I really like the cockpit head design on the CMs better...but I will give it Toynami on making the inner cockpit look cooler. Having a seat and controls looks better and it looks like you can even swing the seat up from teh bottom of the "mouth". Pretty cool.

Yes, but with the Toynami it doesn't look like the craft is trying to devour its pilot quite as much.
I love the little flip around hiding mechanism the CM's has, too. Very clever. one of my favorite parts about the Tread/Beta

Good review, although he's a little nicer to the toy than I would have been. I actually got to handle one of these last night at a friend's place and I can't say I'm really that impressed. Well, I'm impressed that Toynami made a masterpiece toy that isn't a complete mess, but that's what the standard for any company should be, so it's not really a plus for them. In terms of big mecha toy, it's just alright. The overall design is a lot more linear and uninspired than the CMs version, a lot less dynamic. It has sort of a 'made out of blocks' look to it.
Quality wise it felt OK, although somewhat unremarkable. It definitely doesn't have that really fine feel and finish that something like a Soul of Chogokin has. I would even go so far as to say it feels a bit 'cheaper' than the CMs, in terms of build and assembly. The CMs is a lot lighter, but anyone who's familiar with high end Japanese toys knows that weight doesn't mean anything these days in terms of quality construction considering we have lighter and stronger plastics now. The Toynami Beta doesn't seem to use the same high-grade POM plastic that CMs used, but it's certainly not made out of the nearly unidentifiable sub-par plastic (my guess is bone meal and earwig honey) that Toynami's Alpha was constructed from. There didn't seem to be any poor paint or glue smears on the one I handled, so that definitely helps.
It's not a bad offering at all, and should be good enough for those who are willing to buy it. The biggest problem I foresee will come from the diecast legs causing too much wear because of their weight. It's yet another example of Toynami using diecast just for the sake of using it, rather than putting much thought into the actual benefit of it. Diecast should help the build, balance and structural integrity of a toy, not hinder it. But I think Toynami trying to appeal more to the "wow, it's diecast!" crowd than to the more discerning toy collectors.
I'm glad Toynami could get this out to the people, I'm glad it didn't turn out to be a wreck like the Alpha, and I'm glad there are now two Tlead/Beta toys out there for people to choose from.

eriku,
You are correct my friend. Jenius was a lot nicer in his review than most would have been. But he does not, as far as I know, lean more to one side than the other. I always enjoy reading his reviews. It won't change my stand on Toynami though. They have put out too sh*tty of figures for too much money for too long.

Yep, that's what I like about his reviews is he's typically pretty unbiased. As for Toynami, my favorite thing they do right now is the line of Futurama figures, although in true Toynami style three of the first figures (and arguably the best figures of the line) were simply re-issues/re-makes of figures done in 2000 by MAC Toys.

i still think its better than the CM , and the reason they use diecast is to actually make it worth $150 there is no other reason , Myabe if cm would of use diecast and another form of plastic i wuold say CM did great but since they didnt to my own personal opinion is just worth $50 .
We still have to wait for some other reviewrs to see what they have to say about it , so far no real flaws on the toy

So....you DO like Toynami better? HA! Just playin....I can't get over how gun-ho you are over Toynamis. Some would venture to call you a Toynami-Fan-Boy. LMAO! I just like messin with ya Mayita. I just haven't seen someone in a LONG LONG time stick up for Toynami like you do. But the only thing you keep saying is how great it is that they use diecast. Diecast is NOT what makes a good toy. Design...durability...likeness to the lineart...etc. THAT is what MAKES a good toy. If you are basing Toynami winning over CMs on diecast alone...then there's something wrong.

You may prefer diecast but it has no more value than plastic. To say that Toynami used it on the Beta to 'make it worth $150' only proves that you're the kind of person they're marketing it to. As has been discussed already, diecast metal is typically a very low grade zinc composite metal. Some call it a crap metal. While heavier than plastic, it is actually not as strong as many plastics and certainly not more expensive to use as a material. If it was, Hot Wheels cars would be a lot more expensive than they are. Since it is such a weak material that's why it has to be used with some thought. Toynami added it to the Beta to provide weight so people would 'think' the toy 'feels' like it's 'worth' $150.
All that said, I enjoy diecast metal in many of the toys I have. It adds a nice heft when used properly. But diecast is simply not what defines a good toy.
