actually from the pictures i see of it near the Robot Damashii figure it may be no bigger then a gundam Fix or 1/144 HGUC, if i recall correctly i used to have some of the old bandai M7 1/100 model kits and they were tiny as hell, it is cool though i would love to see a Macross II VF-2SS Valk myself (preferably bigger of course) but even at this size would be cool.

Wow - looking good! I sure hope my pre-order at amiami will get filled (I only placed my order a few weeks ago). I guess I'm only just a bit disappointed to see how much "anime-magic" is involved in the VF-19Kai. I had always hoped that Yamato was just taking a bit of artistic license when they did the early 1/72 scale VF-19/VF-19A... you know, with the funny arms-over-wings GERWALK mode making for a really wobbly design... but well. Looks like the only other option was to use plug-in parts (particularly that huge head antennae... oh well.

Well, it's the weekend and I finally got around to picking this up from the post office. My initial reactions:
Good thing we saw those unboxing photos online otherwise I probably would have been severely disappointed in the size. I'm so used to the 1/60 scale as a minimum...
You know, the surface finish isn't as bad as the online photos look. The plastic is a sort of metallic so it's kind of like a metallic paint-finish. Yeah yeah, not the real thing, but still less plasticy-looking than plain red plastic. So I'm kind of happy with that.
Man, it really straddles the line with "parts-former." Even without the little extra panels to beef up the legs proportions, the head alone needs 4 removeable pieces to complete transformation. First is a little panel that hides the neck joint - it comes off while you put in the main head fin and then you snap it back into place. And from GERWALK to battloid, you remove that panel completely then must add on the pair of smaller antennae on the side of the head. And of course, the hands pop on after you remove the panels at the wrist area.
Lastly, it's a damn good thing some of those parts are plastic after all. I had the upper arms accidentally backwards and bent the shoulders the wrong way, popping the arms right off their ball joints. Thankfully, it all behaves quite like a Gunpla ball-joint and snapped right back into place. In this way, I'm kind of glad the die-cast is hidden where it needs to be rather than all over and making it top-heavy or unbalanced.
Overall I have real mixed feelings about this toy. I'm so happy to finally have a transforming Fire Valkyrie (my first was the plamo back in the 90s that was non-transforming). But on the other hand, it's tough to love such a mishmash of plasticy parts-exchanging design.

I hope nobody finds this pic too big. This scan was what really sold me. Fire Valkyrie is one of the most outlandish mecha in all Macross history. So if you're gonna go, go in style! ;D I do have one question: most of those Japanese reviews we've been linking to mention "Soul Stage 3" - seems that's the stand Bandai expects us to use the included support for (fighter mode only). Where do you suppose I can get one of those bases? It's so stupid that Bandai included only part of a stand and the part missing is just the flat panel of plastic with a hole in it. Cheap!

I see, so it's an entire stand system. Interesting... Thanks for the clarification!

How do you rate it, Quinjester? Solid and fun? Extravagantly wonderful? Somewhat fidly?

I can take some pics of the mouth'd face thisevening.
Overall I'd rate it as pretty good - more expensive than I'd like, but very well designed as a whole. It feels very solidly built, much more so than the larger Yamato YF-19, and while it makes concessions due to its size (no landing gear, some parts swapping), it still manages to be quite a well built and thought out little package.
All that said, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who didn't already love the design of the 19 or wasn't a fan of Macross 7 in some shape or form - and in all cases it's worth looking around to try and find one on sale if at all possible.

Quin, if you do not install the proper swappable parts, would it really ruin the looks of the figure?

I'd say only if you're really paying attention. Don't forget, the swappable parts for the legs is only on the backs of the thighs and knees. Check out my blog entry here for a full-body photo: benohki.blogspot.com/2010/01/vf-19-hi-metal-series.html(scroll down to the second last photo). (in fact, now that I look carefully as Quinjester's pics, I realize the leg parts are not installed either). Now... as for avoiding ALL swaps? You can't. Because then your battloid head would be ....weird. He'd kind of look like Robocop without the face shield because that black "forehead" is part of the antennae swap-in part. Also the "ear" antennae are also swap-in bits. And finally, you'd have no hands.

Quin, if you do not install the proper swappable parts, would it really ruin the looks of the figure? I actually haven't got the optional leg enhancement pieces installed in any of my pictures, so I'd say no. Like Ben mentions, there's a point where you really do have to swap stuff out like the hands (I don't bother with the wrist covers in fighter mode, though) and the head crest and lasers. You can probably get away with leaving the side head lasers off, if you don't mind the sides of his head having wierd holes in them, I suppose.
