lobster comes to mind). Yeah, it was cool, but not what I really set out to do. I'm old, and it is very difficult for an old dog to learn new tricks. I was about to give it up when I discovered Tinkercad! It is a pretty awesome site for beginners, where I could put shapes together to make things that would print out in my 3D printer! I got myself a cheap caliper from Harbor Tools and that's how I started this project... Soon, this guy will be ready for priming and painting. Until it's finished, I want to keep it as "negatives"... please bear with me. So far it has turned out even better than I imagined. Can't wait to see it all done and next to the SRC Mazinger Z! }D

Looking good. The negative effect makes this figure look like it was carved out of wood.

Bro, you still have the Davinci 1.0, right? That's were I've been printing mine (in separate pieces, of course). I don't want to post any normal pics until it is 100% done and painted. I don't want to spoil it. }D

Looking good. The negative effect makes this figure look like it was carved out of wood. Yeah, that's how my printer makes the parts. Looks exactly like turned wood. They have to be sanded down, and/or acetone vapor bathed, to reduce the wood-look. }D

LOL... and V2 will most likely be better! I have been contemplating putting it up on Shapeways to see how it turns out on their awesome printers. Hell, they can even print it in metal! Unfortunately, it may not be cost efficient, but it would definitely rock to have a metal Grengus C3 figure! }D

""I'm old, and it is very difficult for an old dog to learn new tricks.""
I hear ya there, bro. I feel the same way as well... I've been trying to learn the high-end 3D modeler programs such as Maya, Blender, Poser Pro, and 3D Studio Max so that I could render some top-quality Mazinger-Z animations (Imago/Pixar style). But I just don't have the patience to sit down and learn those programs.
Never mind that. You Grengus-C3 is coming along absolutely Awesome! For your first attempt at this you really nailed down the basics!
TinkerCAD.... I'll have to try that website.... but it uses the webGL protocol. It won't run in my Firefox browser. I'll try it in Internet Explorer. And, I think my graphics card might not handle it as well (my ATI Radeon 9250, 256mb RAM).

I hardly see any difference. What did you do, smooth those said parts?

I had to redo the feet because they were too shallow for the ball joints, and they stuck out too much for my taste. The right forearm was a little thinner than the left one, not very noticeable, but I knew it was. So, it had to be redone as well. Since this is my very first prototype figure, I think it is nearing the stage were it is as good as it's gonna get. Too much more sanding might end up ruining the parts, and replacing them is a beeetch! I'm just gonna do some minor touch-ups and get it ready to prime and paint - when the weather gives me a break. So, think of this figure as an SRC scaled "Revoltech". A simple, solid figure with commercial ball joints. I did learn A LOT making this guy, which was my main goal, and it will be applied in my future figures. }D

Thanks! I think that's why I picked it. Not much detail to worry about, but enough to be a little challenging. Just added its own Base. }D

It places You in the perspective of a toy manufacturer, and then you get to see how a toy is made; from rough drafts and concept art... to the Production phase. And along the way, you'll be presented with design (Structure) and functionality (Articulation) challenges which will motivate you to brainstorm solutions for those challenges. Think of it as taking an Algebra test in order to qualify for the Trigonometry course before moving on to the Physics course. zozo-mag
