I think I can think of at least two reasons why I chose to watch Shin Mazinger first, and both might be equally true.
1) Since I had no previous knowledge of the Mazinger mythos, I would be able to enjoy the Imagawa mish-mash objectively without comparing it to everything else that had been done before it, or 2) It was the shorter than the 70's series.

Tetsuryu, can you pre-order from Discotek if you live outside USA? I think they only sell/ship within USA, I am in Canada and I think I am out luck if they release Mazinger Z.

I vaguely remember the attack, Denjiha Kougeki (pictured below), being used by Mazinger Z in the TV series but I'm sure it didn't look like how it was depicted in the SMZ manga. Can anyone describe the original version of the attack or have a screen-cap of it from the TV series?

I honestly cannot remember such an attack being used in the original TV series. Perhaps it was used briefly and under a different name, or I didn't notice it, I dunno. During the time I was translating the Spanish subs I had to play back the video so that I could synchronize the subtitle time with the characters' lips... ...but as I was doing that I became distracted towards watching the episodes instead of getting my work done. So, I continued synchronizing while ignoring the episodes. Meanwhile, I never noticed anything peculiar outside the standard Mazinger-Z weapons attacks and how often each weapon attack was used. Every night after work I'd shut myself inside my room and sub an episode... ...the work took me five months, and to this day I'm still proof-reading for typos. That project has me stigmatized, if I had to do it all over again I'd probably throw a sh*t fit. Wanna know something else? Until I worked on the series subs, I had always thought that the Mycene Empire were only Great Mazinger's villains. I came to realize that the Mycenes were originally Mazinger-Z's villains later on in the series after DrHell enlisted the help of Arch-duke Gorgon. I have no doubt Mazinger-Z was upgraded with much more superior weapons later on when he returned during the later half of the Great Mazinger series. But, to be honest with you, the Great Mazinger series ends in such a weak punk-assed way it disappointed me. We're all quite familiar with Mazinger-Z's usual weapons and attacks. But he's also known to use unusual weapons I've never become familiar with, because he uses them either in an OVA or a Manga or some SRW game. I'm learning new schtuff about Maz every day! lol zozo-mag I vaguely remember the attack, Denjiha Kougeki (pictured below), being used by Mazinger Z in the TV series but I'm sure it didn't look like how it was depicted in the SMZ manga. I just checked Mazinger Z's Japanese wiki. Apparently, it was used in episode 77.

Can anyone describe the original version of the attack or have a screen-cap of it from the TV series? I guess it looks a lot cooler in the manga than in the anime. This is the Electromagnetic wave attack (電磁波 攻撃). I'm not sure it was a real attack/weapon thou. Koji was instructed to fire electromagnetic waves into a tunnel flooded with water to drive a Mechanical Beast out from under the Photon Lab. Aphrodite A, and its replacement, Diana A could also fire off electromagnetic waves in the anime, but would run out of power when doing so. }D

Thanks for the screen-cap, TheMazingerZ.
The manga version looks more like a "MAP attack". In one of the manga's alternate realities, Mazinger Z was fighting the combined military of the United Nations so it used weapons that could target numerous enemies. I'm guessing the Denjiha Kougeki used there was basically a very powerful omnidirectional electromagnetic pulse.

and to think Shin Mazinger Zero is a canon thing to all incarnations of Mazinger Z, i was surprise they brought the electromagnetic wave thing even though it was one use. Is like Great Mazinger's Breast Burn Absolute Zero attack or the Thunder Mazinger Blade, both use only once as well Mazinger Z's finger missiles. I find those kind of weapons annoying, you see them in action once and the next thing you know there gone.

I agree with you... those One-time Use weapons are a pain in the ass. Like that "Boomerang Fist" against Deviler-X1; and that silver right-hand Mega-Rocket punch against Jeiser-J7... those were used only once in the series and that was it. The pain in the ass about it is that now we're stuck with having to buy separate Accessory Packs for the sake of having those single-use weapons with every new Mazinger-Z toy we collect. Oooooh, the horror, the horror! lol zozo-mag and to think Shin Mazinger Zero is a canon thing to all incarnations of Mazinger Z, i was surprise they brought the electromagnetic wave thing even though it was one use. I'm liking the SMZ version of the chogokin Z where it has mass-shifting properties similar to Getter alloy. This ability makes Great Mazinger's Great Boomerang, Knee Impulse Kick, Back Spin Kick, Atomic Punch and Drill Pressure Punch look more intimidating. It also allows its Breast Burn to upgrade into Breast Burn Up when the Great Boomerang on its chest enlarges.
