Tempting to push my brand new station with this game, but a second-hand Xbox will make the job...

besides the ones already mentioned, for SNES (Metal Warriors, Cybernator, and Ninja Warriors),Virtual-on, and the Capcom series (Tech Romancer, Cyberbots, Armored Warriors) Dreamcast had a gem called Bangai-O. Intense 2D action!

Awesome game. I used to have that and I'm selling my copy (US Sega Genesis). It is a hard game and definitely takes some getting used to.

Mhm I Ctrl+F'd my way through all the pages of this thread, and it seems it hasn't been mentioned yet. Terra Nova, a first-person mech-piloting game, released in 1996 for DOS. Here's the Wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_Nova:_Strike_Force_CentauriI saw some gameplay of this a while back, it won't look outstanding by today's standards (obviously) but it looked fun, it was made by a great game-making company and... well, it's got robots Just my 2 cents.

Had not seen that one. Suddenly remembered an old DOS game called Mad Cat where you were in a maze with mecha warrior Mad Cats. Had a online pvp mode. It was awful even by standards then.

Discovered a PC console from the late 80s called X68000
Lots of mecha games. One looks like it was done by the cybernator team and another looks like the art style of the ghost in the shell artist.

So I got lost on Youtube again and stumbled upon this new video on Metal Jesus' channel about an old PS1 game that mixes (street) fighting and robot model kit building with a Skylander/Amiibo type gimmick. As you can see in the video, the game itself looks mediocre at best, but I thought the concept was interesting. A for effort, D for execution.
The game is called ZXE-D: Legend of Plasmalite. It was released in 1996 by - you guessed it - Bandai for the original Playstation.
It comes packed in a big box containing a few model kits and an adapter that goes into the memory card sockets of the console, allowing the robot torsos to be connected and recognized by the game. The robots have interchangeable limbs that are reflected by their in-game representation. However, it seems the game only knows which robot each limb belongs to and not exactly which limb is in each socket. In other words : if you plug Robot 1's leg into Robot 2's left arm socket, the game will translate that configuration as "Robot 2 with Robot 1's left arm", even though it's a leg that's plugged in there. So it doesn't matter WHAT is actually plugged into a socket, only WHO it belongs to; in game, arms sockets will always have arms and legs sockets will always have legs. So if you wanted to send that ball of legs you built to low-polygon war, you're screwed. I suppose that extra level of parts identification was something Bandai thought was too expensive to implement and just not worth it. But I digress.
WARNING : the video footage below is not for the faint of heart, as it features a dog and people NOT petting it. You have been warned.
