Ok, I just signed up on Rinkya so I could get bids in on YJ. I have a ton of questions, a bit confused, and clueless. First question, I guess, would be, Does it work like ebay? If I place a bid, is it the maximum bid? Or does it jump to that bid? Do they use paypal for payment or the credit card I registered? I have about a hundred more...

You will get the hang of it. I haven't registered with a middleman service yet because Y!J will put a huge dent in my wallet lol.
I am pretty sure with bidding you give them your maximum and just roll with it. I know you can bid more than once but i dont think you can email them or bid like five minutes before the ending of an item, there may not be time to catch it.
Some of the more experienced guys will chime in, I'm sure.

It's been a while since I last use Rinkya. Their system is real time but it also manages internal user bids. So if the current high bid is 5000 yen on YJ, and two users submit bids of 10,000 and 15000 yen, then only the higher bid is submitted to yahoo and raises the high bid to say 5500 yen. It's designed to avoid Rinkya users bidding against one another. I think their fee is a little more than Celga at the low end but their fee is capped at $40 so it would be cheaper for expensive items (better double check that).
I started using both but only Celga for the last 10 years or so. Mr Ginrai is right, either way it's gonna put a huge dent in your wallet.

I cant speak to Rinkya specifically (I use Celga), but there are some key differences with YHJ Auctions vs ebay. First, and most important is there is no last minute sniping. It works like a real live auction where if there is a bid in the last 5 minutes, an additional 5 minutes is added to the auction end time to give the other bidders a chance to up their bids. So basically the deepest wallet on the given day will win the auction. There are occassions where the auction is set up for no time extention, where there potentially could be sniping, but these are very rare, especially with vintage toys. As far as bidding and your maximum, if you are sending an email to Rinkya for them to bid for you, there is nothing to worry about - just send your max bid and they will bid it for you. It works like ebay where it will only bid just over the next bidder. Between 10000 and 50000 yen the increments are 500 yen. Above 50000 yen the increments are 1000 yen. I cant recall the lower amounts (250 yen increments upto 10000 yen) but you get the gist of it. Make sure you know what you are buying before bidding - I don't think any proxies allow bid retractions, so translate the descriptions to make sure there's no defects/repro's etc. to avoid any bad surprises. If you are unclear on anything in the auction, you can have them ask the seller a question or request more pics (though sometimes these are ignored, in which case it's basically taking a chance). Anyway, good luck and hold onto your wallet!

Didn't realize Rinkya had real time bidding. In that case one other point - you can only bid up to 100x the current bid (I guess to try and avoid bidders accidentally bidding a rediculously high amount by mistake). So if an auction starts at 1 yen, the max you could bid to start is 100 yen until someone else bumps it.

I'm prepared to dent the wallet on this item, been waiting for over a year to get a shot at one. I just have to figure out how. Still working on that part.

Wow, it's really confusing! The seller has feed back ratings but no clue how to read them, the return policy states there is NO returns, can't find a contact link to even email them a max bid. Sigh, so much to learn, really busy day, and the auction ends tomorrow morning.

Yeah, don't use it if you're scared about getting a scratched item or are super picky about auctions. You can ask rinkya to ask the seller questions, but they don't have to respond to rinkya.
You can translate the text but that's about all you can do. Personally, I haven't had any condition issues with anything I've gotten from yahoo japan, other than one figure... the box smelled like smoke. Also, it's not Rinkya's problem if it is damaged.
Keep in mind what you're paying for. If you see an item that's cheap there, doesn't mean it's going to be cheap for you. A lot of people sign up and think.. "wow, look at all these prices!!" but they don't realize how the fees work.
You generally have to factor in at least $85 bucks in fees for any one item, so unless it's a steal it's not going to be cheaper.
On the upside, They do have discounts for higher priced items, great shipping/packing, and good customer service.
Only use it for something you absolutely cannot find in the states, on ebay, or on a retail site.

Thanks Gakken. Price or condition isn't the issue. It's actually getting the bid in. I think I got it though, I found an email address for Rinkya and they got back to me. Working out the details and getting my questions answered now.

As far as bidding you can't snipe like you can here, generally. If two people are bidding on something it extends an auction out until the last person is standing.
It's an interesting system and has it's merits, but if you're on a time crunch and trying to get to work on time it can really suck. haha

I've stepped up a bit to the semi-rare items that I just can't seem to find. I figured this would give me a new avenue. I've never been one for sniping anyhow, I'm not afraid to spend if I want it so I throw what I'm willing to spend out there on my max big and if I don't get it, I move on to something else. I lost a jumbo 17 that way but another will come along eventually.

Actually Rinkya has an option to place a last minute bid, but as most auctions have an auto extension it's kind of pointless.

The auto-bid is a nice feature I think. Why bid early and just up the anty early on. If you are away or sleeping, having your bid go in at the last 5 minutes could help as may be able to avoid a bidding war against someone if they are not watching the auction at the end. While I love bidding wars when I am a seller on ebay, I pretty much only bid at the very end. Well, that has cost me an auction or two when I was busy and forgot about an ending one.
When I first joined Rinkya, it was somewhat a pain to put bids in. But, last year, with their updates, so easy to place your bids when you want.

Hhhmmm...... Didn't see Auto bid. Your right that would be a nice feature. I'll have to look harder for that one.

Oh, that would explain why I didn't see it. I didn't watch anything, I just saved the link. Thank you!!
