It's not the SOC sculpt. It is a new sculpt by Playmates. It is based on the classic design, which would obviously look similar because the SOC is based on the same thing. The colored weapons are cool. Having the SOC I don't see much point in it for myself, but will get it for my son. I'm not sure on that. I would normally give a company the benefit of the doubt, especially when using the same source materials. But there are some details there that have only ever been seen before on the SOC. And some of the proportions would appear a bit close for comfort. Yeah these are prototypes, but I can't escape the sneaking suspicion that for at least some components somebody just 3d scanned a SOC and printed it in plastic. Things like the proportions on the red markings on the black lion and the obvious ab crunch make me wonder, just a bit. imo comparing other official toys that are based on the classic design like Trendmasters/Toynami/Mattel to the Playmates prototypes we see here are heavily derived from the SOC. Playmates looks more identical to the SOC than the others I've listed. Like, I don't really mind Playmates doing the classic robot but it makes me wonder about what goes on behind the scenes that they're releasing a toy that looks almost identical to Bandai's.

This is such a strange out of the blue announcement from Playmates. Looking at the black lion, it sure does look a lot like the SOC. It has the extended abdomen section, but it is molded in place. There are lines on the paws that were there because part of the claws were diecast, this one is all plastic, yet the mold lines are still there. Blue and yellow also are screaming at me they are the SOC sculpts, especially the lion heads. The red and green lion's elbow sculpts for combined mode looks identical to the SOC as well. What the hell is going on here? I'm getting some popcorn, I want to see what's going to happen here. I wonder if Bandai and Playmates have some sort of deal? Sublicense the SOC sculpts for US targeted plastic figures? Much like some of the Transformers back in the day? Playmates is a Hong Kong/LA based Chinese toy and doll maker. I met Sidney To a few years back and did some light (/sigh unpaid, well except for what amounted to all the Star Trek Figures and SHips I could fit in my Suitcase) consulting work for his crew, Sidney was a good friend with my Boss and his family. Really nice guy. Really nice people. If there is some deal with Bandai I would think that it would be brokered by WEP. There just wouldn't be much casual crossover there, Unless Playmates has been doing subcontract factory work for Bandai or Bandai America on their more straight up plastic retail toy lines, such as some of the Bandai America product lines. Keep in mind that these are test samples that they took pictures of. The sculpts may simply be quick scans of the SOC as a placeholder while they work out design and engineering.

That's the other big tell to me. I get the impression that these are meant to be the same scale or size as the Legendary Voltron. But for that size one would expect them to use the Toynami as more of the reference, since that is already scaled the way you want it.

Bandai may not be on board with the Playmates "Classic" design. I just checked out the BBTS and these are the images that now appear:If there is a dispute over this between WEP and Bandai, be glad you've got your GX-71. This could effect future runs/reissues.

Maybe BBTS released the images too early without an okay from Playmates? Maybe the folks that pre-ordered it based on the photos can contact them about that for an explanation?

These playmates toys are just that--"toys". they are made for kids and my kids love them. They are really fun, well made for the price and a great way to introduce this stuff to a new generation. Who knows what this "classic" will look like. I'm just glad it's being done!

I'll definitely get this for my kid. He's got the 15" Combiner and the Metal Defender. These are really excellent toys. Especially if you compare them to the quality of Transformers and Megazords available in retail stores. This set is $5 more than the 15" Combiner, so I'm hoping it's on that scale. Chachie Power put out a short clip stating that it has sound effects. The Legendary Defender effects are pretty amazing. They announce when the individual lions are combining by color and some other cool stuff. My Son just loves getting Voltrons that he can unbox and play with. I think I'll pre-order it tonight.

Nah! These were pretty clearly engineering or pre production samples. Not meant for public distribution. They probably did dummy up a demo using some modified scans of the SOC 3D printed to the scale they needed, just for a proof of concept. Even if Bandai b*tched about it the worst that will happen is they pull the pictures with an "oops". So long as the final production version is clearly distinct from the SOC it's basically "no blood, no foul". It's not really THAT big of a deal.

I wanted to get another SoC for lion mode but just too expensive, I'd rather spend that money on DX Combattler. I guess this will do for the lion mode - cosmetic wise quite similar to the SoC design

This is priced about the same as the combining Legendary Defender - which is 16" tall.
