Okay, so I tried watching the Voltes V series again. Each time that I do, I get disappointed. Bad plot, horrible dialogue, not so good animation, etc.... In short, these shows I own (Mazinger, Daimos, etc...) do not live up to my childhood memories. I know, that is impossible to recreate but some TV shows and movies do hold up in time. On the other hand, the SOCs retain and in many ways, enhance my love for these series. Do you guys feel the same?

Whatever I watched and liked at one time,I still like today. My tastes never change.I just see more things to add to my tastes. SOCs and their shows are integral to each other, but are also very different entities. But also true is if I hate an actor I probably wont see the movie, not so with robots, their design can stand alone, apart from the animes,as its the pilot that does the "acting" in the animes. I do although have to like a robot design to want to see the anime.I dislike most modern design so i wont give the shows a chance, same with modern comedy.

In my case, I only get the figure if I've seen the anime. For example, when the Konami Impact Gurren Lagann went on pre-order initially, I dismissed it as a crap robot, a modern copycat of Gaiking.I've seen some clips of the show, and did not like what they offered. It wasn't until I watched the entire show years later that I realized it was an awesome anime. Of course, that made me have to have the now very expensive figure - which I did pay a lot for.
So, basically, to me it does not matter how cool a figure may look. If it doesn't have a show/anime, or if I don't know it does, I will just not get it.
As far as the old shows, yeah, they usually just put me to sleep now. The only classic anime I can watch with the same enthusiasm as the first time I watched it, is the OVA "Mazinger Z vs Ankoku Daishogun". Everything else is just a sleeping remedy for me.

In recent years I've found myself enjoying classic Anime from the 70's-80's a lot more than the recent stuff they put out. Every now and then we might get a Gem like GL but they are far and few. I loved Voltes V and it made me purchase my first SOC which I bet you can't guess what it was.

Oh Jeeg,Gakeen,Tekkaman and the several Ippatsuman (Gyakuten-Oh,Sankahn-OhCalendarman{done by SUPER art studio Tatsunoku that brought us Casshern,Gatchaman,Polymar etc}) shows ive seen are STILL the best looking anime for me,strange, funky and beautifully done.Pastel backgrounds, exotic villains etc.Far from boring me,even if some 70s/80s shows are formulaic, its not the story, its the cool colorful art that makes good anime for me.
Ill watch a movie if i want deep storyline.Lets face it,Im not attracted to anime for intellectual plotline and character development. Its for the COOL factor. Most new anime is just the opposite, adult, dry, dark washed out art, blecch, sorry not for me,these are cartoons.I do like SKL alot though,as far as modern goes.
You guys should try TimeBokan a great anime, full of strange comedy, cool insect mechs etc,you can see alot of it in English too if you look hard on Youtube or order it.There are 8 series of the Time Bokan shows. The original is teh best though.Just for something fresh here is first episode fansubbed, this is a case of buying the toys first from CMs and later watching the show.. if you want see teh 90 min english movie TimeFighters go here

I understand your feeling I was trying to watch Voltron couple of months ago I just couldn't stand it after the 10th episode then I found a fan sub for the original and it was a totally different show but still I got bored a little and didnt find time to complete it
The last mecha I watched was Daimos and it was the best ive watched so far the story the plot and this robot who play karate, what got me bad is the support story the love between Kazuya and Ericka with the main war story I could easily watch it again and enjoy it
The thing with Mazinger Z it’s really hard to find a decent copy of the show either horrible sub or horrible quality but for me it’s still watchable and enjoyable
To be honest old stuff are still kicking way better than the new stuff by light years most of the new shows now and excuse me focuses on nudity with a little plot and that’s not working for me
Im planning to watch Voltes V because I never watch it before and I found a super quality for the show with decent subs, I want to see how different he is from Combattler V

In short, these shows I own (Mazinger, Daimos, etc...) do not live up to my childhood memories. I'd say the "childhood memories" part is the problem then. I had never seen any of these shows as a kid and I've enjoyed them tremondously as an adult, and I've absolutely no idea why you would think Voltes V has a bad plot. At least, unlike Combattler V, it actually HAS one. Voltes isn't one of my favourites, but I certainly think it's far better than what you give it credit for. You didn't try to marathon it, did you?

I prefer old robot shows to the new ones, overall. Recent mecha animes have too much fanservice and not enough robots, I can't believe the Japanese audience accepts this... they fell from the pedestal...
Also, too much CGI in modern robot cartoons. What now? Have you forgotten how to draw, sir?

Things were simplier back then. Gold

I still get the same childhood happy memories/feelings when I watch Star Wars and Indiana Jones. However, I don't collect those toys. On the other hand, I'm obsessed with SOCs but I am not crazy about their associated animated series. But hey, I still love the Voltes V opening and end credit themes. I can still sing them, in Japanese

I love many of the classic super-robot and human hero anime shows of the '70s right on up to Golion. And then fast-forward to Mazinkaiser and Mazinkaiser SKL. If the pace and the plot moves fast, I'm all for it.
As far as artwork in an anime show is concerned, I love Tatsunoko Studio's products such as Go Mach Go and Gatchaman... Tatsunoko has the best consistent anime artwork, all hands down. I would gladly buy their SOCs if possible.
Second to that is Tohokushinsha Productions/Asahi TV for their Yuusha Raideen show, Kickass. They all have very nice artwork that looks consistent from start to finish of their anime shows. And if you look closely at some of the Opening/Closing themes between Raideen, Voltes V, and Combattler V you'll see the close resemblance in the artwork... all by Asahi TV. Let me have some of their SOCs as well.
Wish I could say the same for the Mazinger-Z series... however, the Mazinger OVAs really showed lots of improvement in the artwork.
The only time I've seen some really crisp top-notch artwork for Mazinger-Z was in a pack of Mazinger-Z trading cards made by Toei... scenes from the episodes on the front of the cards, and brief descriptions of each episode scene (in Spanish) on the back of each trading card.
Funny thing, though: I've seen the trading cards BEFORE ever seeing the Mazinger-Z series. So, you can bet I was very disappointed to see that the artwork in the TV anime show was nothing good compared to what I saw on the trading cards. Nonetheless, I still love Mazinger-Z because that robot made a strong impression on me the same way Gigantor did while I was in kindergarten. So, yes, I certainly want more Mazinger-Z toys.
I wouldn't mind collecting the SOCs as long as I've watched their corresponding anime. On that note I would have to be a serious burn-my-heart-out loyal fan of an anime in order for me to collect any toy items from it. There are anime shows that I love, and some that I like; but it doesn't always mean that I'll go after their toys.

In Mazinger Z, Dr. Hell's creations are based off the original mechanical giants that were used hundreds of years before by the inhabitants of that island. He just modernized and modified the designs to make them more effective and lethal against modern weapons (except Mazinger Z of course ). I didn't watch Great Mazinger yeat, but I know the premise. The enemy robots, in this case, are sent by the Great General of Darkness, they belong to the Mikene Empire and were manufactured by demonic beings, not by man. The mecha design reflects their otherworldly nature. I don't know man, I think I might find the show interesting, I shall give it a try (as soon as I'm finished with exams. Also, I'll have to finish watching Daltanious first).

I'm still convinced that the only reason you'd be bored is because you're trying to marathon them like a moron. [moderator filter on]
Seriously, did you watch them as a kid like that? No, you had to wait a whole week for the next episode! Or maybe just one day if it was in the afternoon - which is the more reasonable suggestion. What I'm saying is, don't just try watching the whole show in one sitting, of course it's going to be boring and repetitive. Just watch one episode a day! Feel like that's too slow? Watch more than one show at once!
I've been doing that for three years now and I'm still going.
