On Friday or Saturday, hopefully the latest Monday, I'll have ~$350 to play with. I was thinking...
SOC GX-13 Dancouga SOC GX-18 Dragun Mazinkaiser (Black Wing Version)
I think I want to eventually get GX-19 and GX-20 also. So that would be another way to go. Get all the Getters? I did want a big Chogokin to... Another way to go is to get 1 nice one like GX-04S Grendizer... This purchase will be my 1st neo Chogokin since the days of Godaikin. Just thought I'd throw that out there and ask for some input.

I have just about all the regular SOC's. If I were you I get the Grendizer as he is expensive and getting harder to find. Then I'd get Mazinkaiser, then Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger, and then Boss Borot, and the 4 girls, and on and on and on.. I is an addictive hobby, you will eventually have em all ;D

Hmmm, if I had $350 and I was starting a robot collection, I'd get the best bang-for-the-buck robots out there. I know this is the wrong forum, but I'd buy: Masterpiece Prime Smokescreen Sideswipe Hound Silverstreak Dead End All are from the Binaltech line. These are awesome quality, and wonderful designs. The price can't be beat. I love my SoC collection, but I think these Transformers are a better value. SoC robots are probably better quality (slightly), and may hold more nostalgic memories for some. Also, 1/48 Scale Yamato Valkyries are worth a look as well, but these are fairly pricey. If you want to stick to SoC only, I'd go with Dancouga first, and probably Great Mazinger, maybe the Getter Trio....hmmm that probably more like $450...Hell I don't know! With time you can get 'em all and be a crazed maniac like some of us are here. Anyway, just my crazy advice.... Bill

I wanted to stay within the lines of SoC. I would venture out for the Mazinkaiser Black Wing just for the badass factor. As for GX-04S, how does it display? Does it come with a stand that would hold all the pieces? Extra arms, weapons, and ships?

The GX-04 display is probably the best in the series. All the parts fit and it lifts the robot pretty high up. A really nice design.
Though I still think Dancouga is the most impressive/imposing SoC to date.

If you read one of my previous posts you'd know that I'd go for the GX-04 too. It displays fantastic and looks bad-@$$ when fully assembled. The stand is a good 2 and a half inches high because it has room for the saucer ship underneath. Warning though, if you get the GX-04S (or the GX-04X later), the display changes a bit. The drill- and marine "spazer" add-ons come with their own display stand that can be connected to the top of the original stand. But doing that means you won't have room for old Grendizer himself on the stand anymore... The only way to display him then is to have him inside his saucer. Oh - and don't forget, Grenzider isn't that much bigger than the other Mazinger types in the SoC line. If you're going for size, I'd have to agree with your first picks - go for Dancouger or Mazinkaiser.

For $350.00, I would get a GX-04 and a GX-18. You can always get GX-04X later, plus Grendizer can actually stand on his base without the extra Spazers. But if your planning on collecting the whole SOC line (which will happen no matter what) then I would get GX-04S and GX-07.

I say GX04S as well but if you can find it, get the PX01 and PX01X Hover Pileder and Mazinger Head pieces also. Both display awesomely and more importantly to me, represent that era's design aesthetic quite succinctly. GX13/R is a great piece, no doubt and it *is* huge, imposing and chogolicious. However, the design is much more modern than the others and is reminiscent of the Transformers design sensibility. If you're going for size though, this one is def. the one to get. GX18,19, 20 are also awesome to display as a set. To me, their shelf presence together and posed is just as impressive as Dancougar. Be forewarned tho...once you get your first set of SOC, there's no turning back. Not that it's a bad thing mind you... j*ryu

Jryu, you're based in Vancouver, BC too, you ever see an GX-04 in any of the local stores? It's difficult for me to hit the shops at the Crystal Mall as I have to stay with the wife and new baby. Hate to hafta buy it on eBay what with the astronomical shipping charges...

I doubt you'll find GX-04 at any stores anymore. Definitely not here in the Bay Area. Maybe its different up there though.
G'luck!

Lol, well I won't be based in Vancouver until snowboarding season starts, prolly around late November but trust me, I wish I was there right now. I'm in Raleigh, NC for the majority of the year since my company is based here. I may be back there third week of August though for business and I'm going to try my hardest to go hunting for some vintage DX. But the last time I was there, which was a couple of months ago, there weren't any GX04's at any of the shops. I saw a GX06, GX06M, GX18, GX19, GX20 and the Evas at Crystal. At Ultra Action, they had GX13 and GX08 and they had GX07 until I bought it this last February. Sorry bro...I'll ask my friends there to go look around for you. Where are you at in Van? j*ryu Jryu, you're based in Vancouver, BC too, you ever see an GX-04 in any of the local stores? I'm living in Richmond. Ultra Action has gotten another new GX-07, retailing at $88 (CDN). And they've still got Dancouga GX-13, but too expensive, $400 CDN. Thanks for putting the word out! I'd like to get my hands on a new GX-04, preferably the GX-04s... sigh.
I saw a Zambot GX-23 at J-Hobby, $300 CDN, no haggling!

You know, despite the fact that Van has more stores that sell chogokin/japanese toys, I tend to find that the prices are also fairly high in general. That GX07 at CDN 88 isn't that bad(especially if you pay cash) but the rest of the prices are kinda crappy. It's about time that J-Hobby got some new stuff in. What's up with his weird hours anyways...half the time I go he's either closed or hasn't even opened for the day. There used to be a couple of shops at the old Aberdeen mall that carried toys but I'm not sure if they've moved back in since they remodeled. I doubt they will though since it seems to be filling up with more upper scale stores compared to what they had before. You know, you may want to try to hit that vintage toy store in Steveston Village that sells TF's, figures, etc and see if the have anything of interest. I picked up a Microman Eagle Ken from them for $4 CDN, complete cause they had no idea what it was, they got it as part of a lot. I can't remember the name off the top of my head but that area isn't too big in the first place. I know with your wife and kid it's hard to get out to Burnaby but I was pretty suprised at the offerings at Crystal. There are at least 4-5 shops there that carry the stuff we're into. If you can make it out there, by all means go. I checked on YJ also for your GX04/S and they're even going pretty high over there. I know that YJ bidders are often inflating the price but at this point, it seems like it'd be still cheapest and easiest to win one off ebay. Or, if you could find a cheap GX23 over there, you could trade it to ptjoe who has a GX04 he wants to swap. What other places have you checked or that you know of? I usually just check Ultra Action, Crystal, occasionally J-Hobby and that's about it. j*ryu I'm living in Richmond. Ultra Action has gotten another new GX-07, retailing at $88 (CDN). I don't know how much GX-04S is going for on Ebay, but www.toy-wave.com has one for $299.99. They also have alot of SOC's at good prices, I saw a GX-06M going for $100.00.

No matter which SOC's you start with, you're going to get hooked very badly. (Which is not a bad thing.) My only recommendation is to avoid buying a partial set. That is, if you're going for the Getters get all three: GX 18, 19, and 20, and/or the GX06. Same with the Mazinger girls, or the Evangelions. Having partial sets induces collectors' frenzy which can keep you up nights and spoil your mental health. You don't want to end up wandering hollow-eyed through cyber space muttering incoherently about your unrequited desire for Venus A, or your desperate longing for a mini-Combattler. Don't sweat high prices for hard-to-get stuff. Once you've got the toy you won't regret having paid the price. Have fun! JWM

with 350$ on hand, on my own opinion, i think you should get:
GX-18 GX-19 GX-20 GX-21 GX-22
these sets are fairly new with a reasonable price, one of the most important point is, most of them are brand new instead of the used/displayed old ones.
