So I'm curious, knowing that there are many deficiencies in quality, and seeing that nothing lasts forever, does it affect your approach to this hobby? Dropping $100 to $300 on items that likely won't hold up - does that give you pause at all, some measure of hesitation when buying the next release? Too much doom and gloom on my part? Not really for me since I buy toys for emotional investment and not financial. Sure it pisses me off when a figure get's broken but compared to figures that are still perfect it's a very small percentage (for SOC's that is). We all know that in 20+ years these things will be pretty much yellowed, cracked pieces of plastic and diecast but for me I will still love and enjoy them the same. I'll just be super careful playing with them ;D

The "sliding" mecanism of Zambot Ace legs (not the limited, the one included with GX-23) allready cracked. It's a little plastic part which take the "shock" when you pull up the legs (from jet to robot mode). Now one leg is loose... I keep my Zambot 3 in Robot mode (and I bought I second ex + a GX-23A Zambot Ace).

Yeah it's a love/hate thing with rubber treads, sure they add a tactile feel and look good but there destined to dry and crack no matter what. Same with articulated hands, look nice but sooner or later they end up loose or so stiff that to move them you end up breaking them. I should also add that the hands on my Voltes are so loose I've been tempted to just crazy glue them in place just so it can old it's sword at a decent angle. That figure gives new meaning to the phrase "limp wristed". My GX-31 had that problem as well, even though it's only equipped with the standard sword (not the metal one). It's sold after the incident that cracked the chest paint tho.

@ Skizz... Oh man, I choked on my coffee reading your line there. Good one! LMAOTF!!! ;D -------------------- The primary reason I started collecting in this hobby is to have toy versions of my favorite Japanese robot characters (ie Mazinger and Raideen). When I was a kid I had just two or three robot toys which didn't last long in my possession (they either got stolen, lost, or broken). So, back then That was my Life Without. Now at age 45, and capable of affording these cool toys whenever I Want (and Can), I want to re-live those childhood memories. Since I joined RJ this forum has solidly justified my experience in this hobby-- to a point that I even take personal offense when outsiders look at my hauls and disrespect me by calling them "toys". It's ok for US here to call our hauls Toys because we know what we mean by that. But Out THERE in the "real world" someone calling my hauls "Toys" is beggin to get Dropped Without A Trace. I do care about how much money I spend on any specimen in this hobby... but if it is something I really Want, then money cannot stop me from having something that I will truly enjoy. My Mazinger specimens are perfect examples of this. I don't just buy them to "collect" them... I love them and I want to physically enjoy them besides displaying them as mere "gallery pieces". KingboyD hit the nail on the head with his question. Is all of this Worth it? That depends on the individual folks in this hobby and their own degree of passion for this experience. The least one can say is that he/she has lived this and enjoyed every minute of it. ...furthermore, I realize good things don't last forever; even toys; even These "toys". But they'll be something I'll cherish for a very long time before they out-live me. And when I finally leave this world, I can then truly say I've had a Badassiest Badass Childhood. ;D zozo-Mag So I'm curious, knowing that there are many deficiencies in quality, and seeing that nothing lasts forever, does it affect your approach to this hobby? Dropping $100 to $300 on items that likely won't hold up - does that give you pause at all, some measure of hesitation when buying the next release? Too much doom and gloom on my part? It's sure food for thought........... but then once I see a new release of my childhood heroes, all rational reasoning takes a dive out of the highest floor.... and there goes another $300!! ;D

The darndest thing happened to me yesterday. I haven't been touching my collection for a while, maybe 5 - 6 months, and I had them put away inside this closed bookshelf. Yesterday, I checked on them. Being in the front row, Grendizer (GX-04S 2006 reissue version) naturally got picked up first. When I lifted it up, one of the legs, the left one stayed on the rack. Upon closer examination, I noticed that the lower knee joint block (the parts where you insert the joint pin) has sheared clean-off, for no apparent reason, since the figure just sits there for the last few months. The other knee had no obvious problem, although I didn't do more detailed inspection. Ratchet still works fine. I tried to repair the damages using steel epoxy, but it won't stick, since there's not much surface to adhere the epoxy, and I don't think using super glue would work either, since that particular part has to handle the stress from the pin and the spring-loaded ratchets. Now I got a one legged Grendizer

The other time was when I picked up my SOC Xabungle and before I went to move the arm, it came right off. Plastic cracked right in two. I had never even transformed it.

That sounds too weird! Even in extremely hot and humid climates, SOCs shouldn't deteriorate so much. Anyway, I'm happy I have my stuff on the West Coast! ;D

I know! SOC's are not supposed to be products that self destruct like certain notorious toynami alpha figure hands

EAST COAST BABY!! No probs! My only real prob out off the Box was New Getter Robo from Aoshima, the heels of the feet were BOTh popped off since the tiny screws inside cant support the industrail strength spring inside the feet,TERRIBLY made, had to replace all 4 srcrews with stronger ones and rertap the NON TAPPED screw hole cylinders,JUNK! Ive seen several now with this problem.Aoshima make nice toys, but ALL their joints BLOW!From the God awful Mazinkaiser elbows to the Getter feet prob.I do like their designs and heft...I only own 4 Aoshimas,Mazinkaiser,Ankoku Daishogun,Black Neo Getter and New Getter, and they all look great, but also they never seem to stand PERFECTLY straight either,as in one shoulder seems higher,The way the legs sit in the hips/groin is a terrible way,one side always seems to stick out more lending to slightly sloped shoulders and stance. But theWorst is the Max factory Mazinkaiser the legs into the hips on 3 Ive seen always are uneven so one side of the leg meeting the hip is out more, this causes a sloping stance to one side, also see this on Aoshimas too.Im being picky here, and the degree is nominal, but Never saw this on any SOC or CMS for that matter.

I have a whole bunch of Aoshimas and never ever experienced anything of the sorts with them. The only issue I had was with two Anime-Export exclusives: The Black Neo Getter and the Full Mantle Getter 1. The Black Neo Getter's forearms were loose inside the styrofoam box, and the blades being made out of metal, put several scratches on the figure. The Full Mantle Getter 1 has a weathered look, but it came with a paint chip in one of the legs. Other than that, I've had no problems whatsoever with my Aoshimas. I wonder if R-J member Tsurugi has had any problems with his Aoshimas too, since he owns ALL of them in like TRIPLICATE... and then some! ;D robotjapan.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=SOC&thread=15117&page=1robotjapan.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=SOC&action=display&thread=14875&page=2}D

One of the "face flaps" on my black Reideen SOC broke off the hinged part. I glued it back with 2 part epoxy and it's solid as a rock now, opens and closes like before. I also finally found GX-34 Gunbuster, it's perfect except fo a tiny paint chip on the yellow strip of the chest. Does anyone have already had this happen? I'm trying to decide what paint type/brand/shade I should use to fix, any help on this matter would be appreciated Oh, and I should add that it's certainly the best robot figure I've ever held... GUNBUSTER!!! FINALLY!!!

Not much can be done about these issues. The First SOCs are quickly becoming the new "vintage" figures. Hopefully someone will start making repro-parts for them. }D
