Thought I'd start a thread about some problem area's about SOC's and the like so members here can keep an eye on things.
So I guess I'll get started, we all know about the notorious tarnishing of Dancouga's sword and MF's GGGG but I noticed a couple more "defects" when I was moving my collection to a spare room.
First off the treads on my GX-06 Getter 3 were pretty much pooched. They were cracked and splitting with one tread completely split in half. I'm not sure what the cause is but I'm assuming it's from the rubber drying out and the fact that the treads weren't rotated. I'll check my GX-06M to see if the same thing is happening.
Second the round spikey "wheels" that go on both sides of GX-05 Daiku Maryu's knees had cracks in them. Again I'm not sure what the cause is perhaps the plastic had dried out and cracked due to shrinkage but I was surprised because those parts have very little stress put on them.
I'll check my collection again to see if I can see anything else start to deteriorate.

Mine: MF GGGG - Broken at both hips and both arms. Feet are badly cracked.
GX-13 Dancouga - Sword tarnish. The part of the eagle's wing that folds in to form Dancouga's head is broken at the hinge. Seems like the joint dried up cos it hasn't been moved for a long time and it broke when I did my video review. Not a big issue as it still stays in place pretty well.
GX-28 - The groin area that holds the lower waist pieces together broke. Apparently transforming it too much, pulling the legs in and out, causes some stress to the groin area. Fixed with super glue.
CMS GGGG - Gaigar's left knee broke as the joint is subject to a lot of stress but is made with plastic. The problem is solved in the revised version of GGGG.
Aoshima Devil Wing Getter - Both weapons are rusting.
GX-01 - Right thigh is showing signs of cracking.

Good for you Chen, for starting this thread! What I am about to list here are damages that probably resulted from my own neglect for letting dust gather on them and keeping them in a relatively hot room. I just recently moved house, and I had time to clean my small collection, which is covered in thick dust. There are several things I noticed that I did not remember seeing the last time I cleaned them (about 6 - 8 months ago ) Some of my robots show paint blistering in their metal parts. All manufacturers are affected, whether Aoshima, CMS, or Bandai. While most have not developed cracking paintjob, when I was wiping one of the shoulders of the Aoshima Mazinkaiser with a damp soft cloth, the paint chipped away! Don't know whether this is entirely my fault, but I've read somewhere that Aoshima products paint are notorious for chipping. So far, I don't have any problems with any gokins having rubber treads. All are intact (so far), however, if damages occur, do you think there are places that can provide replacement? Additionally, there are noticeable yellowing on the white painted metal parts of CMS' Patlabor. The painted part yellows faster than the plastic parts that are molded in white. Strange huh? Yellowing has also occur on the light grey parts of SOC Dancouga. And yes... paint eaten away by contact with vinyl capes. Happened to an aoshima getter 1, but strangely, does not happen to aoshima daishogun. I guess the flat paint used on the getter 1 is more prone than the metallic paint on daishogun... While it did not actually happen to a gokin, it still may happen to them. The PVC V-fin and antenna on the DX-MSIA GP-01Fb just disintegrated. They broke apart into small pieces while I was cleaning them with a brush! A lot of the gokins has small parts made of PVC as well, so I fear for their fates! My theory is that heat just dried the PVC making them lose flexibility - and small stress now breaks them, where they were able to bend before And lastly - the chrome plastic parts on SOC Raideen's accessories apparently tarnishes easily. Didn't see this happening on SOC Dygenguar's chromed zankatou yet tho. Final note on stupidity: I stacked my SOC boxes on the floor of a second floor room which I thought was dry. Apparently I was wrong. When I retrieved the boxes, three of them managed to stick to the floor, damaging the box faces that lays on the floor.

Chen, YOU are godhead. Thanks for this thread! It's amazing how we're so entertained and dazzled by our collections yet we never stop for a brief moment to examine our specimens and make sure they're intact. Climate changes, home environments, drunken spouses, violent pre-school kids, rampaging house-pets, even pet rocks... ALL may have some affect on our collections from time to time... It wouldn't hurt to take a closer look at Each one ( Yes, those of you with 100-plus and 200-plus SOCs. LOL) to make sure everything's safe-n-sound. zozo-Magengar

I believe that I only have 3 SOCs with problems:
- Mazinger hanger elevator ceased to function - GX-02R loose shoulder joint - GX-03 has horrible connection capability (had the problem since day 1)
I feel fortunate that I don't have a lot of issues.

The treads are starting to crack and split on my GX-06M Getter 3 too. I always thought that you should keep your collection in a dry humidity free room but is there a chance that you can have a room to dry? I don't know what to do, it really doesn't bother me because I'll just glue or try and fix it but I know once they start to dry and crack there pretty much gone. I also found yellowing on my GX-04 Double Spazer too, but that's expected since it is a almost 10+ year old toy. Still I'm not complaining no toy is perfect and I don't ever plan on selling my collection.

Anyone have problems with Zambo Ace's legs? I bought mine used from a fellow forum member, and the legs were cracked off.

i will have to check my GX-06 Getter 3's treads as well the rest of the SOC figures i got to see if there is any problem with them. I just dashed to check the Getter's threads, which haven't been moved in ages. luckily no splitting but when I moved them they were crackling pretty bad at first but ran smoothly after a couple of turns. Do you guys think moving them once in a while would solve the problem or maybe they'd need additional lubrication? I'd hate to have them split.

The GX-56's inner crotch has cracked on at least 3 figures in the same exact spot. POssibly a tressed area, although I have a theory that positioning the tail a certain way relieves the stress on that part..until now just a theory because I only have one... and its broken The red Aoshima Legioss...the entire figure is a huge fail..way too many defects to list... Utter disgust for that figure. GX-06, treads fell apart when I pulled it out of the box Xabungle GX-28 NEVER EVER transformed mine and one day took it out of display case and went to move arm and shoulder desintegrated. Pain in the arse to fix but its holding.. Oh how could I forget, the CM's ATM-FX1 Blue Calamity Dog Zerberus VR-Maxima..huge nice figure with HORRIBLE shoulder design. Really paper thin-walled shoulder cylinders wrapped around a stiff ratcheting joint. Recipe for disaster. Easiest way to turn arm is to pull out arm and insert it back in the position you want. Do not try and ratchet. GX-61 Destroyer X It fell apart and it turned out that it was just a bunch of SOC parts glued together to look like a robot.

Yeah it's a love/hate thing with rubber treads, sure they add a tactile feel and look good but there destined to dry and crack no matter what. Same with articulated hands, look nice but sooner or later they end up loose or so stiff that to move them you end up breaking them.
I should also add that the hands on my Voltes are so loose I've been tempted to just crazy glue them in place just so it can old it's sword at a decent angle. That figure gives new meaning to the phrase "limp wristed".

LOL at GX-61 As to GX-06, a few of you mentioned the tracks. Are all of you keeping these in the box? If you guys read the vintage thread (hehe), you'd see that rubber reacts with styrofoam. See here: robotjapan.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Popychogokin&action=display&thread=17870So maybe its the storage in the box that is accelerating the disintegration of the treads. My GX-06 is on display, and I have no problems whatsoever with them.

Nah mine have been on display since I got them, I think it's just different conditions that varies from region to region that may or may not cause cracking. I did have my collection in a room that got super cold in winter plus extremely dry so after how many years of going through that cycle I just think it caused it to crack. Plus I pretty much haven't touched that figure in over five years so maybe the lack of keeping the tracks rotating around the wheels might have added something. Kinda like car tires on old junkers that haven't moved in ages and as soon as they do start to fall apart.

Rubber reacting with styrofoam..... Darn, I always forget that! And I still have some of my GX-02R's accessories inside its box.
Well, tonight after I get home from work I will pull everything out of 02R's box and have them displayed with him.

So I'm curious, knowing that there are many deficiencies in quality, and seeing that nothing lasts forever, does it affect your approach to this hobby? Dropping $100 to $300 on items that likely won't hold up - does that give you pause at all, some measure of hesitation when buying the next release?
Too much doom and gloom on my part?

It's sure food for thought...........but then once I see a new release of my childhood heroes, all rational reasoning takes a dive out of the highest floor....and there goes another $300!! ;D Never knew about that styro/rubber reaction......damn and I even have my Fewture Getter 3 displayed on a styro display!!!! Off to rethink my display choices!!
