I've been an avid SOC collector since 2000. I have all of them (color GX's and PX's). However, lately I find myself losing intereset in my SOC collection. Maybe becasue I have collected them all (I am still waiting for my GX30 + 31 from my local supplier) and the excitement of the "hunt" has died down. Or it could simply be the fact that the robots that are being released do not interest me at all (the lighter dude and the Spiderman-related ones just look really silly to me). But perhaps what it boils down to is that I am outgrowing them. I guess all "obsessions" come to an end at one point or another. In many ways, getting two of the glass case Aikea shelves helped me come to this conclusion. I have maxed-out the real estate of the shelves. I don't want to crowd the case and I plan not to get anymore.
Maybe all of this will change after I get my Voltes V (I am Filipino after all and I will certainly get Daimos once it gets released). Ending my SOC habit does have some positive points... I can put more money in my retirement plan or invest $ instead...
Do any of you guys feel the same about your collection?

Maybe that's why Bandai held off on releasing V5 until now, LOL To me this hobby will never die, there are way too many to collect for that. I do understand that you are concentrating your collection to the SOC's alone and for the next few releases it will be very uninteresting unless you were a fan of shows of the upcoming releases. I watched Gunbuster as a teenager and enjoyed it, hence that will get bought. Leopardon and Gold Lightan is not doing a thing to me, yet...Good luck on your break from the hobby, but as the nature of this hobby YOU WILL BE BACK! lol
Mekander SOC and Daimos SOC and oh yeah Raideen SOC...when (or if) they come out, you'll be back wallet and credit card in hand.

I'm like that with my transformers...ten years collecting and now I'm selling them off. I've only just started on my SOC collection but I only have GARADA and Tetsujin and then I'm stopping unless they release getter raider as a full size SOC and not the titchy one that came with the set.

I think its all about finding new interests. While I lose a bit interest in SOC like diecast stuff, I moved over to SIC. When good SIC releases slowed down, then I moved over to Medicom 12". When I get most of the 12" that I wanted, then I move on to the SRW diecast & Dengeki figures. While I got most of the current SRW stuff that I like the most, some good SIC & SOC released recently. Now I am back again. If you look around, you'll always find cool stuff to collect & cool shows to watch.

mazfan I've the same sentiment for my DVD collections. Also started in 2000-2006. After that many years, my excitement & enthusiasm are no longer there...all the spark & chase are gone... Finally introduced by my friend in May upon the release of Voltus V, I find myself re-energized in a totally different field..this time it's the SOC. But then again I will take it slow & only collect those robots that I'm familiar... How old are u mate? I'm in my mid 30's na with a wife & kid. Nowdays so much expenses to cope up hehe Yeah probably the most I can sustain is another year or so. What you said is true...ending the SOC habit does has its positive points... so we can put more money for investment for our retirement plans

The thing for me is... I was collecting these robots because I wanted them from my childhood and never really had them when i was young.
Other robots that I did not know or were not part of childhood...I did not buy or collect... That is why My SOC LIST is not complete.
I collected for sentimental reasons. I am sure that by the time Daimos SOc comes out and teh other Voltes V recolors come out..I think I will stop collecting. Unless Bandai comes out with an SOC Danguard Ace, SOC Mekanda and Even an SOC Balatack... other than that I don't have any robots that I want to have....
SO I guess it depends on your reason why you are collecting.
The thrill of teh HUNT collecting..doesn't happen to me... I just want what I want in my hands... SO far I have that right now....my ULTIMATE or most coveted Robot..It is the Voltes V SOC...
The other SOCs in my colletcion they are just bonuses...

Hey guys, those of us (me included) that has several other "fall back" toy lines, guys I think we may have AAD&D. Mazfan I don't think you have it, I wish I can stay focus like you can. In fact, if the toy stuff is in a lull, I have at least 4 other outlets to get into: Video camera, Computers, Photography, Videogames, models, RC's, etc. I think I may be a good candidate for that AAD&D!

That's the reason I never went completist with ANY of my collections. It becomes routine, while waiting on just one or two toys that you REALLY like gets the adrenaline and anticipation up several notches. Having to look at toys that I'm actually familiar with or a fan of the series where it came from, really makes me proud of my collection, however mediocre it may compare to some of the folks here. Go minimalist. Just get the toys that you are a fan of, or stuff that you grew up with. Makes it easier to collect most of the time, and doesn't kill the thrill.

I really like my collection and I'd never part with it. But I mainly agree with mazfun and others, when they say that the enthusiasm went down in the last period.
For me this is due to the fact that the models I really love (the mazinger ones, the grendizer and the getters) have already been released. The only other model I'd kill for is kotetsu jeeg, so I hope that somebody puts a decent diecast version for this on the market.
I'm now buying the daigokin (normal color) models, and I'm really happy with them, exactly as I used to be with the first SOCs I got.
I also love the Fewture models, so I think I'll quit buying SOCs (till a decent one is released again) and I'll go with other brands (aoshima, max factory and marmit).

Sounds like we all reach that point sooner or later... ...for me it's not VoltesV - it was Grendizer. As a kid growing up in Quebec, I was exposed to all the Go Nagai bots and in particular the French Grendizer dub "Goldorak." So my SoC collection concentrates on the Mazinger line of bots and I pretty much stopped collecting except until the Grarada and Doublas came out (and then stopped again after that).

Good Topic! As soon as I got my GX-31, my desire reached it's peak to collecting SOC's. I passed on GX-30 and even said that I'll pick him up later. But a funny thing happened in between. I said to myself, "do you really want it?" and my answer was "not really". So, I didn't. My wife asked me last week, "what do you want for Father's Day", she obviously knew already what my answer was. Instead of getting GX-30, I got another GX-03 just so I can line them up with my GX-31 (not combined). It basically boiled down to, which did I want more. I must say, I was a completist (to a certain extent), but like what OMNI said, be a "minimalist" and that is me now. I would still get the upcoming Mazinger Babes re-issues though and obviously anything related to Votes V, Daimos, Danguard, Mekanda, Balatak & Reydeen. This is what I can remember growing up.

I only buy things I really like. I only have Mazinger Z (GX-01R) and Garada K7... why? Because I loved the Mazinger cartoon as a kid. I won't get Voltes V, as cool as it is I never watched the cartoon when I was a kid, so there's no nostalgy there. The fact that I liked Mazinger doesn't mean I'll get every robot from the series, I don't think I'll get Boss Borot, for example. I only get the ones I really like, my collection doesn't need to be "complete". I think that if you only get the ones you really like, you don't get bored so easily, because all the robots you get give you "that excitement"... Just my two cents.

Now, that Ihave Voltes SOC I would be slowing down on my purchases- in fact I am just waiting for the re-issue of Aphrodai A...and of course I am still going to be waiting for Black, Gold etc. colour of Voltes SOC. It has been a wonderful three years of posting and reading in this FABULOUS forum. There are several posters here that I've considered as part of "the family." To all of us collectors may we continue to share and expres our love for ...ROBOTS!! Not a completist here as well. I just buy robots that has significance to me. Besides collecting robots I have other collections or hobbies like Superman and Batman action figures, eURYTHMICs and Annie Lennox stuff, etc.

I'm feeling quite the opposite where the SOC line is concerned, I've never cared much for the classic super robots (Except the Getter set, re-issue that damnit!) so I never brought an SOC untill Eva 01 came out and then I only brought one. But now with their move into later mechas I'm finding my interest to be much higher. brought Xabungle, eagerly awaiting another chance to get Dan the man Couga and I am wetting myself in anticipation of Ideon and most of all Gunbuster!

Whats ADD&D? Pardon my ignorance. I guess to me is a bit different. I did start out collecting toys (Macross & classic super robots) for nostalgic reasons. But as I collect, I found more and more toylines have really great sculpts, toy engineering, and awesome bot designs. While its been fun on the part treating them as play things, they also became very good on going sources for art inspiration in my professional art/illustration in videogame career. Not to mention sometimes through new toys, I get introduced to good shows that I've never paid attention to. So by now, this toy collecting hobby pretty much wrapped around a lot of things that I do, both on a personal & professional level. Funny how it turned out this way, but its pretty cool nonetheless, and don't see I need to put an end to it. Just need to tighten up my appetite when the budget gets tight, or slow down at moments when I feel less excited about toys.
