Old news, old news indeed. But I couldn't conceive that Robot-Japan didn't have its own threeA Metal Gear Rex thread. I could somehow understand the lack of interest in the World War Robot figures, being original and non-japanese designs, not striking the nostalgia and anime fandom cords like the majority of the figures we drool upon on these boards. But, this is the REX! Rex is coming and there's not a single puny word about it anywhere. SHAME ON YOU! ;D Yes, Metal Gear Rex is finally getting a proper figure treatement. That, in itself, is great news. That threeA is making it will either make you groan or giggle in excitement like a schoolgirl. On the plus side, judging by the pictures and threeA's past realisations, it's going to be absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, this beauty is going to come at a price. Like most of threeA's products, it won't be cheap. This is no Wal-Mart bargain bin McFarlane stuff, no. Also, Church of Chogokin cultists won't be pleased, as this Rex will most likely be all-plastic. But ThreeA's paintjobs being second to none, the lack of diecast won't stop it from being a major presence on anyone's display shelves. Until Konami gets its head out of the sand and gives us their own diecast Metal Gear, this is going to be the best Rex you can get. And then, maybe even after Konami makes one... Founded in 2008, ThreeA is the joint effort of Ashley Wood and ThreeZero Toys' Kim Fung Wong, mainly devoted to bringing the former's distinct artworks into our 3D world. Ashley Wood and Konami had already collaborated a few times in the past, Wood being responsible for the artwork of the Metal Gear Solid comic books and their "Digital Novel" adaptations for the PSP, among others. If I'm not mistaken, Metal Gear Rex will be threeA's first realization not based on an original design of Wood's. (Pics shamelessly lifted from threeA's forums.)

Since you can open the cockpit, it would be nice of them to include a little Liquid Snake figure to sit in it. One of Solid Snake would be nice too. So, if they decide to do Mecha-Zilla... err... I mean Metal Gear Ray, next, they could pack a small Liquid Ocelot with it, so we could stage that scene :
(That would be a spoiler for Metal Gear Solid 4, so if you haven't played it yet you've been warned... though with everything I've just said and the big title on the video below, it might be a bit too late for spoiler warnings... erm... sorry about that, eh! ;D Anyway, if you haven't played MGS4 yet, do it already.)

I was genuinely surprised when that scene popped up - it was great! BTW, I'm glad you found that vid because it confirms a funny feeling I had - the 3A sculpt of the REX legs does look a little bit weird. Now I'm trying to recall if we ever saw footage of Rex "sitting." Because I realize now that those extra "back legs" are actually part of the thighs when Rex is in motion.

That's the way Rex is suppose to look. In "down" or stationary form, the heels fold out of the back of the legs. It can convert to walking form where it raises to a more vertical position and folds the heels in.

Don't know yet, but 3A's stuff isn't cheap. I'd guess in the $300 range.

The $300 guess is floating around on some other sites too. Ouch, but worth it. Time to start saving.

Well, that looks like an iPod Nano (one of the older ones, because the current one has a flat edge on the top instead of a curve) in that last photo. If it is, then those Nano were only a couple of inches tall... that means this thing is pretty small... maybe 6 inches tall?

Er, no, no it isn't... that's an iPhone, not a Nano, which is considerably larger . And the figure is confirmed by the people who saw it at the 3A show to be somewhere in the vicinity of 17" tall.

Yup, that's an iPhone 3G or 3Gs. For the sake of reference, the phone is 4.5 inches by 2.4 inches. I'd say ~17 inches sounds about right based on that.
The rusty paint app looks really nice, but I'm having trouble making sense of it in the series timeline. I suppose MGS4 after being abandoned on Shadow Moses for years makes sense, but by that time the rail gun had been removed. Hm. Am I missing something here, or am I just trying to rationalize what was an aesthetic decision?

17" ? Wow, I had not read that. $300 wouldn't be that expensive that case. Being almost as wide as it is tall, that would be one huge Rex.

wow - thanks for clarifying (and let this be a lesson to others: this is why you use a pack of cigarettes to show scale when you photograph something.)
