LOL. Maybe true for you, but I would bet most would be satisfied with just the SOC. When I first saw the Toynami Mastepiece Voltron 10 years ago for $150, or the plastic version later on for $50, I was so close to getting them but didn't bite. I did get into the Matty Voltrons, both of them, because of the novelty. Now that I have the SOC, unless a DX SOC Voltron is made, I don't really see myself getting another one.

not really sometimes even if you get the most perfect version of a character you still want more lol i think i will still buy the Toynami version and the Blazing Sword version even if i already have the SOC Oh man, that's for damn sure. I remember getting MP10 Optimus Prime years ago and thinking "This is it, this is the perfect Optimus Prime toy." I still think it's the best one but I've bought dozens of Optimus toys since then, and forsee myself buying dozens more. Some characters I only need or want one definitive version of, but others I am such a fan of that I enjoy buying many versions of. SOC Voltron is devine, but I am still excited to buy the upcoming Playmates version, and probably other versions beyond that.

erikuI need a good diecast classic design of Optimus that transforms. What do you suggest? Depends on size and how much diecast you would like. On the tiny end (4 inches I think) the THS Convoy is pretty great overall. Based on classic design, designed by Shoji Kawamori of Macross fame, has a bot mode that many believe is on par with larger figures, comes with opening trailer with Roller and other features. The truck mode is considered by most to be the weakest point due to being rather ugly. I don't mind it personally since it holds together and rolls well, but I certainly understand the criticism. Moving up to about 9-10 inches tall, MP-10 is based on the classic design and is pretty close to perfect but only features a small amount of diecast. Chest and feet I think? He also comes with an opening trailer, Roller, etc. Standing at about 12" tall is MP-01. Based on classic design, loaded with fun little features, looks great in both modes and is so heavy with diecast you could use it as a weapon. While he doesn't look as 'perfect' as MP-10, I still think it's the best Optimus Prime toy in terms of being robust, fun and having a noticable presence on the shelf. I've had more non-fan people point out and admire MP-01 than I ever have MP-10. I know there are a few unlicensed transformable Optimus toys based on the classic design now, or coming soon, but I don't know if they have any diecast content.

MP10 is very good if you want to collect other masterpiece transformers as the later MPs are scaled based on him. I do believe however that MP10s design is quite outdated specially with the recent release of the MP 2.0 Megaton - that thing is amazing! I use to collect Tfs before but since my first SOC - Voltron - I got addicted to SOCs and also MEtal builds which eventually needed to sell my TFs for SOCs and Metal builds. I'll probably hop on back if they announce official MP Combiners I'm a sucker for combiners Anyway, still no official news or pics for this version? I wanted one to display in Lion mode

I totally forgot about that one, and the voyager sized MPP-10V - and I have both of those! Haha. You made a good choice, MPP-10 is very nice, even higher quality than the original he's based on. Enjoy!

Well, we've been hoping/praying for Die Cast for over a year and a half. We didn't get that Soul Of Chogokin level collector piece we all dreamt of. But, we did get an awesome toy. Here are some pictures of my son's, and my thoughts on the Metal Defender.
First, the Lions:
The Lions are nicely articulated and easy to pose. Their chests and backs are die-cast. They feel solid. Any paint imperfections picked up by my 4k camera are barely noticeable on the small cats. (The Yellow and Blue Lions measure 4" from head to butt). Unfortunately, the horns do not fold into the Black Lion's head.
Here's the main attraction... VOLTRON: Legendary Defender!
The Lions merge into a nicely sized 8" combiner. It's about the height of Blazing Sword Voltron, so they display well together on my son's shelf. Everything fits tightly... nothing wobbles or falls off. It's well constructed and seems unbreakable. With the Blue and Yellow Lion's front legs properly positioned, he stands firmly. He's armed with a sword and shield. Weapons for the individual lions would have been nice.
My biggest gripes are that his head doesn't turn and the wings don't fold out. But, the wings on my childhood Matchbox Voltron, and one of my vintage GoLions have broken. As this is a toy, I feel Playmates made these apparent oversights for durability. Aside from that, he's well articulated and can hit some cool poses....
His knees are double jointed, and his balance is excellent.
He can even hold a HIGH-KICK! Look out Infinity Gokin!
As toys go, this is a 10 out of 10. It's higher quality than any non-collectible Transformers/Power Rangers robots you'll find at Toys R Us or Target. It's well made and built to last.
Is it overpriced? A Blazing Sword Voltron will set you back $90 on eBay. This is a die-cast combiner, and it's at least as cool. So the cost doesn't bother me.
The big question is: If I didn't have a kid who was into Voltron, would I buy this?
I have to admit, I would.
In my collection, I've got multiple representations of Lion, Gladiator and Vehicle Force Voltrons. Heck, there's even a Dinosaur Force from "Voltron the Third Dimension" on my son's dresser. A die-cast version of Legendary Defender is surely as crucial a piece as that. You may not want every incarnation of Voltron. But for me, the focus of the current hit show is essential.
If you're waiting for a work like the SOC, keep waiting. But, if you're a collector who loves this super robot, and can enjoy something on the level of Blazing Sword Voltron, I say, "Go for it!". After all, when was the last time you were able to go out to run errands, and return with a metal robot that's at the zenith of pop culture?

Great review and pics! I'm glad I am not the only one who appreciates this toy. Taken in context (die cast transforming robot toy for kids at Target/Walmart) it is pretty great. I hope Playmates also does a smaller die cast version of the classic Voltron there are releasing soon.

I have mine since release unopened. I really like them but I think combined mode is a bit on the small side. I don't know if I should wait a better release (my rule is one figure per character, no more). However seeing your review make's me wanna play with it. I can't make up my mind yet but I'm very close to keep it now.

That looks MUCH BETTER THAN ANTICIPATED! I'm surprised at the level of articulation. This is going to have real presence at 16". I've POed from the BBTS. Heard it's expected to release in Jan now, but I'm not positive.

My biggest gripe with the Playmates Voltrons (both Netflix and Classic) is that there are no shoulder joints on Voltron. Red and Green just plug into fixed slots. To rotate the arms you have to move the Black lion's default shoulders. This might not be so obvious with the Netflix but with the Classic it breaks the red chest plate design. I wish Playmates did something about it for the classic version.
