I modified a mask I found on thingverse. Shaped it to fit my head, and added some flair and ports to hold glow sticks. I need to dremel it some and then an acetone bath. I used sculptris to reform it, then I used lightwave to do the rest of the work.

Acetone vapor bath refines the piece by smoothing the surface and helping to erode the rough surfaces from printing, and also strengthens it.

Like he said. I only printed this at .3 instead of .1 since I was not even sure it would come out right. I am going to smooth it a little but mostly wanting the strength so it holds up at the festival. It seems my connectors are too small so I am going to dremel and maybe add some more.

LOL..... that's cute, Coldiron! ( the Mario and Greenie man having a Chili bowl cereal. lol) Hey, if you whip up some more kitchen tables and food things, and some sticks and brooms, you could stage a diorama with Koji and Sayaka figurines in a kitchen having a bloody cat fight! Merrrrreeeeeeow! zozo-mag

I suggest getting an organic vapor mask. You need to heat the acetone and then have the part above it in something that can accept the vapors. I am using a steamer just for that. It will heat the acetone and then the mesh top will have my part that will interact with the vapors. Check out the vids and you can see it described better.

It's all done by heating and you don't want to overheat. You use wires and wear gloves and goggles and preferably do it outside. The vaporized acetone is literally what you work with in a large glass cylinder and you need to work quickly other wise your piece will be eaten away. I have had people do it for me, I have yet to do it myself. My brother and I actually just imported a machine that will do it for us. It was pretty expensive. It should be here in less than a month. We will see how well it works, some of our friends got one also.

I learned some lessons with the acetone. I ended up making my mask bubble up by leaving it too long. I didn't worry about it since the paint I was using is textured anyway, but it is noted for future builds. Here is the mask so far. The ports on it will hold glow sticks. I am making it for tomorrowworld next week. Hope to have it done today.

My friend is brining my some EL wire to try. I am afraid it might limit my movement, so if it does not work I will just use the glow sticks. I have some big plans for making other masks. I used this mask as a huge learning tool on making stuff for 3d printing, and when I get back I will blog about that some and begin development of my other stuff, like my toys and future cosplay. I might try and build a cnc foam cutter for doing the larger bits of cosplay and use the printer for detail work, especially for the face.

You have to have enough room to rotate it - once you see an area getting smooth or glossy it's done and you need to turn it to the next area - unless the effect is uniform, then you want to remove the piece from the vapor completely. Also - was your plate/vapor too hot? You want it warm/hot but stabilized.

Ahhhh... the days (nights) of youth... I've gotten a little better with really basic 3D modeling. Here's the latest print on my Davinci... Custom SRC Mazinger Z Stand! I'll paint it later on, and refine it a little more. But so far, it looks and works great! }D

Very cool, but I wish he had done it more with a normal Mazinger sculpt instead.
