Just got Zambot. Zambot vs. Dancouga: Big Z by a knockout, a shutout, and a tail pulling. Zambot Rules. JWM Lies! Dancouga wins BIG BIG BIG TIME. ;D Seriously, I really like Dancouga and find Zambot to be one of the worst SoC.... Bill

Dancouga may look bulkier on the shelf, but the transformation of the individual modules is a yawn (except for the Eagle Fighter), and the overall combination of modules is likewise uninspiring. Frankly, Big D. is a glorified Transformer. (ducks from the rage of TF fans) Zambot's individual modules are more intricate, and the combining is right in synch with Combattler, Dangard, Voltes, and the rest of the old school super robots. My initial reaction to Dancouga was disappointment, but the toy grew on me over time. Still, for me it's just ok: an overall grade of B-/C+. I give Zambot straight A's across the board. So is this going to end up like the Great Taste/Less Filling conflict? Are we approaching a Jets vs. Sharks type of rumble? Will Robot Japan be divided into Zambot, and Dancouga camps? Can you really trust someone who prefers combining critters to transforming SUPER ROBOTS? Stay tuned, space brothers. JWM

I love them both!
Individual Greatness divides people.
What would be of Magic Johnson without a Larry Bird? Who is better soccer player Pele or Maradona?
Lets cherish the fact that they are both great, and that jus like in the Magic vs Bird rivalry, there will lways be somebody better ie, Michael Jordan. In this case that would be GRENDIZER!!!!!!!!! ;D (Ready to be flamed)

Update...
I decided to get GX-13 first since I found a good deal and because it is the older of the two. I'll get GX-23 within the next few months.
I'm always impressed by the accuracy of the painting on the SOC line. The colors are different than the traditional shogun warrior colors, and look very good. The individual transformations are relatively simple, but still very impressive. The proportions of the final combination and the posablility/articulation are also very good (for a gattai). There is also a good amount of "chogokin" for a robot of this type.
My ONLY gripe with Dancouga is the head/neck piece. I was really disappointed in how that was executed. I don't like the idea of having to add parts and disassemble limbs to get an attachment. Is there a better way to do this or do I have to keep removing the arms for the transformation?
I'm sure these comments have been made before, but they are worth repeating for other people that are in the same predicament I was in.
Finally, I think (based on pics) that the Zambot transformation is better executed. I really like the way they did the heads. I'll keep you all posted on this.
My wallet keeps shrinking....

Actually Zambot requires more parts added and subtracted in the transformation process then the Dancouga does. And I agree with your complaint...despite that, Dancouga rules. Zambot is great too, but it is one of my least favorite SoCs.

I don't even use that extra piece for Dancouga's head, it's only there if you want him to look up or swivel his head. Besides I don't have that many figures that Dancouga has to look up too anyway.

I played with Dancouga again, and really like him. His colors are very nice. All of the plastics have a metallic look to them.
I found a way to set the head without the use of the neck piece. You have to align the arms down and insert them into the main body. You can't move the head much, but it seems to stay in place better, and you won't have to disassemble the eagle each time.
I'm surprised about what you're saying about Zambot. Based on the pics, it looked like you could do the transformations without adding/removing pieces. It may look better with different pieces, but not necessary.
I'm happy that toy companies (aoshima, bandai, takara, etc) make these high quality items. There is some good engineering and design in them.

Last night I was fooling around with my Dancouga and trying to get him in all the great poses I've seen him in. This was actually the first time I really played with him and was surprised about the durability and poseability of this toy. That's when I decided that although I love Zambot's style and look, the lack of any kind of real leg movement will put him behind Dancouga in my book.

Yet another hapless victim deceived by the Cornball King of Combining Critters. So very sad... I'm gonna have to get you guys into a twelve-step group or something. But all goofing aside- has anyone been able to get the big gun mounted on the Dan? I have tried several times to get the two pins on the gun handle mounted into the two holes on the side of the torso, and I 've never been able to get it to fit. JWM
