Since you seem to be a Raideen expert, what are his powers? Another poster gave you the Wikipedia entry, which should suffice on that question. Besides that, I saw the series with English subtitles when I was a kid on two stations in Northern California -- so I got to see several episodes twice. Also, I own several books and magazines on the series as well as the two DVD box sets from Japan. So, I think I am qualified. Any reason he looks like an egyptian god? Because he is from the lost continent of Mu -- which has been said to have had a culture that spread out to the world to ancient world, and remnants can be seen in the art of Ancient Egypt, Easter Island, Mayan, Native American, etc. (I posted the Wikipedia entry for Mu, already, IIRC.) Where does the pilot sit? Where the heart on a human being would be -- inside of the chest. Is there a cockpit or aircraft that enters the robot? Raideen is semi-sentient; it's not just a big machine -- it's actually alive! In one episode, Raideen lost an arm or a leg, and a new one began to grow back! Raideen beckons Akira Hibiki to join with him to enable his full power, since Akira is a direct descendent of the Mu people. Akira must chant a Buddhist-like sutra and then jumps into the air -- Raideen emits a light from his forehead which catches Akira and lets him "Fade In" to the arrowhead-like plate above his face, and Akira drifts down into the cockpit. Finally, when he transforms, he looks like some sort of eagle. Some background info would be great. That's the God Bird, Raideen transforms into this stage to deliver his coup de grace to his enemy combatant. The eyes send out a ray which locate the vital spot of the creature (originally, Fossil Beasts in the first part of the series), and then the Godbird smashes through and destroys this organ. The Godbird is symbolic of the Thunderbird from Native American folklore. Wikipedia entry for the Thunderbird. MechaShiva asked about the connection between RAHXEPHON and RAIDEEN. RAHXEPHONwas created and directed by Yutaka Izubuchi who not only interviewed Yoshiyuki Tomino for the Japanese BRAVE RAIDEEN DVD Box Sets, he also said that RahXephon is indeed his tribute/homage to RAIDEEN: [Yutaka Izubuchi] director of RahXephon has said this series is meant to be a sort of modern-day Raideen. As such there are similarities between Raideen and RahXephon, particularly in the titular "robots."
Akira Hibiki and Ayato Kamina both have mothers who are from a race called the "Mu". This in turn means that both Akira and Ayato have Mu blood.
Akira and Ayato both "meld" into a surface in order to enter the cockpit of their respective robot. Akira enters via Reideen's forehead; Ayato can enter the RahXephon both directly and through a portal that is separate from the body of the RahXephon.
The Raideen and the RahXephon both are portrayed as intelligent, sentient beings and possess similar general aesthetics, particularly the human-like face that is covered on the sides. Both can attack with their voices, and can form a bow with arrows as well as a sword that protrudes out of their right arms.RAHXEPHON Wikipedia EntryHope this answers your questions! ;D

Although I didn not know who he was, Raideen was the one who hooked me up with the world of super robots...
That day is still clear to me (1979), my dad took me to a local toy store, where a Raideen kit, the box showing picture of him firing the God Gogun was present. I wanted it, but my dad got me a Kyodain checkers set instead. My world was never the same afterwards....

When I used to watch the Kimba, Speed Racer, and Gigantor series in the early '70s, I was just barely in the 1rst grade elementary school... I had no concept of anime, I didn't even know there was such a thing as "Japan"... ...then, in '75, a friend turned me on to the Raideen tv series (it was broadcast in NYC, in its original Japanese language with english subs)... I then started learning about anime, and my hunger for it has grown insatiable; Raideen was the first robot to hip me to anime. My lifetime fanaticism for Super-Robot anime, to this day, continues to blow my mind; thanks to Raideen. zozo-Magengar

rahxephon toke the raideen egyptian and super robot elements and mixed them with evangelion. That's a good point. I think a lot of mecha designs were influenced by Eva after that show pretty much triggered yet another paradigm shift in what a robot is "supposed" to look like. I'm just glad that Bandai decided to go ahead with this project before the new Raideen overshadows it--possibly stealing some of the demand. I don't know what the odds of that were, but I'm just glad we'll never have to find out!

I strongly doubt that fake-ass-gold Cocoapuff bird will ever overshadow the Original Raideen... ...it appears to me that the new Reideen hasn't garnered much fanfare to convince the Japanese toy industry to persue a toyline with it-- not even a Kubrik! ;D The OG Raideen Rulz, Hands Down! zozo-Magengar rahxephon toke the raideen egyptian and super robot elements and mixed them with evangelion. Thanks for the links magengar. I've never seen the Raideen anime. I'm only familiar with the robot from the Marvel comics series and the jumbo Mattel Shogun Warrior who destroyed so many green army men.

I HATE the new Reideen for the same reasons I could not enjoy Raxephon. Naked femboys floating naked in the undescript un-designed sparkly backgrounds they are calling cockpits. Cockpits of utra detailed robots that are hardly animated, firing energy wepons from slow moving un-animated enemy robots.
Yawn.
OG Reideen moved around alot and fought creepy daemonic lovecraftian creatures.
The image of Reideen makes me feel happy. No jumbo is more stricking than his. It is indeed the esoteric design that is so compelling. I believe the Daie Pictures dai kaiju golem, Dai Maijin was also a heavy influence on Reideen.
I am more excited for this SOC than I have been for any of the rest. I can't wait for pics, especially how they handle the bow, and I am sure he will be able to pose super badass with it. Lets hope he comes with: An energy bolt for the bow a base that allows him to stand in non operation mode. and Akira on his moto!

Let's hope that base is the Pyramid from where Raideen emerges... now That would be Awesome!
I'm sooooo tempted to run outside, find me a hubcap or a snowsled disc, or a parabolic antenna Cable dish... and make meself a custom Godshield with the Breaker blade! I'd wreck so many cars with it! ;D

The original RAIDEEN (and Super Robot series) also have one critical element that the current crop of anime series and remakes are missing: ACTION. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing the new GIANT ROBO series, which is supposed to have action in spades.
