Interested. Will be a big upgrade of my Takara Unicron, and way way bigger. But kind of iffy as a kickstarter project. Will keep an eye on this though.

I think it's just the price that is off putting, I like it but no way can I afford this.

I'm a fan of the new siege line, and coming from a MP collector stand point this thing exhibits coolness factor in spades... having said that I wish I knew more about the hardware that is going into this thing like ratchet joint areas, can it hold its own weight being 19lbs without the support of a stand, and while light feature gimmicks are cool and all but, can the joints on this hold a siege voyager/deluxe class figure with its arms fully extended 90 degrees out without it becoming a floppy mess. The price point on this thing is reaching into MP levels. As a potential supporter of this crowd funded project, I would think these are design considerations they would of thought of in advance and can openly share. I'm also hoping the final product won't have messy battle damage paint apps in the wrong places... seems like this is a hit or miss with this line with its previous releases.

Gorgeous and really iconic. I love TF but I've promised myself never I'd never collect them (there too much figures and I'm already following many things, it's a matter of money and space) but looking this beast makes me regret...

I worry a lot about this “crowdfunding” model. Hasbro is not a small company and it has other means to gauge collector demand and interest, and plenty of money to make big investments. My concern is that they use this crowdfunding thing to charge slightly higher prices (under the guise that, if we don’t pay up, stuff doesn’t get made). How do we know this isn’t a clever way to up price?
It would be more credible to me if Hasbro was clear what the “8,000” orders means. Takara Tomy is also taking orders, and the JP website seems to suggest (but not confirm) those orders are part of the 8,000 total that’s needed. But why isn’t it clear?
It’s an amazing toy, but I wish the transparency of this wasn’t so bogus. It makes me skeptical and as a collector I’m afraid to support it.

There are a lot of other ways to do that (for example like bandai with myth cloth and the TAMASHII WEB EXCLUSIVE MODEL: they take and charge PO and produce only those PO). In the end you will only pay what you are willing to pay (never more). Besides they are a company and want to make money, they won't risk (I wouldn't also) making expensive items that may fail and end up as discounted items (not only you may lose money but also gives a bad reputation to the brand, that happened to bandai America and the PR legacy line). On the other hand you must take into account that they don't earn any money for not producing it (they lost money cause they already spend in engineering and prototypes), so they will end up with a price that is tempting but also allows them to earn enough money. I think accusing a toys company of being shady when we have Facebook, Google and others, it a bit too much. Just enjoy the hobby I think this gives an opportunity to many collectors to get items that we can only dreamt about before. For example bandai America stopped doing carrier zords after titanus, this crowdfunding model allows me to think that a deluxe high end Tor the shuttle zord is possible.

I kind of stand in the middle in the context of this discussion. I believe Hasbro did up the price than they would normally sell for this Unicron. Design is more complex and materials are quite a bit more than the previous Titans, but jumping from $150 to $575 is huge. $350-450 would be a more reasonable range, when it comes to straight cost, material, and sales in line with their previous releases. Hasbro wants to make money afterall, and when they can push it a little, they would. Besides, Hasbro is a big corporate. There are many minds behind this project, with some very passionate and just want to make a great Unicron, while there are others that just look at the money (and usually have the bigger say on the budget). Having said that, $575 wasn't as outrageous as some had claimed, and I am happy to pay that amount for a well executed Unicron as advertized. The sales on Takara Mall website is indeed counted towards the crowdfunding 8000. It was written in Japanese when the listing went up yesterday. They pretty much say the 8000 is world wide count, and if it doesn't make it, they won't be able to fulfill the orders. Unfortunately, Japanese folks need to pay 75600yen, instead of US$575, almost a US$ 100 more.

Thanks for the discussion guys, I really appreciate it. I feel better knowing the 8,000 is being treated as a worldwide number, though I agree that they are charging more than they need to... And I’m not trying to bash the product - it looks amazing. I just think that, as collectors, we should guard against letting companies continue to raise prices on us - even though the reality seems to be that we’re increasingly moving upscale to more and more “premium” releases.

It is tough. Price will get raised. Just look at the SOCs and Bandai premium products (And don't for get the MP-44 Prime). And as collectors, we can vote with our wallets, but it would be even more painful to not get that awesome piece you wanted so long, just because you want to make a 'statement', that in many case won't be heard by the companies, nor cared by the higher execs that only looking for more ways to make money. Healthy discussions is why we are here.
