I'm stoked, my Legos on Ebay cleared over $600! So I need to rename the thread, "Thoughts on starting a collection with $600." Hopefully there will be no deadbeats.

Jryu,
I actually like J-Hobby a lot! Sure, his hours are more a rough guide as to when he's open (I've been there an hour after he's supposed to be open and he's still closed), but it's a good place for a beginner collector such as I to start. Though his selection is slim, the prices are right. And as I didn't have any SOCs when I started, everything in the store is interesting to me. I got both EVAs GX-21 and 22 for $187 CDN total (that's $140 US to our other friends reading).
Ultra Action is a great place, the owner Cygnie is a great guy, but J-Hobby is cheaper. Also, harder to haggle w/ Cygnie as there's always at least 5 other people in the store. I'm more comfortable making a deal when it's one on one. I know the store in Steveston you mention, I think it's Steve's Collectibles, or something like that. I used to go there when I was collecting Hot Wheels. There's also a place directly across from Pacific Plaza on the ground floor. Guy who works there is a JERK. But he had the Kado Senshi Gundam (the oldie red one with the green visor) going for $33 CDN. I wasn't sure if that's a good deal, so held off from buying (besides, he was a REAL jerk). The guy also had Panda Z, Clear Edition MMM Gundam, and GX-06m there too... for astronomically unbelievable prices.
Keep me in the loop if you see any cool stuff!

Cedar,
Yeah, I pretty much gave up on J-Hobby when everytime I asked him about a kit he just shook his head "no" if he didn't have it in stock without asking me if I wanted to order it or offer up any more information on how to get it. He was always eating something when I was in there or looking bored out of his mind. I guess I got the wrong impression but I may have to go back and give it another shot.
I agree, Cygnie at Ultra Action is a great guy but there are always tons of people in that tiny little shop and so it's hard to talk to him. However, he seems to have one of the most diverse collection of offerings of any store in the area ranging from vintage DX to the latest releases. The key to getting a great deal from Cyg is to preorder. He told me that his method was to discount the toys as a preorder and then as time goes by, he'll raise the price shortly after release because he knows that he's one of the few places that locals can get the stuff.
I know the kid you're talking about that has that shop across the street I think. His place is this messy shop that specializes more in video games and he's got that Fort Max in the window? Is that the one? If so, he wasn't that jerky to me but I found him annoying for some reason. The funny thing is, I went to Cyg's the week after I met that kid and he was in there trying to reserve Zambot and a few other kits.
Seeing as how we've sorta hijacked this thread and made it about Vancouver toy hunting, maybe I'll start another thread specifically about this since Vancouver seems to be one of the better cities to find this stuff in North America. Taking it a step further, maybe it would be cool to have a board dedicated to posting about various cities around the world where we can post our experiences with local stores, places with good deals, etc. I think it'd be especially beneficial for those of us who try to hunt while we're traveling to unfamilar cities for fun or work.
Admin/Mods/Fellow members, do you think this would be helpful to have?

I just posted for some advice in the San Fransisco area. It would be helpful for those who are traveling too. Its ok to admit that taking a vaction has extra frindge bennifits if there is a shop near by I think the thread would be helpful. Maybe something like; Local Shops That Feed Our Addiction --------Vancouver Area, Canada --------Bay Area, USA --------Oregon, USA --------so on and so forth Each thread could be a list or review on different shops in the subjects area. Maybe even current inventories.

I agree, I'd love for a Cities store review section. I could review all the Bay Area stores...

Well I wasn't going to post what I ordered until I actually had the toys in hand, but I'll hope for the best and lay to rest my nightmares about pirates hijacking my SoC shipment. I did upgrade my shipping package at Leo's to the " Navy Seals Special Forces Escort Package", best $10,000,000 I ever spent. Anyways I ordered the following: GX-11 Dianan A $25 GX-12 Venus A $40 Got both of these on sale at Imagine Anime. I saw Diana for $25 so I went ahead and got both. GX-20 Getter Poseidon $79.99 Picked him up at TwinMoonsAnime. He seems to be a hard one to track down along with Liger. Along with the order I got the crystal bases for all 3 Getters starting my treck to collect the old school Getter team. GX-18 Getter Dragon $48 GX-13 Dancouga $158.72 Got these at Leo's Toy Shop. $47.54 for shipping the 2. 5-10 day wait The best price I can find on Getter Liger is $90 at Toywave. I'll probably order him next to complete the set. After that it will either be GX-04 GX-04B or GX-04S depending on how much I clear and how cheap I can find them. I'm still waiting on one deadbeat to contact me. He ordered $150 from me and hasn't even contacted me yet. I think my Poseidon will arive tomorrow. I have a feeling I'll be glued to the window waiting for the sight of a brown truck screeching to a hault in front of my house. I hope the Navy Seal team is ok. Last contact with them it was SNAFU and the ETA was TBA. I just hope they BYOB.

I got home yesterday and received a yellow note from USPS: Failed Delivery. I could wait until tomorrow, or go cross-town to the PO right now, and get my package. Right now. I'm either getting wise, or maybe just old because I didn't curse the traffic that stood between me and my GX06 Getter Team. Rather, I savored each maddening delay. (even that nervy damn firetruck driver who caused me wait through half of a green light.) The suspense was intoxicating. Got the box. Got it home. Got to work. I even took a break and had a sandwich for dinner.Wife came home to find me with boxes all over, new Getters on the desk, lights, camera, a new bunch of pictures on the monitor... So much for stealth. But the two sets of Getters: ;D ;D And I still haven't opened the Gt 07 mini Getter2 yet. JWM
