Shame on them! They totally copied the design of Bandai. Even a kid knows the exterior design of a toy owns copyright. Will they cause legal disputes ?
I know WEP and Dreamworks are the copyright owners of Voltron, but I don’t know about Playmates, are they also one of the copyright owners? So what the hell is going on? The licensor copied the licensee and reproduce a new toy to make money? How will Bandai feel? Should they feel honoured or angry?
I don’t care about the sales of this Playmates Classic Voltron, I just care about the response of Bandai. If they feel angry and decide to break up the cooperation and we will never see the reissue of soc Golion again.

To be honest, the fact that Voltron 84 is on Netflix, which is literally just six select EPS of dotu, they really had an excuse to go "well we can totally sell this version of Voltron now". So it sounds like it would make a lot of sense to just throw a toy out there and heavily copy the soc so they dont have to do extra work with completely making a new sculpt. Shame on them! They totally copied the design of Bandai. Even a kid knows the exterior design of a toy owns copyright. Will they cause legal disputes ? WEP owns the Voltron IP. Dreamworks bought the company that handled the licensing so they had access to Voltron and cooperated with WEP to make legendary defender. And DW does own legendary defender, it doesn't have a stake in the overall Voltron IP.

Don't jump to conclusions. Its most likely that playmates optioned the design from Bandai and reworked it into a plastic toy. Matchbox used the golion mold back in 84. I'm happy there will be a voltron I can get at retail like I did when I was a kid. I don't expect SOC quality. Its a toy marketed to children. Hopefully Bandai will reissue the GX-71 some day. It is the best version of voltron to date and I don't see any other topping it any time soon. I was hoping to see Bandai do more with the voltron line.

Speaking of doing more with Voltron line, what If Bandai decide to sell SHF Voltron pilots, it will be amazing
So Why doesnt Bandai make SHF super robot pilots? .....nobody knows. Even Bandai doesnt know...its crazy.
There's absolutely positively no logic behind it. Bandai released far FAR lesser known third tier characters in SHF for unknown reason. Its a mystery like dark matter. Even Bandai itself doesnt know why (just like it doesnt know why the Dark General is being released as SHF Zero....yeah i said it, I SAID i said it.)
Can you imagine SHF Koji, SHF Duke Freed, SHF Dr. Hell or SHF Ashura?!? How many do you think those will sell?

I'm getting this for my kid. He's got the Combining Legendary Defender and the Metal Defender. As toys go, they are excellent. 16" makes for an impressive Voltron.
My only concerns with the Classic are:
•The Blazing Sword is only as big as the Red Lion.
•I hope the arms are not as long as the legs.
Regardless,I'm getting this and I hope it's out in time for Christmas.

im honestly more into the robots not their pilots but greengetterguy asked a very good question, why the Dark General is being released as SHF Zero ? and why they dont do a decent version of the pilots ?

The Dark General Bandai rep said, there wasnt enough market for it to justfy the cost accociate with making SOC of him that big.... WHAT!? Its crazy talk. An excuse for whatever the reason.
Also, the rep didn't know who Aoshima was ( there is NO way anyone who is in this business NOT know Aoshima...)...i think he was slighting Aoshima...If that's NOT the case, he shouldnt be representing Bandai.... As far as pilots go, If it doesnt want to do it, sell the license to Sentinel or Max Factory.

Do we know anything else about this new Playmates classic? Is it the same size as SOC? If it's the same size as the Legendary Defender Voltron then I'm not terribly interested. I would be if it's the same size though.

Is there a representative that someone would have to ask about this? Like if there were actual agreements for Playmates to tweak Bandai's sculpt?

Maybe its a collaboration like what Sentinel and Good Smile is doing with Sentinel's Riobot Kaiser...

I'm sure faelon can spell out the particulars; but I'm pretty positive BANDAI didn't get ripped off here. I'm willing to bet a financial arrangement was agreed upon. This Voltron doesn't encroach on the SOC because they are in completely different market segments. The SOC was designed for discriminating adult collectors. The Playmates Classic is 1/3 the cost and it's a kid's toy.
And it looks to be a nice one, at that. And why shouldn't we want a well designed Voltron on the shelves of TRU, Wal-Mart and Target? It's only going to solidify Voltron's legend. It's only going to increase the popularity of this awesome giant robot, and ensure that more toys, shows and movies are produced.
The more kids/dads that pick this up, the greater the longevity of our hobby. 5 years ago, I started buying Voltrons. Then I moved on to GoDaiKins... then SOCs. My last 5 purchases have been EX Gokins and I consider myself to be a serious hobbiest. I don't see myself leaving the world of die-cast robots - EVER. And neither will my 8 year old son.
And it all started with one Voltron.

If you can not see the similarities between the Playmates and the Bandai one, try seeing how different other iterations of it were. Toynami Masterpiece Voltron and SOC Voltron. Credit to Gold: Already you can see the difference. If you compare it to the Playmates one, you will see that the Playmates one bears way more resemblance to the SOC. Then the Mattel one. Again, the different classic Voltrons all had their different styling and proportions (especially with the individual lions), but out of all of them the Playmates classic and SOC ones are the ones that look identical.
