Just wondering how much will it cost you to make this? I've been told that the 3D printers are quite expensive to run, true?

I won't know how much it will cost until everything is printed, assembled and painted. Yes, printers are expensive to run since the filament is expensive and when it breaks down the parts are expensive too and also hard to find especially in my country. To be honest it's hard to sell printed items since I only have one printer and it takes a lot of time to print things. Anyway I'm ahead of schedule as the lower part is done, I might be able to complete the legs this week. The arms will get printed last since I have to make sure that the model is sturdy since it's the only articulated part and it's kinda heavy.

Mattel, or Popy, should HIRE you! Do you plan to add decals to it, or will you paint that detail into the armor? zozo-mag

I will probably use katakana for the orbots logo. Most of the parts do need painting as the filament im using is of another color. There's a sticker shop near here that makes vynil stickers for motorbikes so that's where I will have the stickers made.

^ ^ ^ That's gonna be something to look forward to. With so many image editing and font programs available I'm sure you can pull it off. zozo-mag

The logo is the least of my worries. Having it prepped and painted after printing all the parts is gonna be a pain and you know how much I hate to paint! One part of the thighs is done but both will be finished later. Hoping to get the legs done this week.

Don't think of the painting task as a "pain"... after all, you're putting so much love into that figure the paint job aspect will be worth it! Whether a toy is made by a manufacturing company, or by an individual fan at home, something will have to get painted! zozo-mag

I just have little patience for the paint to go dry before applying another layer or color and the sanding is quite a messy job sometimes. Printed the thunder thighs and I'm now starting on one of the lower legs

I had to separate the lower legs into different pieces so I can print it piece by piece or else it will take about 25 hours to get it printed and that makes me nervous since electricity here can suddenly go out without any warning. I also hollowed it out so I can insert weights inside to help balance the figure. I started printing one part and it will get done by the time I wake up tomorrow.

I'd hate to imagine how I would react if I were printing something and suddenly got hit with a power outage- I get frequent power-outages where I live, especially on very hot summer days. I'd probably smash things around my room, cos I'm short-tempered like that. lol Good luck, hope the legs get printed out successfully!

Thanks Tony, I got one part done and now starting on the other. I also don't want to overwork my printer that's why I want less print time. The printer being interrupted with a power loss has happened a couple of times but instead of printing a new one I decided to cut the model where it stopped printing and printed the unfinished part then glued it together. I dislike wastes especially if it costs me money.

Pretty cool so far!! How poseable will it be? Since this will be a machinder style figure the legs will have the poseability of a brick but the head is moveable along with the arms and elbows. I'm still designing the launching fists since the arms get printed last. I could make it more poseable but this defeats the purpose of a machinder style figure. Since the whole model is modular I can just design some joints and swap out some of the parts and I already have a design for it in mind. Right now I just prefer the simplicity of a jumbo machinder.
