1. How did you discover Super Robots?
It was probably a combination of 4 things for me. Mattel's Shogun warriors hit just at that right age. I had a few of them plus the comics. I loved the die cast ones. I had a friend from England who's parents got him a lot of cool imported die cast stuff which was amazing. And somewhere in this mix Micronauts hit toy shelves along with Battle of the Planets hitting TV. Which all kind of merged into a lifelong love of Giant Robots. All of this spawned from an already discovered love of Godzilla and Giant Monster movies. If anybody remembers the 4:30 movie in the New York Broadcast area you'll understand. I think my first Japanese Robot show was Astro Boy which at one point ran adjacent to Captain Kangeroo in the mornings. Astro Boy creeped me the f out
2. List your favorite Super Robots in order.
oof! My favorites change daily. I think my first love was Reideen as that was my first toy. Followed closely by Getter Dragon. But beyond that my mind wandered between Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger and Combatler V. For some reason I never liked Grendizer back then. The saucer seemed pointless at the time. The same with Gaiking.
3. Did any Super Robot air on any of your local UHF stations?
Like I said above Astro Boy and Speed Racer, while not robot Super Robot shows came over very early and aired in the morning cartoon block alongside Captain Kangeroo. This was when I was very young. I think the only even vaguely robot related anime that hit regular broadcast near me was Battle of the Planets. Sadly my area never got Force 5 that I was aware of.
4. Now that you're an adult, which Super Robots figures do you collect?
I have an almost complete SRC collection. I love the little poseable guys. I have better than half the SOC's probably at least 2/3's. My favorites to collect in larger form are any of the combiners.
5. What is your Super Robot grail that you own or wish you owned?
So Many. There are a few Godaiken or original Popy's I would love. My only other grail just because its such a unique piece and was here and gone so fast as Yamato crumbled is the Yamato Shield Liger. Oh and a full set of SentiNel's 1/12 scale Mospeada Cyclones.
6. What are your top Super Robot figures you wish various companies would produce?
I've been begging for Bandai to go deeper into the Super Sentai classics in their SOC line forever. Although I am easy to please. I look back at my top wish list when I started my modern collecting a few years ago. Most of all of our wish lists, and almost everything we have wanted has been delivered in droves. Voltron? Vehicle Voltron? SOC Megazord? What few Bandai hasn't done Sentinel and others have. I think the only thing missing from my collection is a good non magnetic version of Albegas. Just to finish up the "Voltron's" on my shelf.
Yeah 70's kids might remember this
