I would have to respectfully disagree with that, but to each their own . I think this new Voltron looks pretty awful and am quite content to not buy it, heh.

I don't think the 24" Voltron is ideal, but the issues people are posting about odd proportions.. I just don't see it. Looking at the pic and comparing it with the Toynami pic, the proportions seem very similar. But it's all in the eye of the beholder I guess.

Chachipower, agree with you bro, the toy designer seems to be more of a corporate guy instead of someone who knows voltron inside and out. Xiombarg, I respect everyone's opinion, and it all really depends on how much we are willing to part to get this one. This voltron's main selling point is and always will be it's size. That and the pilot figures perhaps. If this was a jumbo machinder I don't think you'll hear any "rants" about the figure. But its not, we wait for years and years for a decent collector voltron figure, instead we get an oversized happy meal toy. I have the masterpiece voltron, and while it's a nice figure, I always never really loved it. It was always there just because it's decent enough to be called voltron. To be honest I hated its proportions too, and felt it skinny as compared with my taiwan KO lionbot toy. The lack of gimmicks also doesnt help. I have a lot of respect for mattel as a toy manufacturer, while I can't say the same about their greedy marketing tactics, I always felt they can do better, and this voltron, well, for me it's not better. Sizewise yes, but design and presentation of the robot, it just isn't. I still have my faith that bandai can execute a well proportioned, and intricate voltron that can even hide the lions legs. (or at least can be removable ala dalty) So until then, I'm saving my money for it. Mattel had the chance to get em but not today it seems. ;D Wishful thinking that GX-65 is Golion! I'll save up for that! TMZ, yep I hate to agree with you but yes that voltron does indeed look better. ;D

Of course the action figure sculpt would look better... I mean this particular figure doesn't even go as far as to detail in the folded legs of the individual lions, and there's no engineering to it at all. It looks fine, but I'm not sure if comparing it to any of the actual gattai robots really means anything?

I still think if Bandai put it's engineering expertise in a Voltron/Golion it would probably blow away any version made no matter the size, let's just keep our fingers crossed that it happens sooner or later.

Well sure, but to be fair with what looks better you have to compare apples to apples. That was my point. But then it depends what you're looking for too. Comparing the Mattel action figure to the gattai figures could make perfect sense for some of us.

to me a good voltron is what i want, dont really care if it breaks into five parts because i dont care for the lions, only voltron, so if making it a combiner is going to ruin how the figure looks, then i prefer it doesnt combine and is given better a scuplt and articulation instead. hopefully when bandai makes it, it will be in the src line and the soc line too.

That's exactly how I've felt about Genesic Gaogaigar and many other bots. Voltron happens to be one robot where I do like the individual lion units, maybe because it was fairly unique in the early days of super robots in having animal shaped ships. I lusted over the black lion as a kid and I just can't shake it, so for me it doesn't feel complete unless it combines. But I do know what you are saying..

i like the action figure version. I always go form over function. I dont care about indvidual parts unless those parts look cool. If that is the case then i would be tempted to buy a set for the indvidual parts and then a dynamic figure of the completed robot. Even though I like the lions really they lost their appeal to me over the years though I do like the new voltrons lions (just not really voltron himself).
I know engineering takes away a lot from the design but I really think they could of done a better job...... look at some SOCs and SHE products..... they do an awesome job (especially SHE) of maintaining both form with function! Of course She products cost an arm and a leg but the quality definitely shows.

If I had a choice between
>a toy whose parts combine to form the robot
or
>an Action-figure of the robot itself
I'd go for the action-figure; in this case a Voltron action-figure. I've always enjoyed Voltron as a robot character. While the lions are cool, and they each are vital to forming the Voltron robot, it's the robot character that intrigues me most. After all, the anime was about the adventures of Voltron (Golion) otherwise it would've been titled "Meowkaiser: Five Kittens Form Giant Cougar" ;D
... and if I were to get an action-figure of Voltron, I'd definitely go for a specimen that comes physically close to the Toei Animation rendition (Golion). This new Voltron specimen really looks nice, nice anime colors, but it isn't "Toei" to me. And, I'd really feel funny trying to ignore that tiny torso with its chasmous gaps in contrast to the proportions of its body... ...compared to the Masterpiece Voltron toy with its full torso, this one is just a couple of hip bones. And, look at that waistline... so..... slim....... ....He looks like he's been wearing a corset! ;D
I have the Trendmasters Voltron and as much as I like it I really never even paid attention to it, not even play with it as five separate lions. I feel weird about the way it looks already.
I was almost bought by the Masterpiece Voltron. I also thought that 'vintage' Matchbox Voltron figure was really hot. Then I went nuts for the new jumbo Voltron which debuted earlier this year, and I think it's a damn good rendition so far.
But, I've yet to encounter a really good mesmorizing Voltron toy that will capture the Toei Animation style spot-on.

A combiner that doesn't combine just doesn't do it for me. Where is the fun in that? The whole purpose and the reason some of us like combining super robots is because we get to relive the show by combining the figure. Sure a soundbox is cool and all but what I remember most about Voltron as a kid, was that great looking gift box. Five lion separated, kept inside a styrofoam tray. Say what you will about the MPC Voltron, but it is probably the best 120$ I've ever spent. Great diecast content. Great looking collectible display box with great looking artwork. That SOC GodSigma might have a lot of bulk but is made of mostly plastic, cost nearly double that of MPC Voltron and probably weights a lot less than the MPC Voltron.
But going back to the Mattel almost two feet tall Voltron, I still don't like the big gaps on his hips.

i see your point super but im not going to repeatedly form voltron or any other combiner more than once or twice so there is no point to it (for me)...... i realized that 4 years ago so no more combiners for me unless it looks super awesome and is super articulated which we all know you lose a lot of that in combiners (usually). so I rather have the form im going to keep it in and it should look as awesome as possible in that form which this voltron certainly doesnt. sooooooooooooooooooo 30 voltron here i come

Who has the smaller Mattel Voltron? Is it me or did Mattel purposely make it impossible to take out Voltron without ruining such a cool box? I couldnt for the life of me take him out without ruining the box. I did my best but COME ON seriously, its a collectible, make it so you can take the figure about and put him back if you want. You would think that having a sound kit on the box would make the box worth saving. I think what they really want you to do is want to buy more than one. One so you can open and one to keep in the box to show off the sound gimmick and cool box. Thumbs down to Mattel for that steaming turdbox.
Which brings me to the 23" Voltron. I am about to give up hope on seeing a Voltron toy that we can honestly say, yeah this is THE representation of that robot. Bandai would definitely be the one to pull this off and I know they are brewing something, theyve said so, but it better be something good. Hoping for a SOC but MAYBE I'll settle for an SRC. Oh an Mattel better not pull this self destructing box shenanigans on the 23" Voltron.!

I was able to get it out of the box without damaging it, but it did take a while to do so. I did cut off the plastic ties, as they were the biggest pain to undo.
