Without searching tons of previous posts, Has there been any discoveries of a type and method for painting Jumbos. I have had an idea for a custom that I am ready to bring to life. Any info would be appreciated.

this would be tough to do. for display, the monsterkolor will work, but if you play with it and handle it often, it will show. you have to make the surface of polyethylene reactive first. i dont know of a chemical agent that you can rub onto it and have that effect. im sure something exists, but not an over the counter application. i painted one of my gaikings and it worked pretty well, but eventually after more tinkering around on it, the finish suffered. i had to spray about 5 layers of extremely fine coats of primer on it. just enough to grab but not make a thick primer shell.

Painting jumbos can be a tough challenge, especially to make the paint grab onto the surface Permanently and not wear away. I've tried spray-painting a Great Mazinger jumbo's head with Krylon..... too tacky, DOESN'T WORK, Paint Rubs OFF. So, then I washed off all the paint with acetone and dried it off quickly to prevent the acetone from eating into the surface and cracking it.... Then, I sanded all of the original jumbo's paint from the head with fine-grit sand paper... ...then I used Rustoleum paint (small cans) and brushed on in thin layers, all the colors for the head. The paint gripped really well, especially the Metallic silver color for the crown and mouth. Here's my GrtMaz jumbo head... ...here's the Brain Condor (fish-mouth version). I cut the lip off and made a "nose" for it using hot glue as the body, and a piece of plastic from a gallon milk container as the "hull" outer surface. (LOL!)... ...that was back in 2008 (or 07?), and I lost the original pics which were of a larger size. ...unfortunately, I never finished working on the entire jumbo, and I shipped it with most of my collection to my mom's house in Puerto Rico a couple years ago when I thought I was ready to relocate there. Next time I take on a jumbo customization project I'd better finish the project so the specimen isn't just left incomplete. I'm often too busy with other projects and life routines that I don't get much time to finish any of my hobby-related customization projects for my collection. zozo-mag

hey, good job on the GM head. i had to do the same sanding treatment, but because its not PE, i made it tacky using acetone and applied high grade acrylic paint right onto it. works great. but PE would need some risky flame treatment to truly make a bond. i did cover a gaiking in circuit-board patterned wallpaper. that was actually pretty cool and it worked, but didnt see any reason to keep it that way for long. if you want a solid color, use high grade colored duct tape. youll be surprised how good it can look.

Fusion is actually something based in epoxy from what I understand.. was it regular Krylon or Krylon Fusion??

Good topic here. I have a purple jumbo StarScream coming my way and would like to paint it up in better Transformer colors at some point and give it a real face sculpt.

what primer is the best for vinyl? what do you use for acrylic and what do you use for for other paints?? I got a Mazinger Z jumbo model coming and it mentions putting a few coats of primer on it but I dont know the primer needed...and once I use that primer can I go with a spray paint like Krylon Fusion or do I now have to stay with acrylic brush-on paints? Painting is a real trick with this vinyl.. seems like alot can go wrong.

vinyl is easy to paint. use whatever you want. primer is not really necessary since you probably wont be putting a lot of wear and tear on it. for acrylics, i use off the shelf from michaels. just avoid the 50 cent 2 oz bottle stuff. the stuff in the 1.50 range will treat you good. if youre talking painting the whole mazinger z, then thats not vinyl anymore, and youre dealing with polyethylene. primer wont really stick to it. you can paint it, but itd basically be a shell holding itself around the shape of your jumbo, not a true bond.

ah, the thai kit! i have that one. awesome kit. lots of fun to paint. actually, the seller has instructions on which primer to use. the krylon is nice. i do a lot of these kits recently. spray your primer from a distance and get extra fine, almost nil coverage. do 3 coats like that and youre ready to go. i still use acrylics on them, but in all honesty, spraypaint is so sophisticated these days, krylon paint right out of the can is great. i have extra cans of matte and gloss in varying degrees to get the look i want. gettershadow - long time no see, btw! ive been doing a lot of these kits since we talked as im taking on a "diet" from jumbos right now. i spent thousands and didnt get the actual robots that were on my list. until theres a dangard ace, etc. that we will all most likely compete for, im sticking with other cool stuff that is affordable. these recast kits are killer stuff. i have a few that other folks may not know are out there. the kit you got is really a cool one. the only one ive seen in jumbo size that i dont want is the silly Taekwon V or whatever its called.

I already got two cans of that ready to go.. reason I ask is bc they say its more of an epoxy than an enamel. Everyone says its a killer kit..I think Ill pick up a few of them.. I got plans if you know what I mean. Taekwon V??.. where is it? Id get one.. I like Taekwon V.. hes wierd.

I'd love to read the article about the Great Mazinger makeover, but the text is too small to read. Can someone repost a direct URL with bigger text or email me a .pdf so I can read the entire article?
Many thanks, Jacob

hi, ive got the grendizer, but not the getter dragon. i recently got the FLOSR getter dragon and cant sop staring at it its so cool. that seller posts different ones every now and then. watch his store for a while, youll see some surprises. the taekwon v is one that he has, too. ask him about it or he may be recasting right now. hes great about combined shipping, too, so it makes sense to get 2 or 3 at a time. as for krylon fusion, i use it a lot, and almost everything i do gets primed. primer doesnt ever hurt. especially with these recasts, they sometimes have slight dents in them and you may have to bondo it if its an issue for you. if so, you need to prime it. i painted a guitar with fusion and no primer and it worked ok, but it rubbed off the neck, of course. primed it and repainted and its still there.

Thanks for the info oldrobot.. Ill ask him about the Taekwon V when the time comes. Only thing he has right now that comes close to that is a Combattler V and I thought you may have been talking about that one.. its 22in tall! I may get that one. But whatever I do Im gonna make a bulk order next time as long as I like what I see with this big Mazinger thats coming.. Based on what you say, Ill go head and prime him then once he comes in..I like to spray as much as possible on those big surfaces, you just cant get that even glossy look without some kind of spray finish. If I got gloss Fusion on it. can I hit it again with some clearcoat or will it cloud up on me?
