2009 is drawing to an end. I wasn't around this board during this time last year and am not sure if there is an official TOTY thread every year, but thought I'd get it started anyways. What is, in your opinion, the robot (mecha) toy of the year for 2009? This toy must be released from 1/1/2009 to 12/31/2009. I have taken nominations and made some minor adjustments to the overall TOTY nominees based on the voting for the individual groups. Vote now! Individual groups (for examples for each categories see post #2): 1. Transforming Robots with MSRP Greater than $150 USD. 2. Non-transforming Robots with MSRP Greater than $150 USD. 3. Transforming Robots with MSRP Less than $150 USD. 4. Non-transforming Robots with MSRP Less than $150 USD. 5. Bang for the buck robot with MSRP Less than $50 USD. 6. WORST Toy of The Year Two things you can do: 1. Vote for your favorite overall TOTY. 2. Vote for your favorite in each of the individual groups described above. I will keep track and provide updates of individual group TOTY. Link to spreadsheet (view only): spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AtyPb8vOaNJ3dGVPRG1qV3dxZ2xDR3NnLThGalhIZFE&hl=en

Yikes, all those groups!!! That looks very complicated! Why not just do it in a POLL style format, where the one with the most votes wins. Keep it as simple as possible... I don't like to have to think too much when I'm in toy sites - takes the fun out of being here!

LOL. I was hoping it'd be easier with groups. Too many toys out there!
Anyways, I will setup a poll, looks like we can have 8 toys up for voting, let's start throwing names out and I'll set it up once there are 8 nominees!

I for one support a small handful of groups (or categories).
But we must consider overlaps: if 5 SOC toys nominated for SOC category are under $150, but only 3 of those show up in the "best under $150", why even bother nominating the other 2 in the SOC category? It seems to me this would suggest a two-stage vote where the best 2 in each individual categories go onto the "best under $150/best over $150" where you would also lump all other toys that didn't have their own prelims.
If that is too complicated, then we should have categories that don't divide the same universe in multiple way.

I agree that there was a bit of overlap. I have adjusted the group criteria so it doesn't have overlap.
Did Aoshima come out with any gokin in 2009? I can't recall.....
Okay, so far 8 nominees include voltes v GX-31V, Danguard Ace normal version, and I'd like to put in Yamato Patlabor.

i am not a TF fan anymore but that Optimus Prime Jumbo needs to be in there somewhere. that is one impressive peice that deserves some sort of TOTY honor.

To many toys for my feeble mind, LOL. I don't have enough biscuits in my brain to think and sort through all those categories, let alone I don't even have an 8th of the toys listed.
But, not to kill the joy here, I'll just nominate my GX-01R, since it's the Only SOC I have and it's the only SOC I'm most familiar with.. And, although I acquired it a couple years ago, it's my favorite TOTY to this day. ;D

toty has to be toys that came out this year. from1-1-09 to 12-2009. i like to keep thinks simple and nominate only one TOY for toty. my pick would be Yamato 1/60 vf 1j v2. my mind may change if it does i will update this post. just wondering was the 1/60vf 1j released this year? ?

uh so what toys did come out this year? i know thats a dumb question to ask but i haven't kept track of toys for the year.
Of Revoltechs ARX-7 Arbalest - I dont own it but it looks cool
lets see what else - i bought this year. i think the GX-45 Mazinger Z is my favorite SOC sure the 45a is a great figure but i like the 45.
Although the GX-51 Getter Robo and Tetsujin GX-24n are great figures too . I skipped over a lot of SOC though.
However my holy grail toys were the 1/60 VE-1 and VT-1 from Yamato of those 2 the VE-1 Elintseeker is the winner.

Thanks guys for the input.
Thanks Wilson for the clarification. Yes TOTY should be released from 1/1/2009 to 12/31/2009. Please see above post #2 for some examples of the toys that were released this year (at least to my knowledge, please correct me if I am wrong). Please let me know if you'd like to add certain items to the list.
I am also collecting nominees for the ONE toy that will be voted via a poll as TOTY. Once I have 8 I will start the poll. So guys if you want your favorite 2009 gokin to be voted for please nominate now. So far below are the nominees:
1. GX-31V Voltes Respect in Box 2. Yamato Patlabor Ingram No.1 3. Yamato Danguard Ace (Normal Version) 4. Yamato 1/60 VE-1 (wow, I can't believe Yamato is taking 3 of 4 spots here)
I'm going to have to not include the Optimus Prime jumbo just because it is a whole different animal on its own.
So two things you can do: 1. Make nomination for THE TOTY, regardless of category, and/ or vote once the poll starts. 2. Vote for your favorite in each of the indiviual groups described in post #1.
UPDATE: I have updated Post #1. Please read.

My Votes
1. Transforming Robots with MSRP Greater than $150 USD. 1/10 Scale Masterpiece Cyclone
3. Transforming Robots with MSRP Less than $150 USD. Masterpiece Grimlock Super Sentai Shinkenger TF Movie Leader Class Prime Reissue Dino Megazord
4. Non-transforming Robots with MSRP less than $150 USD. SDCC V.I.N.C.E.N.T Vinyl
You should probably scale one down to the sub- $50 level as well. Hard to compare Masterpiece Grimlock to the Reissue Dino Megazord. Both very cool, but WAY on a different price scale.
There should be a "razzie" category as well, for the WORST robot. For that I have to vote for ROTF Devastator.

1. Yamato Patlabor Ingram for OVERALL TOTY 2. Yamato Patlabor Ingram for non-transforming toy over $150 3. Big-O for non transformer under $150
I haven't handled or read up on enough stuff in the other categories to feel like I'm qualified to nominate anything there.
I really want to nominate CM's Metallic Gyakuten Oh for two categories but it's not from this year....

I bought very few 2009 released toys this year...
But I believe that the Gundam Fix Figuration Metal Composite Zeta Plus should be included as a candidate for the transforming toy over $ 150.

What's the stance on figures that wouldn't technically be robots but fall into the realm of robot-style collectibles, such as the Beagle/Toynami transforming Mospeada Bikes? Frankly I'd rank these as some of the best toys to come out this year without a doubt, but they really aren't technically robots, although they're quite mechanical... That said: Transforming, more than $150: 1/10 Beagle/Toynami Mospeada Ride Armor (Alternate: Bandai GX-46 SOC Aussenseiter and Dygenguar) Non-Transforming, more than $150: Urgh, drawing a blank here. It's a pain to try and remember what came out THIS year. Transforming, less than $150: ROTF Leader Class Optimus Prime Non-transforming, less than $150: High Dream 6" Grendizer

There should be a "razzie" category as well, for the WORST robot. That would be fun!

Ok... my vote for TOTY goes to:
(drum roll......................Crash!)
SHIN MAZINGER-Z Jumbo
It was released this year in coincidence with its counterpart anime series "S M S! Z-Hen". It's the most modern-day jumbo ever manufactured, since the classic Jumbos of the '70s. It's fully articulated from head to toe. Its paintjob is to Die for. And, it's damn Expensive with a capital "$" ;D
